Rebecca Hall joins Johnny Depp in Wally Pfister's debut sci-fi pic Transcendence

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES cinematographer, Wally Pfister, is set to make his directorial debut with the sci-fi pic TRANSCENDENCE and has now added another solid performer to bring it to life. IRON MAN 3's Rebecca Hall has now joined the already cast Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany in the Jack Peglan scripted film. The secretive project revealed a small synopsis from producer Andrew Kosove a short while ago, which goes like this:

The plot involves a scientist whose brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer with the aim of creating the worlds first machine that can think for itself.

Sounds very INCEPTION-meets-THE TERMINATOR to me, which isn't a bad thing. The cast alone is already shaping this into something worthwhile and the fact that it's a sci-fi pic with a high profile cinematographer at the helm adds another layer of intrigue.

TRANSCENDENCE starts shooting next month with a targeted release date of April 25, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: I kind of fell in love with Rebecca Hall with Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Highly recommended.

She's very talented and a great actress. Looking forward to seeing her in Iron Man 3. She was awesome in The Prestige and The Town.

Also, boobs.

The scene in TDK where Batman has fallen of his Batpod and the Joker approaches him with a machine gun is, one of the most beautifully lit and shot moments in cinematic history for me.

So, what the fuck happened on TDKR? I seriously thought while watching it that Mr. Pfister had been replaced or something. I'd like to hear some thoughts on this, not just get thumbed down by enraged fanboys.

You just described a very particular scene, and then wonder why the next movie didn't feature anything like that? I mean, contrivances aside, TDKR, I thought, was pretty beautifully shot. A lot more of it took place in daylight, and Bane was a much different villain than the Joker. They didn't film in Chicago this time, so maybe that had something to do with it, too.

I didn't say that the cinematography of TDKR was disappoining to me because it didn't look like TDK. I'm saying that I just thought it looked pretty cheap, almost digital. Even Batman Begins looked way more cinematic and beautiful than TDKR. I understand that they wanted to go for a bit of a different look (even though the chase scene with the Batpod looks like it was composed of extra footage from TDK) but it shouldn't have been at the expense of the quality of the look of the film.

So who will he pick as cinematographer? That is if he doesn't do it himself obviously. But pulling double duty on a film this size seems like a daunting task for a first time director regardless of how many movies he's shot.

Whoever he hires will instantly be on my radar. No matter what you think about Nolan's films, Pfister's pictures are oh so pretty and anyone he trusts enough to basically take his job has got to be damn good.

Rebecca Hall is gorgeous, I think she's really close to becoming a big-time A-lister and I can't wait to see her in Iron Man 3. Fully agree that she was very good in Prestige and especially The Town. This project sounds very cool so far with all those involved in front of and behind the camera, high-concept sci-fi if done right is always very cool.

Nice! Glad Pfister will be working with former cast members from his previous work. I thought Rebecca Hall was exceptional in The Prestige.
