Shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar includes Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim, and more

01.06.2011

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday announced that they've whittled down their list of films that are up for the Best Visual Effects Oscar to seven contenders. Here they are, listed in alphabetical order:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1
HEREAFTER
INCEPTION
IRON MAN 2
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
TRON: LEGACY

I'm a little surprised to see that David Fincher's THE SOCIAL NETWORK didn't make the cut. But then again, subtle use of special effects (that are no less impressive than the those of a CG-heavy film... more impressive, really) is practically an art of its own. I mean, how do you compare the creation of something like the "Henley Sequence" to the in-your-face shit found in ALICE IN WONDERLAND?

The final list of nominees will consist of five films, which means two are going to be dropped. Which two, though? Tell us what you think below.
Extra Tidbit: Go INCEPTION!

The academy choose "movies" or "directors" over "sfx" for this list... Seriously, Hereafter wouldn't be here if it wasn't a Eastwood movie... Think what you want about the movies, but if 2012 wasn't an Emmerich movie and Transformers 2 a Bay movie, they WOULD have been nominated (and SHOULD HAVE, at least) the year of theyre release!

"Alice In Wonderland" has some of the worst, most rubbery, and obviously fake CGI I have ever seen! How in the bloody hell is it even being considered? Fuck that shit hardcore!

Hate it all you want, but "The Last Airbender" 's effects were much better!

Iron Man 2 should win but The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader should have been nominated over Hereafter.

Pilgrim nominated? Gimme a break.

A couple of those are obvious choices, but if anything "Pilgrim's" effects looked cheap. Plus I haven't seen worse body doubling EVER, who ever did the doubling of Cera. Plus it's a hugely overrated movie. It wasn't bad, but my god the 1st hour is boring as hell. I did enjoy the songs quite a bit & there should have been a lot more Chris Evans. I'm over Michael Cera playing Michael Cera too. It's old now & it isn't acting it's him. Seriously look at the last 6 movies he's done & he plays

After The Golden Compass beat out Transformers (love or hate the film, it's effects were out of control) I'll never know who will take this category until it comes out of the presenter's mouth.

Look, we'd all love to see Inception win. But it will go to a film with huge in-your-face visuals like Tron or Alice in Wonderland.

Most likely Inception or Harry Potter will win.

Like fury159 said below, I think Inception will be nominated for many awards (Best Picture, Director, Screenplay), but will probably only end up taking best original screenplay. I see The Social Network having a huge year at the Oscars.

Inception will take it. I won't win best picture or director, though maybe best original screenplay, though I doubt it. So, they'll give it this.

Hopefully Inception takes it. They'll probably give it to Alice In Wonderland cause recently the Academy always seems to severely fuck this category up.

As for The Social Network, it doesn't deserve a special effects nod. The two biggest effects used in that movie were doubling and tilt-shift, two of the easiest and most common visual effects ever. Don't get me wrong, it was my favorite movie of the year, and was by far the best-looking film of the year, but the effects weren't

No Shutter Island?

I thought Shutter Island was second to only Inception visually this year. Idk if there were many effects though just hope it gets some recognition.

Somehow I think Iron Man 2 and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will be out. But please let Tron: Legacy be nominated. The story got me confused a bit but visually it's very stunning.

All 7 had some choppy scenes, but...

Alice in Wonderland was in no way monumental, neither was Harry Potter or Iron Man. Hereafter's flood scene looked terrible, Scott Pilgrim was too cartoony, and Tron Legacy featured Jeff Bridges' super imposed head on another body...awkward. So I guess Inception deserves the win because most of it was practical anyway.

The Social Network should be in there...

But I reckon the final 5 will be Alice, Harry Potter, Inception, Scott Pilgrim and Tron.

TRON

If there is anything good in Tron Legacy it's the visual effects.
Inception is a masterpiece but because the movie was better should we take this award from Tron? The F/X team has nothing to do with the movie script or the direction.

Also, since when does this category have FIVE nominees? It has always been three.

whether it's three or five nominees depend on the number of eligible films. not sure about the limits, but say for example it there's 15 or more eligible films during the year then ther will be 5 nominees, if less than 15, there's going to be 3. something like that.
