Review: After Earth

After Earth
May. 30, 2013by:
4 10

PLOT: In a future where mankind has had to abandon Earth and has found a new home on a colony called Nova Prime, humanity's greatest warrior, Cypher Raige (Will Smith) has just come back from a long tour of duty to be reunited with his son Kitai (Jaden Smith). He takes Kitai with him on a routine training mission, but a deep-space calamity leaves them marooned back on Earth. With both of Cypher's legs broken, it's up to Kitai to find a beacon that will signal their presence. Now, Kitai not only has to navigate the treacherous environment, but he's also being stalked by a dangerous alien from Nova Prime that was on-board the ship when it crashed.

REVIEW: I'll give AFTER EARTH some credit; it's better than M. Night Shyamalan's last couple of movies. It's not as mind-numbingly awful as THE LAST AIRBENDER or as unintentionally funny as THE HAPPENING. At times it actually comes close to being relatively decent movie. Sadly, those moments are all within the first twenty minutes or so before the big crash that sets the plot in motion and sidelines star Will Smith, leaving the film in the hands of his now teenage-son Jaden.

I guess it was inevitable that, after the success of the KARATE KID reboot (which actually wasn't a bad movie) it was only a matter of time before Jaden got a big tent-pole action movie of his own. While Smith is an OK young actor, it can't be forgotten that he's been made into a movie star through his father's mega-stardom, and putting him in an action movie where he's not only the star but virtually the only actor on-screen for 80% of the running time is a big burden for any actor to carry. Will Smith did it fairly well in I AM LEGEND, but he was a seasoned pro by this point- Jaden Smith is not. He's still an OK actor, but he doesn't have much of a personality, and watching him as he tries to navigate a heavily CGI'd Earth (complete with lots of CGI baboons, vultures, mutant snake-birds, etc) is pretty boring.

That said, even if Jaden Smith had been a wonderful actor, I'm still not convinced AFTER EARTH would have really been worth watching. The plot is right out of a video game, and obviously designed with kids in mind, as Smith has to navigate obstacles, creatures, and recharge every so often with an oxygen capsule to stay alive. Wanna bet he starts running out of capsules? The film's major drama comes from whether or not Jaden will be able to ghost meaning stop secreting fear pheromones when he comes face-to-face with the alien from Nova Prime as it's the only way the alien can see him. It feels so much like a video-game that I was half expecting a little monitor for fear, and another for life to pop up in the corner of the screen. Luckily, AFTER EARTH never gets quite that bad, but it's still like watching someone else play a video-game for ninety minutes, with little in the way of drama or character development. I get that it's for kids, but I'd bet even kids will find this dull, and the psychobabble about fear being an option is gobbledygook.

Nevertheless, AFTER EARTH does have a few things going for it. The CGI is terrible, but some of the scenery on Earth is nice. The musical score by James Newton Howard is excellent, and Will Smith, while only on-screen here and there, is good in his limited role, although the strange accent everyone uses is a very eccentric (and unnecessary) addition to the film.

So, while it's not as stunningly bad as THE HAPPENING or THE LAST AIRBENDER, AFTER EARTH still isn't a very good film in it's own right. M. Night Shyamalan probably still has a decent film in him somewhere, as he's visually still a solid director and capable of making interesting set pieces, but AFTER EARTH isn't the film that's going to revitalize his career.

Sorry, but I saw this last night and thought it was very fun. I think the thing that might turn some people off is that it's such a quiet and unassuming flick. But all of M. Night's movies, good or bad, have been quiet ones; it's like watching an idie flick with Will Smith in it. When watching it, it's better to remember it's not an action flick. It's not a perfect movie, but I had a blast with it.

The entire Smith clan needs to go away, only to return After Earth. Hopefully something totally hostile to twats will eat them.

I thought it was good!

I saw it last night and enjoyed it and haven't enjoyed a M. Night film since Signs. Though the first 5 mins was pretty cheesy due to horrible editing, and at that point I was thinking here we go again another shitty movie from M. Night but once it got going it turned out to be a fun, exciting and intense movie. I feel like it's the thing to rip on his movies now(Last airbender did suck pretty bad unlike the cartoon series which is one of the best series ever!) I thought this movie was pretty

Hey your not alone.....I thought the movie has been getting bashed too; dialogue isn't the best but I did not go into this movie thinking I was going to watch an Oscar contender here. I see all the thumbs down.....this place is filled with haters lately....too bad, it used to be nice here.

