Shredder has been recast for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2

04.27.2015

I recall a moment, albiet a brief one, when I was cautiously optimistic about TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES; I wasn't expecting it to be some grand work of art but surely an entertaining romp with these characters I loved as a youth wouldn't be too much to ask would it? You can insert your own rant here, I'm too tired. While the film didn't end up doing anything for me it certainly has its share of fans, as demonstrated by its worldwide box-office gross of $485 million, so it was only natural that a sequel would be on the way.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 won't arrive without some changes however; Tohoru Masamune filled the ridiculously armored suit of Shredder in the first film, but now Variety has reported that he's been replaced by Brian Tee. Tee has appeared in several big-budget blockbusters including THE FAST & THE FURIOUS: TOYKO DRIFT, THE WOLVERINE, and the upcoming JURASSIC WORLD. The reasons for this recasting aren't quite clear, perhaps Shredder will more to do in the sequel, or Masamune had other commitments, or I suppose it's even possible that this new Shredder is a completely separate character from the one in TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES.

With Bebop, Rocksteady, and Baxter Stockman already on board, the TURTLES sequel is starting to look a tad bit overcrowded with potential villains. Has there ever been a time that worked? Not everything needs to be jam-packed, save a little something for the next film. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 is set for a June 3, 2016 release.

One of Brian Tee's earliest roles was this brief one he shared with future Heroes star Masi Oka in AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER.

While I have no hope for this sequel, I'm not sure it's necessarily becoming overcrowded with villains. First, you need to have Shredder in the movie and Bebop and Rocksteady would serve as henchmen. As for Baxter Stockman, no one has said he'll necessarily be a villain or at least a main villain. I'd imagine that he'd be a significant supporting character working for Shredder, but doing nothing more than creating Bebop and Rocksteady as well as some mousers hopefully.

Yeah, I really hope they play it slow and don't pull an Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Just re-watched the first 4 seasons...

The comics, while the original and also amazing are not and never will be the "core" of this franchise. That distinction belongs to the cartoon, which launched TMNT into mainstream pop culture. It was funny but action packed, juvenile but smart and honestly a little crass in places. So were the movies. So was the remake. Everyone whines about Michealengelo's "shell tightening" but how is that any less crass than Donatello holding up April's panties and sniffing them in the 1990 film or the boob jokes in the 1987 cartoon? It's not, but most of you all just really wanted to hate it.. They definitely captured spirit and tone of the show and the original films (which I admit got progressively worse with ache sequel), and they clearly know about and care about the source material. I'm convinced that if Michael Bay hadn't produced it, at least a third of the haters would have been all about this shit. *shakes head*

Also, the shoe horned CG Shredder was the worst thing about the 2014 turtles and the actual actor had no screen time, so I gives no fucks if they recast.

i agree. though the last movie was riddled with horribleness, i felt bad for the guys actually playing the turtles, because they seemed to have at least tried to capture the spirit on the turtles i grew up with. well, except Leonardo. there wasn't really anything remotely Leo about him in that movie. but Raph was great. Donotello was pretty good, and Michaelangelo was just trying a little too hard (but at least he was trying).

You hit the nail on the head. People hear Michael Bay's name attached, they automatically call it crap even if it's a decent flick. People hear Tarantino's name attached, and they overhype it and call it one of the best movies they've ever seen, even if it's crap.

This is a movie about talking turtles that - like you said - didnt get popular until they made them kid friendly with the cartoons. Im not sure why everyone expected an adult-related film. People just gave it no chance once MB's

I've watched those movies hundreds of times and don't recall Donnie doing the sniffing thing.

He's sniffing in the background when they are first in April's apartment. It's not as on the nose as the shell joke, but it and other similar jokes are definitely present in the first film trilogy.

You nailed it acalebw. The complaining seems very Michael Bay targeted because IMO they nailed the actual turtle characters perfectly. When people complain about wanting the dark and gritty version from the early comics they don't realize how completely impractical making and marketing a film like that would be. As a side note the score by Brian Tyler on the new film is amazing.

It makes me wonder if Wolverines Silver Samurai Shredder will just be regular Shredder in TMNT2. Maybe take it back to basics, where the leader of the Foot is dangerous without total armour suit. The first 2 movies, That Shredder had such a strong appearance with less on him. Here's hoping that they find a way to bring that back.

Unless they change directors and writers, the movie will still be awful. Sure, it'll make a ton of money and lead to yet another sequel, but doesn't mean it's good. Like McDonald's hamburgers. By the way, I don't know how to contact the writer, but "albeit" and "Tokyo" got spelled wrong.

Thanks for the update. But sometimes the best director can only do so much with a bad script. Let's hope it'll be enjoyable, say, 7/10 or higher.

shredder recast...jesus why is this news? have you seen him in the movie? he could be completely cg and nobody would give a damn. hell, i thought he was a cg in the movie, like the rest of EVERYTHING nowadays. why? he's covered from head to toe with that stupid ass armor and not once do you ever see his face. not much range for acting on that one I'd say.

It was all right.....

I liked it better than a few movies I saw in 2014. My daughter had a blast so I didn't feel like I wasted my money. At least he knew what he was making (braindeadedness included) and made it fun to compensate.

Nowhere near as good as the animated film, but it wasn't any worse than the crap trilogy back in the 90s....."Go ninja, go ninja, go!" (Holy shit was that awful).
