With THOR gearing up to begin filming in just about two months, sets are being built and the cast is being finalized. Just the other day, the Warriors Three were announced and today we get one last piece of casting news for the film. Idris Elba has signed on to play Heimdall, one of the trusted servants of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and the guardian of Asgard.

In the comics, Heimdall was the brother of Sif and while it's possible they may keep that angle for the movie, Elba and actress Jaimie Alexander don't exactly look like siblings. Elba recently wrapped filming on another comic movie, the Warner Bros. adaptation of THE LOSERS. You may remember him also from "The Wire" or his brilliant guest stint on "The Office" as Charles Miner, the executive who causes Michael Scott to briefly launch his own paper company. As previously mentioned, THOR begins filming in Los Angeles this January for a May 20, 2011 release date.

nobody is looking down on any race, Heimdall is more than just a fictional character, he is part of a pantheon of gods. a mighty and ancient religion that is probably still alive today, at least in some sort.

These are some really racist comments that are coming out of the woodwork. Why the fuck is everyone getting so damn worked up over a mythological FICTIONAL character being white or black? I have never seen a reaction as large as this to such casting in terms of race. A fucking shame too since Elba is a damn good actor.

I don't think this casting choice is because of political correctness at all. It's just...weird. But kinda cool, I think. I'm surprised there are so many white folks upset about this. Don't worry, you guys are still on top.

He's a beast of a dude who towered over most other actors on The Wire and he has superb acting chops. Loved him on The Office where he consistently turned Jim into a stuttering dunce.

To be honest I dont care that Elba is playing Heimdall, I mean the Marvel Asgard is nothing like the norse mythologial Asgard, afterall in the Norse mythos Thor had red hair, not blond. Also one of the Warrior's Three is obviously of Asian descent. So what's to say Odin doesn't allow other worthy souls to grace his realm. Afterall it is a realm of warriors and I don't think Odin discriminates...

The namne Heimdal comes from; Heim = World and dallr = tree, etymologi tells that the name refer to "Yggdrasil", the worldtree, a Norse/Viking definition of the universe/Milky Way, if you like he was "the god of heaven".

Elba would have looked very odd in Lotr
or any Norse mythology/fantasy. Tadanobu is fine, Samis, Eskimos, Eastern European people have been around Scandinavia. But a black person in that setting will make it look preposterous, like Eragon or something.

What's with the fucking hate? soboyle made good point in that we have no idea what an asgardian necessarily looks like. I don't see why there can't be at least one black norse warrior. I'm pretty sure Branagh knows what he's doing since nearly every bit of casting has been spot on. I think it's a great move, which helps that Elba is a damn good actor.

uuummm have any of you ever seen an asgardian? i'm pretty sure they don't exist so i think that gives marvel free reign to cast who ever they want. Plus that guy was damn good in the office. i can totally see him kicking ass as a norse god.

I have to agree. No issues with black Actors but I'm pretty sure that black Norse Warriors were rare and black Norse Gods, rarer still.
