Mark Millar on Fantastic Four and X-Men sharing the same cinematic universe

08.19.2013

Fantastic Four/X-Men

Many have wondered if Fox will be doing something with their comic book properties (Fantastic Four, X-Men) similar to what Marvel and Disney have done with their characters and films. There aren't any new details on THE FANTASTIC FOUR reboot being directed by Josh Trank but while talking about the upcoming film in an interview with SFX, Mark Millar says it will only be a matter of time before the two superhero teams meet in a future film:

Without question I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other’s movies. I think the most exciting thing in superhero movies, until The Avengers came along, was when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man. Even though it was a guy with an eye patch it was really cool – and I expect we will see more of that.

His comments are a little different from the ones he made last month that seemed to squash some of those crossover rumors. He sounds a little bit more open now then he did before, and while it might be a long time before we actually get a Fantastic Four/X-Men team-up on the big screen, it does sound like it could be a possibility. It might be a little difficult though with an X-Force movie in the works as well, however if Millar and Fox can figure out a way to bring these two teams together in the same movie, I think they will.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is in theaters May 23rd, 2014, while THE FANTASTIC FOUR is scheduled to be released on March 6th, 2015.

that is crazy!!!!!

a few days ago, on an older article, i had JUST written about that!!! thats nuts.... i think its inevitable since FOX owns both properties, and itd be cool for the X-Men and the rest of the mutant world to have allies that are other than mutants... i mean, the Marvel film universe has so much to choose from and play around with.... and plus, with the Fantastic Four and Reed Richards being "science-oriented", they could benefit the mutants and could equally help each other exponentially... even

Keep them separate. The FF is sci-fi while the X-Men were more a social commentary. However a Skrull invasion story would be the ideal reason to bring them together and totally badass. My dream crossover movie would be Wolvie/Punisher.

Say WHAT

Best possible crossover possible = Justice League vs Avengers. Avengers would include Spiderman and at some point the X-Men show up as a 3rd party trying to stop the war between the 2 teams

I would prefer X-Men to stay in their own mutant world...at Fox, if needs be...and FF to come back to Disney. Whilst I understand the importance of the Magneto kids showing up in the next Avengers movie...I'd rather them not be in it. Why don't they just stick to their own kind ;o)

In all honesty, with Tom Rothman gone I have more faith in Fox and their comic book movies than I have in DC/WB.

Age of Apocalypse, Infinity Gauntlet or Secret Wars come to mind, but too ambitious unless done in CG or cartoon movie.

X-MEN / FANTASTIC FOUR: DAYS OF FUTURE PRESENT. In the future, Rachel, the daughter of Scott and Jean and Franklin, the son of Reed and Sue, are getting married. A time traveling villain snatches Rachel and brings her to the present. Franklin goes back in time to the present to stop the villain and retrieve his fiancee. Chaos ensues because the Fantastic Four and the X-Men don't know who Franklin and Rachel are at first.

Alternatively, they can plan a Fantastic Four movie such that it is set in the same period in the 70s as DOFP. Say Reed's trip to the moon is designated as Apollo 18. (In real life the program ended in 1972 with Apollo 17.) Thus, Franklin and Rachel are getting married in the present and they travel back in time to the 80s. That would be much better.

I'll probably get thumbs down on this

But I'm not clamoring for crazy crossover team-ups in movies. With comics, there's so much volume and back story that those things work easily. You also have character repeatedly dying and coming back to life, changing moral alignment and falling in and out of love. With movies, I want to see a story that supports and legitimizes whatever characters are there, and actually feel invested in the characters. A movie that just showcases different characters and feels like it can rest on the laurels

I kind of agree. I've seen too many comics where it feels like every other page is just the artist showing off their character design skills as yet another hero is introduced into the plot. And that's the whole story. "Hey I'm here!" "Now I'm here!" "And I'm here too!" etc! The End.

I'm not sure I'd take anything Millar has to say too seriously, the guy seems to have a penchant for big talk.

Missed oportunity

They could have done it with DOFP, had they adapted it from the comics instead of the cartoon, considering Rachel Grey-Summer was engaged with Franklin Richard in the 'future', in the REAL Version !

Duh

Miller said this earlier this year too. But until Days of Future Past or FF come out, we won't really know for sure. I'm hoping we at least get a mentioning of someone in DOFP, but I'm not holding my breath.
