Meryl Streep to reunite with Mamma Mia director for Margaret Thatcher biopic

Few things set off Oscar alarms like A) biopics of historical figures and B) Meryl Streep. Combine those two things together and you’re almost sure to catch at least a handful of nominations.

Such is the case with this latest bit of new which has Meryl Streep in talks with MAMMA MIA! Director Phyllida Lloyd to play Margaret Thatcher in THATCHER, a biopic of the long-serving British leader.

The film is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War. The 2 1/2-month war was a turning point for the prime minister, who, after the victory, saw her approval ratings double and went on to win a second term. Sounds…riveting?

Seeing as Lloyd only has MAMMA MIA! under her belt, I would imagine this would be quite the task, but you could probably put Meryl Streep in a movie directed by an orangutan with ADD and she would turn out a worthy performance. Though in this film I will be curious to hear how she manages a convincing British accent.

Extra Tidbit: I donít care how much money it made, MAMMA MIA! was awful. Yeah, letís cast an entire cast who can barely sing!

Give. Streep. Her third Oscar. Already.

And seriously, I doubt that Streep's gonna have a problem belting out another accent - she's already nailed pretty much every other accent imaginable. A British one is probably going to be a piece of cake.

I'm sure she can pull this off and this project has Oscar stamped all over it. I just want to see Streep in her Thatcher make up.

Accent..

She actually doesn't need to do a convincing British accent because Margaret Thatcher had a unique accent all of her own!

Of course Streep can do a 'convincing British accent'; she can do anything!
And true, "Mamma Mia!" wasn't good. However, there were multiple people in the cast who could sing. Streep's not an amazing singer, but she's got some training, and has a nice voice. Amanda Seyfried is a trained Opera singer with an increddible range. Julie Walters and Christine Baranski also have singing and stage backgrounds.
