Michael Keaton would do a Beetlejuice sequel in a heartbeat

06.07.2010

The mere thought of this ever happening sends my heart into a frenzy.

The first movie I ever fell in love with was about the ghost with the most, BEETLEJUICE. Of course, I wanted to be Lydia, the depressed goth chick played by Winona Ryder.

A sequel never once crossed my mind. I figured that Tim Burton would not go back and touch any of these characters again.

However, two of the original cast members would be up for a second chapter.

Moviehole spoke with Geena Davis last month who seemed very excited about the idea, "It's funny, [another journalist] just asked me about a sequel to BEETLEJUICE - which, though I haven't heard anything about it, might be interesting. I would do that!" The actress then pondered on how it would work, "Thing is, do ghosts age? Wouldn't we be stuck in the age we were? Alec [Baldwin] and I would have to look as we did then - who knows, maybe we could? I better get in touch with Tim Burton."

Then yesterday at the TOY STORY 3 junket, Moviehole spoke with Michael Keaton about the possibility. It went a little something like this:

Moviehole: "Not sure if you know this but they're going to show BEETLEJUICE at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery..."

MK: "Oh Cool."

MH: "We were wondering, is there going to be a sequel? I heard Geena Davis is ready to go if it happens."

MK: "Oh, I'd do that in a heartbeat."

MH: "Would you do it?"

MK: Absolutely, that's the one thing I'd love to do again.

MH: "That's great."

MK: "That's the only one I'd love to do."

It would be great to see Keaton back in the black and white stripes, but I just don't see it ever happening.

However, I still want my own "Handbook for the Recently Diseased", I mean "Deceased".

Extra Tidbit: "Nice f*ckin' model!"

I was literally watching this with my brother last week and said "Michael Keaton could still play Beetlejuice." And he could! Beetlejuice is supposed to be like centuries old anyway.

YES!

No remake! No 3D! No CGI! Just KEATON. Don't care about the others, except for maybe Alec. Dude is on fire lately.

As Paul Blart would say-"here's a fun fact for ya" I was reading where Tim Burton claimed he originally wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to play the role of Beetlejuice?! but alas, the suits essentially said no dice! lol

I love Keaton.. he took some shitty choices after Batman and wound up fading away.. which sucks. I would have loved to see how his career turned out if Batman Forever wasn't a huge pile of shit that forced him to drop out.

If the internet can get Betty White to host SNL, it surely could get a sequel made to a beloved 80's movie.

You couldn't do it with Geena and Alec's characters. Maybe have Lydia die and set it mostly in the afterlife. They could have all the dead folk from the first film still sitting there waiting, 20+ years later. How kick ass would that be? XD

Sure.

More Michael Keaton would be great. It's a shame he's hasn't been in movies a whole lot in the past decade. Hopefully Toy Story 3 kicks things off for him again.

And what about Steve Guttenberg? We need him back too.

If you can do an "Expendables" with '80s/'90s Action guys, why not do the one with old Comedians? I'm sure Tom Hanks would be up for it...

I'm really surprised there's no Beetlejuice sequel at all. I love Beetlejuice as a kid and I still do. For me, there's one condition: what makes Beetlejuice a classic is its special effect. It doesn't look computer graphic but it looks very practical. At least let the special effect be the same style or at least animatronics, not too CGI. And Keaton must be Beetlejuice!!

The only reason I say no to this is-Burton. Burton is a very different director than he was when he made Beetlejuice. His movies now are so 'weird funny', not creepy like the good ol' days. I don't even consider him a director to look out for anymore, especially after wonka and alice.

I would LOVE a Beetlejuice 2, and seeing Keaton again would be fabulous. But Burton would f' it up.

Do it.

Lordy, Burton - spend a 6th of your regular budget, get some good sets in order, get Keaton and some good, under-used character actors, and do it, for fun. Even as a mis-fire it would be more fun and mean more than Alice in Friggen Wonderland. But then it wouldn't make Burton much money nor improve his powerhouse image, so...yup, never mind.

Beetlejuice is, along with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, one of my beloved childhood movies. Michael Keaton could do it, too, because of all that makeup (plus he doesn't look half-bad for his age, just not in "The Other Guys").

As much as I'd like to see Geena Davis back in the spotlight, I think the Barbra/Adam storyline might've played itself out. There's no way Alec Baldwin could get all those pounds off.

I know Burton has been taking a lot of crap these days for being unoriginal, but this would be the one project I actually wish he would revisit. Especially if Michael Keaton reprises his role as the ghost with the most!

Well DUH!

It's not like he's doing much of anything at the moment, so of course he'd do a sequel to an old movie of his. They should have asked him if he'd do a sequel to Multiplicity just to fuck with him.

HELL YEAH

Love to see BEETLEJUICE on screen's again. It doesn't have to have Baldwin and Davis in it they could create a new story with a new family, But please bring back Lydia.

I wouldnt mind getting another Beetlejuice score by Danny Elfman, it's one of my favorite themes by him. This could work, and would probably be better than Burton trying another remake. I'll remain cautiously optimistic for now.
Also, I use to like the old Beetlejuice cartoon show. Anyone know if it's DVD or Hulu or anything?

no

That movie is in a particular place and time. You can't go back there again, I don't think. Plus, yes - they are all much older. Why would ghosts age? They wouldn't. Unless they did the whole thing motion capture or animated or something it wouldn't work. Just leave it alone.