Shyamalan honestly seems to have lost whatever he had. I enjoyed his first 4 thrillers, and even found some good qualities in his ego-trip "Lady In The Water" and the massively flawed "The Happening". But he just doesn't have the capacity to create anything intriguing or special anymore, it seems.
Add on to that, Will Smith and his brood are some of the most unlikable, obnoxious, and grating "stars" in Hollywood. Will himself can hardly act as it is, and his children are so remarkably bland,

Here's to hoping American filmgoers will eventually figure out his plan to buy Hollywood for his family.

Too bad it sucks.

Seems like some ejaculate over bad reviews. What a waste of time. You don't really want M. Night to stop making movies because you love complaining about them with the rest of the lowest common denominators.

I really didn't know they were still letting M. Night Shyamalan make movies anymore....amazing. The guy makes two movies that were pretty good, one that was amazing, and the 10 that were HUGE PILES OF STINKING DOOKi and he can still get 'loans' to make big pictures...Hollywood is a losers paradise....which way do i go?

I wish he'd stop making movies

I agree with Fat-Womanizer below. The sixth sense was boring, unthrilling, poorly directed, over acted trash. And everything he's put out since has been. (I've never seen Unbreakable). Want a good ghost story that came out at the same time but got less hype, but is still the better movie by a long shot, watch Stir Of Echoes.

Thank you.

My expectations for this film were kinda high, but with a rating like that those expectations have been squashed. Now I'll probably enjoy it because I have no expectations at all. Good review. Over on this side of the planet it's due next week, giving Fast 6 more time to rake in the dough.

I knew Shyamalan was a overrated when I saw "the sixth sense". A short movie blown out of proportion. He builded his whole career around a gimmick...

I am pretty sure this is a direct sequel to the Happening..... Man Kind had to leave earth after the events of the Happening because mother nature was killing all the humans. enter 200 years later... they crash land and mother nature is not very pleased..

Honestly I don't care how this movie turns out. Just stay in your universe, The Smiths. Don't come to other franchises like The Fast & The Furious. You might louse things up.

"The musical score by James Newton Howard is excellent"

That's his bad luck. He makes wonderful music to terrible movies. His Las Airbender composition was Oscar-worthy - but he was left out because the movie itself was desliked by many.

If you're going to hate on Shyamalan

Hate on him for being a doormat, at least for this picture. I know a guy who worked on this film, and confirmed what I suspected - that M. Night had very little input. This was Will Smith assembling a movie around his son. Creative decisions were ultimately his. I'm not defending M. Night - his own piss-poor creative decisions got him into this corner in the first place. I just hate to see knee-jerk "It feels good to hate on M. Night because everybody else does" obscure the real decision making

If you are going to blame him for something, blame him for winding up in this situation, and for lying down to take a paycheck and not walking away.

Touching the burner and realizing its hot - Signs
Touching the burner again, kind of burnt my hand - The Village
Holding my hand on the burner until my hand is burnt badly - Lady in the Water
Taking my other hand and holding down my hand on the burner until my hands disinagrate - The Happening

I have no hands left, won't be seeing this.

Figured, this film looked pretty dull. I prefer a seasoned actor to carry a film if he/she is going to be in it for most of the screen time. It feels as if M. Night is trying to make the stars the reason to make the dull looking film good, but I'm not buying it. And your review proves it. M. Night was successful some years back, and when he lost his cred, it seems as if he's trying all the things he said he wouldn't do. I remember him mentioning that he will keep coming out with original work

Now he's fitting in with tentpole blockbuster attempts.

Remember when

Will Smith said he turned down the lead in Django Unchained because he wasn't the "hero" and, therefore, it wasn't the kind of movie he could do. Well, he took this pile of @#$% instead. Gotta think Big Willie's instincts aren't all that acute when it comes to the scripts he's considering. He just wants another blockbuster (see: MIB3). Quality doesn't find its way into the decision-making equation, only dollar signs. Too bad.

