Rumor: Could J.J. Abrams return to direct Star Wars: Episode IX?

03.18.2015

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS fell to J.J. Abrams. STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII will go to Rian Johnson. However STAR WARS: EPISODE IX currently has no one at the helm. It was thought that Rian Johnson might tackle EPISODE IX after he completed EPISODE VIII but nothing was certain. Now it appears as though a different name has popped up in regards to EPISODE IX and it’s a name we’re already familiar with.

According to Latino-Review J.J. Abrams could very well be the front-runner for directing duties on STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. The site mentions that those at Disney who have been privy to his footage from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS have been very happy with what they’ve seen so far. That studio confidence could go a long way to getting him the job, should he want it.

Given how little we've seen of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I can’t really say whether having him return would be a good thing or not. Part of what has made this new Star Wars saga appealing is the variety of people involved. Personally I’d like to see another new director handle EPISODE IX with the hope of giving each installment its own flavour.

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX won’t be hitting theaters until 2019 so that still leaves us plenty of time to obsess over every little detail.

Would you be open to J.J. Abrams returning? If not, who would you rather see direct STAR WARS: EPISODE IX?

JJ All The Way!

I hope there is truth to this rumor and JJ Abrams returns to direct Star Wars Episode IX. Not only is he an excellent director, I love his passion and reverence for the original trilogy. Having a revolving door of directors for Star Wars isn't necessarily a good thing and I would love to see Abrams finish out the trilogy he started.

If we can't get the uniformity of one director, I'd like to see Cuaron bring his sensibility from Children of Men and HP3 to this one. Could be the new Empire (i.e. A totally awesome bummer).

Brad Bird would be nice, though I think I remember an article saying he wasn't interested. He might change his mind though. I'd have no problem with Abrams returning for IX, if he wants the job.

I'd prefer it if they had different directors for each film in the episodic run just to keep it fresh.

Let him come back for a spin off film if he has a story he wants to tell in that universe.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the finished product

So far, everything from The Force Awakens looks like a step in the right direction so I'm not against Abrams returning if the film is as good as everyone involved is claiming it to be. However, I would prefer if they stuck with the three different directors formula we saw in the original trilogy that way each episode feels exactly like it's suppose to be, episodic. I second the Brad Bird idea, but I definitely would love Matt Reeves or Duncan Jones although I'm sure Disney probably will give

I would rather see Brad Bird get a chance with this or perhaps Jon Favreau.

Vince Gilligan

Eh. It'd be nicely character driven and plot twisty.

At least there's not

a nostalgic desire to let George direct it.
I'm not fussed. I could rattle off a dozen directors who I'd be happy to see do it. The usual suspects. JJ would be fine.

The Star Wars theme played on a single 1980's synthesizer at a minimalistic, plodding pace.

He'd be more suited to having a crack at the Alien franchise.

Brad Bird...

Would love to see him get to play in the SW sandbox. He's proven his chops with both his animated films and M:I-4... Hopefully Tomorrowland kills it.

There are a lot of interesting choices out there, but a lot of which, I'd rather see helm a stand-alone film. As for the trilogy, I think it could be a positive to lend the same creative force behind it to wrap up the last installment. Since Rian Johnson is writing the treatment for 9, he and Abrams could tag-team the script and it could be a semi-team-up in a sort of 7 & 8. I'd be open to it. I've always thought Abrams was a great choice for this world.
