by: Niki Stephens Dec. 11, 2009

It's nearing that time again. What time is that? When we choose our picks for the Oscars.

The folks over at Movie City News have put together their comprehensive list of nominees from various critics. Here is what they have thus far:

1.) UP IN THE AIR

2.) PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE

3.) THE HURT LOCKER

4.) INVICTUS

5.) UP

6.) AN EDUCATION

7.) NINE

8.) INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

9.) AVATAR

10.) A SERIOUS MAN

What do you think of this list? Is there a movie that should be in this top ten, but isn't? In January, the Golden Schmoes will start up again and it will be your turn to vote for what you deem worthy. For the rest of the list from Movie City, head on over here. The 82nd Academy Awards will air March 7, 2010.

Kinda Weak
The sad part is that I can't think of any other movies to go into the top 10. Really, these are the 10 best films of the year? C'mon, Hollywood! Haha!!

I've seen 4 of the ones in the top 10 and The Hurt Locker seems to be the best. The first woman to win Best Director can (and should) be Kathryn Bigelow.

Ehh...
These are kinda disappointing predictions... I'm glad to see a lot, but I'm not keen on Avatar making the list... To be honest, I'm a little surprised to see Inglorious Bastards as well... Not that I'm complaining... But I personally woulda liked to see The Road, or even (500) Days of Summer, as the dark horse of the year. I am excited to see them mention The Hurt Locker... I was starting to...

I was starting to worry that wouldn't get the recognition it deserved... Who knows. Maybe when the actual noms come out, it'll probably get edged out by The Blindside.

It's not about giving false hope. 10 noms is good cause now more people can advertise that their movie was nominated for Best Picture on the DVD cases...and they can rerelease in the movie theatres.

AVATAR in the list? Hell no!
I simply agree with all of them but, Avatar is far from being deserved in that list. It'll be a worthy winner when it comes to Best Visual Effects, but within a category so prestigious as Best Picture? Noooooooot a chance!

!STAR TREK!
Star Trek deserves to be on the list. Not win, but at least be nominated - 96% on rottentomatoes, I mean come on! Up should not be nominated for best picture. They have a category for that. And I've heard mixed things about Avatar as well. Hmmm, let's hope this isn't exactly the list, but I'm convinced it'll be pretty close to this. STAR TREK!

10 films?!?!
All that does is give a few directors false hope. They know they won't win. They hope they will, but they basically know they won't win. The Academy is stupid for choosing 10 films for best picture.

I haven't seen Avatar but from the reviews I read of here, It doesn't sound like it should be on the list instead of District 9. District 9 was an extraordinary film with a great main character and a strong story. I think Up was the best of the best so far though.

I would include the Road.

I think critics are too snobby when it comes to judging movies. They seem to think all movies should/do intend the same out comes, in which ways they do, selling a lot of box office tickets. However they don't judge movies relevant to their content alot of times. They seem to place one standard that every movie should live up to. I mean action is action,...

So bunch of jerk offs at MOVIECITYNEWS sits and predicts that those movies up their deserves the award.

First of all, I don't think INVICTUS, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, NINE and UP IN THE AIR deserves the nominations in first place. With all due respect to their cast and crew.

The most important film is not listed. I am talking about THE ROAD.

Yeah. I mean, Star Trek just MIGHT get the nomination (that's one big MIGHT, it is scifi, after all), but win? Sadly, not a chance.

I loved Star Trek. But Too bad it's not the type to make this kinda list. Great sci-fi films need to be recognized somewhere other than in technical achievement categories.

If they show reaction shots of the nominees at least two shots will show happy people after "Up" is read. Then one happy shot as the rest of the title is read out, or not.

[The wording isn't great but this made more sense in my head]

Variety, the Hollywood Reporter and the Sun have all praised the film as well.

Well, the purpose of a trailer is to give intelligent people enough of a taste to decide whether or not to plunk down their hard earned cash, so my own judgment based on the advertising is "wait for Bluray."

I'd swap out Avatar for District 9. If the reviews are to be believed it seems the effects are stunning (I should hope they are, considering the money they spent) but the story lacks substance.

And though I haven't seen them yet, given the buzz surrounding them, Moon, The Road, The Lovely Bones, and Where The Wild Things Are should probably be up there.

The Same thing can be said about Titanic, and each and every movie Cameron directed. Its his quality direction and thousand other subtle elements that make all of them gems (well not so much True Lies).