You consider the Bad Boys flicks non-safe as compared to Django, The Matrix, & whatever else Will has turned down? They're standard action garbage. Is that you, Martin Lawrence?

It's even worse than that, because this movie was Will Smith's idea. He hired the writer, served as producer, and brought M. Night on board. His wife and brother-in-law also served as producers, and he cast his son as the lead (as we all know). Therefore, he didn't pick this role; he created this role. This is his passion project, or vanity project, and he deserves much of the blame for its problems.

M. Night should get a pass...

Just hear me out. This film was essentially thought out by Will Smith as a simple father-son camping trip story that somehow ballooned to this big sci-fi POS that we have today. With that in mind, Will then approached M.Night with this concept and hired him (to direct), not the other way around. Naturally, Will had himself and his son in mind as the stars when he created this entire concept. Therefore I'm willing to bet M. Night was just doing the best with what he was given and figured "Will

Don't get me wrong, M. Night has successfully made films that tanked all on his own, but this one shouldn't be placed in the same category as said crap movies, in my opinion.

Not surprising. Like others have said, this movie hasn't struck me at all as something I'd pay $15 to see. And I'm not even an M Night hater, as I think he can still be good. The guy has vision, but he needs to be given a good script that he hasn't written himself. I think that's his biggest weakness is. Although given his trend, I don't see a studio trusting him with a high profile project.

Expected this, honestly. This film didn't excite me with it's trailer, and the fact that it's M. Night was telling. I just don't think M. Night handles sci-fi or action that well and should really get back into small character dramas like Sixth Sense and Unbreakable and stop with big budget Hollywood films. As for Jayden, I really don't have a problem with the kid or the fact that he gets help from dad, but I agree that he is not seasoned enough to be carrying such a massive film. He really

After Earth

I wasn't going to see this movie anyway but every review I've seen has been bad. This is actually the best review I've read. The rest gave it only one star or one and a half. Maybe Jaden does need to be emancipated and have the chance to pick better vehicles and directors to work with.

This movie looked like it had a lot of potential. Even if Jaden Smith is perhaps one of the worst actors to ever grace the screen. But WOW! a 4/10?!?! I don't think I've ever seen a rating that low. This must be really bad!

I still believe in this guy. I just REALLY think he needs a creative collaborator on the script level who can develop ideas WITH him and keep them grounded. This is what made Unbreakable so damn good. It was creative but grounded as a superhero film. It made it so gritty and almost believable. I still think the guy has something left in him. It just might take him much longer to find it again.

No shock really & thats not an excuse to really hate on Shyamalan, which it seems like people are doing. The movie doesn't really interest me & seems to be relying more on Will Smith's star appeal than M Night's

Damn, I was hoping M. Night would turn it around

but it sounds like AFTER EARTH was exactly what everyone thought it was: a vanity project for Will Smith to promote his son's acting career. The problem is that Shyamalan has serious problems as a writer and director, and they look like they're in full display here. I won't be watching this movie.

As a zookeeper, I feel like I would be paying too much attention to the animal inaccuracies instead of the movie itself. The trailer was bad enough.

M. Night is so terrible I can't believe he keeps getting films to make. He shows time and time again how crappy he is. This movie was destined to be garbage the second it was in production with him attached. Put this guy out of his misery and never pay to see some of his drivel again.
Will, get your act together. Make movies people want to see. Learn from this to never team with M. Night again.

Jaden has irritated me since I first saw him in DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. It's like he's remained in permanent whiner/brat mode even with KARATE KID. The fact that Will has had to be his backbone for all these movies doesn't help either, I know he's his Dad but it's time to cut the umbilical cord and see if he can carry something himself.

As for Shyamalan, I think he needs to go back to the beginning and realize once again why THE SIXTH SENSE was so loved.

AGREED. the only reason i think he worked in karate kid was because the character was supposed to be a whiny kid.

As we all feared, or for most, expected here. Honestly, I feel bad for M.Night, he's obviously a talented guy for writing and directing some great films. If he's going to remain in the game, I bet the studio will only give him projects like this that will never revitalize his career.

Will Smith needs to step it up. What happened Big Willy, you used to be good.
