Robert Downey Jr will star opposite Vera Farmiga, Robert Duvall and Vincent D'Onofrio in The Judge

Robert Downey Jr has spent so much of the last decade playing either Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes that when those other projects come along you take notice. So far, his non-franchise roles have been in THE SOLOIST and DUE DATE, two films not quite up to what Downey is capable of (TROPIC THUNDER is the lone exception).  This new project sounds interesting, but I am not sure exactly what to think of it yet.

The Hollywood Reporter has Vera Farmiga adding to the cast of Downey's THE JUDGE which also has Vincent D'Onofrio and Robert Duvall in the cast. Downey is producing the film as well which features him as a successful attorney who returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral only to discover that his estranged father (Robert Duvall), the town's judge, is the suspect of a murder. The man sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.

Farmiga will play a waitress in the small town with a past connection to Downey's character. Farmiga's series BATES MOTEL premiered yesterday to big numbers and has previously appeared in THE DEPARTED and UP IN THE AIR. She is a very talented actress who should bring some nice sexy to this dramatic-comedy. Downey definitely has the capability of bridging comedy and drama and I hope this role uses his smart-ass likeability. There is no word on a director for the project, but with shooting looking to start in June, one will likely be named soon.

Extra Tidbit: Downey starred in one of my all time favorite movies, CHAPLIN. I hope he gets another Oscar worthy role again soon.

I love a good dark dramatic comedy. I think the film sounds great with a terrific cast.

Robert Downey Jr is my favorite actor of all time so anything he is in already has my attention and money. And I thought The Soloist was a fantastic film (hence my username).

Jack Nicholson

heard RDJ originally wanted him to play the judge role but they couldn't get Jack. Too bad. Duvall is awesome and all, as is RDJ but I would've been SO much more excited for this film if Jack had been on board.

Sounds like it could be some Oscar bait here, which is fine. It'll be nice to see RDJ out of the Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes thing for a bit, playing a hopefully more down to earth, more real character. Btw I highly recommend checking out A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. RDJ has

RDJ has a great smaller role in it, and it is filled with great mind-changing performances, and the movie itself is pretty freakin great! Do check it out, worth tracking down.

My personal opinion is that Duvall is the better choice. He just seems to have a more 'serious' tone than Nicholson these days...if that makes sense.

A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints is one of my favorite films of all time and is so criminally underrated. Everyone in that film brings their A-game.

Such a great little film.

I gotta say though, I think Nicholson has that same sharp wit that Downey has, which would have been fun to see if the rumor is true.
