Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes will reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

05.27.2010

The color-coded half-shell heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael are getting yet another chance at life, this time courtesy of Paramount and demolitionist Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company. Radical? Or bogus?

While they're best known for unnecessary remakes of horror classics, this time Platinum Dunes is going for more kid-friendly material with a reboot of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. The guys behind the updates of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13th will bring us the latest live-action version of the valiant amphibians made famous by comic books, videogames, action figures, cartoon series, CG-animation and a trilogy of past films.

The producers are currently seeking a writer to tell the story of ooze-irradiated household pets and their crimefighting martial arts. We can probably expect to see Splinter, Shredder, the Foot Clan and April O'Neil as well. Though I could go for some Krang.

Last year, the property was set up with Legendary Pictures, who planned to use the "face replacement process" from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE to give the TMNT a new level of expressive features.

Extra Tidbit: Who would you like to see as the new Casey Jones?

I'll give anything TMNT a chance I agree with making it at least a heavy PG13. Don't know about anyone else, but I've always wanted to see leo draw some blood. They need an origanal story though, not an origins story again! As long as it gets done right I'm excited!

Really dig the look of the characters in that pic above. Not real big on Bay or his ambitions, as are most viewers with half a head on their shoulders. No secret that he and his company have a reverse Midas touch. Kinda don't like how they abandoned the CG series already though. It wasn't anything spectacular or even all that good to be honest but it had potential as a possible series. Eventual sequels could have upped the ante and it seemed like the right format to tell the story. Whatever,

Fuck the idea of an R-rated turtle movie. That idea would be terrible. I would love a hyper stylized version of the turtles with a late 80's early 90's feel. Gritty was done with the first movie. I just want something fun and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Blech

There is no better Casey Jones than Elias Koteas. And to hell with the whole reboot idea. The first three movies were awesome, and this one doesn't need it!

How about a more adult version for those of us that actually helped get TMNT where it is today?

Maybe I'm just being ignorant, but are today's kids even into this shit? I'll bet half the audience that watched the last one were in their 20's or older, so why not make a PG-13/R version? That shit would RAKE. IT. IN. I didn't see the last one, because I'm almost 30 and I like movies made for human beings over the age of 13.

Not that I really care though. I saw the words "Michael" and "Bay," and then immediatley thought of another word: Pass.

I agree, I grew up with the turtles but the best was the original comics. It wasn't kids material. Every TMNT fan should know they didn't start out as a cartoon.

So you don't watch Pixar movies either I bet?

Knowing very little of the comics, I would maintain that the movies were always aimed at a family audience, the 2007 CGI film included. Plus, it was pretty good and looked stunning.

So stop the hating.

I liked the CG TMNT that came out a few years ago and loved 2 of the 3 live action movies so I'm not sure about Platinum Dunes doing a remake. AZnd is there anyone at Platinum Dunes that has an original creative idea or do they just get paid by "borrowing" someone elses work?

enough with the reboots and retellings of origin stories. how many billions of dollars will studios continue spending retelling the same stories before they realize it's a bad idea? the first TMNT movie spent all of 5 minutes on the origin story and the rest on foot clan awesomeness. How many times do people want to sit through 2 hours of how Peter Parker got bit by a spider and Superman is from Krypton? I get it. Just tell an interesting story already.

Agree with the R rating - there should be blood, guts & heads getting kicked off it they're gonna do it.

Casey: Paul Wesley. [link]
They would never get a big name but this guy has good acting chops & can do brooding. Or his co-star Ian Sommerhalder who is the same.

Skip the turtles altogether and let's see an "Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters" movie instead. Clint, Chuck, Bruce and Jackie need screen time.

TNMT is something very near and dear to my heart as I grew up on the old cartoon and while I'm not a big comic guy I actually really love the TMNT comics too. I thought they nailed it on the first TMNT movie, but it went downhill after that. The second one was okay if they just hadn't put that whole Vanilla Ice scene in it. The third was subpar. I don't mind them doing another one, but to me the key to its success is combining both the cartoon and the comics; just mix elements of both (i.e. at

As far as Casey Jones goes, Elias Koteas was perfect, so I honestly can't think of anyone who could do that great of a job. Just PLEASE for the love of God don't cast Shia Labeouf.

I think Timothy Olyphant or Ryan Renolds would be good as Casey, depending where they take the character. Tim has that quiet brooding thing going for him and the look and Ryan is that funny smart ass thing going for him.

I'm looking forward to this. I don't happen to be a negative Nancy that thinks every remake or sequel is bad or raping my child hood. Love Friday and Nightmare, they did a terrific job on both of them. And contrary to popular belief, the old Halloween, Nightmares, Friday etc are classics because they're old, not because of their quality.

