Nicolas Winding Refn’s Maniac Cop remake shoots this summer! Casting begins

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It seems like forever ago now that we brought you the news that NEON DEMON helmer Nicolas Winding Refn was going to be bringing us a new version of the 80s slasher classic MANIAC COP.

Today we finally have news that the film is set to shoot this summer in Los Angeles, and casting is underway. Producer Lene Børglum told Variety that the new MANIAC COP will not be a pure horror film but rather a contemporary and realistic action thriller.

Børglum said the project took years to get off the ground because it took time to secure the rights, find the right director, and collect the financing. Now, even though Refn will be creatively involved in this remake, the new MANIAC COP will be directed by John Hyams (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING).

Producer Lene Børglum on John Hyams.

The reason why we wanted to work with John Hyams is because we love his visual style and his ability to work extremely well on a limited budget.

The MANIAC COP remake synopsis:

Set in the present day L.A., a determined L.A. police officer sets out to reveal the truth about the brutal murders of innocent people by one of her fellow cops.

MANIAC COP is written by Refn and Ed Brubaker (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER), and directed by John Hyams. Original MANIAC COP creator William Lustig is serving as a producer on the new film.
