Netflix open to more Marvel shows, says any character could get a spin-off

01.18.2016

Marvelís partnership with Netflix has been quite the success as both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have proven to be a hit with Marvel fans. Daredevil already has a new season on the way, Jessica Jones was recently renewed for a second season, and with Luke Cage in production, Iron Fist and The Defenders on the way, and a rumoured Daredevil spin-off focusing on The Punisher, I think itís safe to say that Marvel and Netflixís partnership will continue onwards.

Netflixís†chief content officer Ted Sarandos spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour over the weekend, and while he didnít mention the rumoured Punisher spin-off, he did say that itís possible that any of the Marvel television characters could get their own spin-off.

Any character thatís in there is on the table Ö Itís always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.

However, you shouldnít expect to see a sudden flood of Marvel shows popping up on Netflix, Sarandos says that due to the large scale of these productions, they want to make sure they donít stretch themselves too thin.

Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so there are long production times and long post times. In some cases, when we have character crossover, it makes it more difficult to manage production. Itís not the goal to put out more than one or two out a year.

Itís nice to hear that theyíre going to restrain themselves, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones were such promising beginnings to the Marvel/Netflix partnership that itíd be a shame to see them (and others) suffer due to Marvel biting off more than they can chew. The second season of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix on March 18, 2016.

Which Marvel/Netflix television characters would you like to see get a spin-off?

This would be a great way to reboot the Fantastic Four.

They could definitely make it more personal, and reintroduce Dr. Doom.

I'm a little surprised that Jessica Jones season 2 was already announced, I thought the idea was to do the Defenders. I guess they can do solo seasons AND a group thing, but that just seems like it's going to start getting messy. Or maybe they'll just leave everyone solo...anyway, I'm enjoying the ride so really wherever they decide to take me I'm cool with it.

If the production quality remains the status quo like we have seen on Daredevil and JJ then I am all in. I could watch these all day. Right now though, I just wan't Iron Fist cast and ready to roll already.

Punisher, Elektra, Moon Knight and Blade are probably all coming. Snipes isn't getting any younger so he will be recast. I think we will have full on Hellcat in The Defenders but not a separate series. Daredevil Season 3 will probably be delayed until after The Defenders comes out. There probably won't be a Jessica Jones Season 3 although Heroes For Hire could spin off of The Defenders as well.

Why do you say no Jessica Jones season 3? The first season was a huge success and a really good story. It was one of the top shows on Netflix the month it debuted. And it attracted a lot of comic book and non-comic book fans. As long as season 2 is a success, there is no reason why they wouldn't push for a season 3.

Right now, I'd say a Moon Knight series is the furthest thing from anyone's mind. He's not THAT popular of a character and he doesn't have the mass appeal like other characters being developed or rumored to be developed. I know JJ wasn't that popular either, but part of the appeal of the show is that it was a superhero show that wasn't about superheroes - that has a lot more mass appeal than ANOTHER superhero show.

I'd say Punisher is probably going to happen either right before or right after Defenders. They're probably waiting to see the fans' reactions to Elektra in season 2 before pushing the green light on a spinoff for her. Blade is probably in development (secretly), although I hope you're right they recast Snipes instead of going for the other rumored avenue of using Blade's daughter as the main protagonist.

There are several reasons why there probably won't be a Jessica Jones season 3.

The comic book only lasted 28 issues. With two seasons they will have done 26 episodes. I realize they aren't following the comics to the letter but now that the Killgrave arc has been adapted the logical thing to do is the Mutant Growth Hormone arc. MGH is now IGH which presumably stands for Inhuman Growth Hormone. There are storylines in the comics involving mutants, Spider-Man, Ant Man, etc. that they

MGH is now IGH which presumably stands for Inhuman Growth Hormone. There are storylines in the comics involving mutants, Spider-Man, Ant Man, etc. that they couldn't do. I suspect the only reason why we are getting a Jessica Jones season 2 now is because Iron Fist hasn't been cast yet. Iron Fist was originally expected tocome out this year but they did Daredevil Season 2 instead. Even if Iron Fist were cast today, we probably would have to wait until last next year to see it because presumably the script isn't finalized. Jessica Jones Season 2 is something they can start working on right away for earlt 2017 release: that was something that Marvel proved with Daredevil; from start of production to release will have been less than a year.

Netflix have been complaining that the Marvel series are expensive. Yes, they want more but only "1 or 2 out a year" or about a new season or a new series "every six months". I imagine Orange is The New Black is much cheaper for them because the whole series is set inside a woman's prison. Until Netflix budges from this position or until Marvel decides to make extra Netflix series for free we are not going to see three or more series a year. Some people seem to think this is a good thing because it means that we will see quality rather than quantity.

We know that Daredevil Season 2 and Luke Cage are coming out this year. Next year will probably bring us Jessica Jones Season 2 and Iron Fist. Presumably we will get The Punisher and The Defenders in 2018. 2019 is up in the air but I suspect we will get Daredevil Season 3 and Heroes for Hire. Heroes for Hire will probably deal with Jessica Jones' finding out she is pregnant and that will mean sidelining her for a while. Because Heroes for Hire would probably involve Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, Jessica Jones and Trish Walker there will probably be a Season 2 of Heroes for Hire in 2020.

I could see Moon Knight coming in 2020, Elektra and Blade coming in 2021, a fourth season of Daredevil coming in early 2022 and the whole thing being wrapped up with The Defenders Season 2 in late 2022. That will be eight years of programming and a total of 208 hours of episodes which is three and a half times what Netflix originally signed on for. The Marvel Netflix collaboration will have been a huge success. I'm not sure where they could go from there: I'd be worried about the level of quality suffering.

I can't see it happening. I'm sure it could make for a great show. But I don't think the character is THAT popular outside of hardcore comic book fans. And besides the character would be too similar to Punisher in many respects that the show would seem redundant. I just don't think a full on series could get that much traction with the general audiences on Netflix.

That being said, it could be cool to see him pop up in various shows. Kind of becoming a reoccurring character that is the

I don't know if Marvel really needs to stretch any more of their characters into spinoffs (unless the story calls for it obviously), but I would like to see Daredevil and or Punisher make an appearance in the MCU films or vice versa.

HOWARD THE DUCK

Howard the Duck is seriously due for a comeback! Ever since his little cameo in GOTG and he'd be more at home in one of the R-Rated Netflix Marvel shows.