Saying that the first Halloween/Nightmare on Elm Street are classics because they're "just old" is just fucking awful.

Whether you enjoy them or not they're classic because they're genuinely effective.

whenever the turtles are depicted as "edgy" the tails of their bandanas are always layed over their chests (as above); I'm still trying to figure out how it implies this.

I love when people say

Bring it back to the roots of the ultra gritty comic book! Because that's how most of us remember the turtles, right? I agree with MoviezAreMyLife: something from everywhere is good, but the notion of a franchise that has so much dominated it's root image, going back to that root exlusively for it's newest big screen iteration - not happening.

Also, why do they insist on pressing on with the Turtles? It was cool that they were back, sort of, for TMNT, but they belong to the early 90's.

While I don't like that Platinum Dunes is behind this....

I think you could do like "Hellboy" and have makeup and a man-in-suit but CGI for the stuntwork. I hope they'll keep the "Cowabunga" surfer lingo and the different colored bandanas but go back to Eastman and Laird's original work and take stuff from all spectrums: 80's-90's cartoon, new cartoon, comics, wherever. I also think it's time we get Krang, Utroms, Triceratons, Baxter Stockman, Rat King, Leatherhead, and not just Shredder and the Foot Clan.

As for casting I'd have:

Casey Jones-

Leatherhead- Depending on which version you're going for (the Cajun or the incredibly intelligent alligator).
Triceraton- Michael Clark Duncan

R-Rated :(

While I grew up on the Turtles and will check this out, I've always wanted to see a R-rated movie in the same light of the comic books. I know I'll never see it since the cartoons made them kid freindly. I've always pictured Ralph getting pissed and running a guy threw with his Sia and picking him up off the ground.

No Question. Chris Evans of course. With regards to a remake, this is probably one that requires a remake. I feel the original can be improved on further, though it is still good, and a childhood favorite of mine. The again, these are the same people who gave us NOES and Friday the 13th, so it depends on who they get to write and direct it.

That's a tough one. Elias Koteas was tragically under used and now he has no hair. I wish Scott Adkins could act. Maybe Jared Padalecki or Cole Hauser.

It would have been pretty cool if Thug #1, Sam Rockwell, could have come full circle and played him, but it's not likely now with his level of success.

ALL FOR IT

I indulge in the turtles because they are fun and sometimes dark. I've enjoyed them in their various iterations for what they are, and I'm going to go into this new movie open minded. The first two old movies are great, you never know if a new one could restore them to their former glory.

Why can't Bay go away?

I adore the Ninja Turtles. Even when they're bad they're good. However if it's anything to do with Michael Bay I just won't watch it. I refuse to support this guy. I haven't seen a Bay movie or Platinum Dunes movie in years. They can't handle it. Not properly. Not well.

I loved the CG TMNT a few years back. I was so excited by the movie I couldn't wait for a sequel. Go figure. I finally want a sequel and it never gets made.

Why won't Bay just leave us and our beloved franchises alone? Why

I love the original. LOVE IT. But I'm down to see what can happen if it's rebooted. Hopefully, he will bring them back to their vicious badass comic roots. If it's not good, I still have the 3 live-action and CG movies on my shelf.

Platinum Dunes? I expect nothing short of half-assed and uninspired. The Turtles deserve better.
I could see Garrett Hedlund and Alison Lohman as Casey and April, respectively.

Not sure how I feel about this yet, because I would love to see a new TMNT movie on the big screen again, but I want a darker approach not a lite friendly kid's take. I am a huge fan of TMNT and really hope that if this does go through that it is not butchered to death.

Where the Wild Things Are was a great movie, and I would much rather see Legendary Pictures making this than Platinum Dunes. Although I'd like a darker take on the turtles, Platinum Dunes hasn't really impressed me yet.

Much as I did love TMNT as a kid, I don't know about this. I skipped the animated movie cuz they weren't doing Shredder, and gave Raphael an obnoxious New Yawk accent. And he was my favorite. In a time when more real-world superheroes are in, I might be persuaded to check out something a little more light (except Shredder, he shouldn't be light).

Great, cause Platinum Dunes has such a great track record of other reboots and remakes. Give it back to Legendary Pictures. At least with that studio it had more of a fighting chance.

I was fine with this until PLATINUM DUNES. I don't want my Turtles pissing on people and eating pot brownies. I bet Splinter will be voiced by Theo Huxtable.

BTW: Taylor Kitsch and Bryce Dallas Howard would have been my Casey & April.

I'm not as psyched for the movie as when I was a kid. I think that Taylor Kitsch would make a great Casey Jones, but I doubt he'd do it.
