Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum wants to return to Lex Luthor for Man of Steel sequel

Jun. 28, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Fans of Smallville no doubt know and recognize the tour de force performance that actor Michael Rosenbaum brought to the role of Lex Luthor throughout his tenure on the show. He was a terrific villain and played great against Clark Kent (Tom Welling), to the point that they were like Cain and Abel. Rosenbaum brought a lot to the role and played a signature Lex Luthor to be sure. Now that Smallville is done and MAN OF STEEL is taking the Superman mainstream mantle, the casting of Lex Luthor is in the air, as director Zack Snyder has teased his potential appearance in the follow-up. There are many good choices out there, but Rosenbaum has an idea for who he thinks should be the next Lex: Himself.

I'm not altogether opposed to the idea myself. Although, I think the resounding opinion would be that Rosenbaum already had his shot, I think there's real possibility there. He's much older than when he started out in Smallville (and older than Cavill) and has a terrific presence as the devious, brilliant character. Ultimately, this is a long shot, but I think producers should take a hard look at the possibility. It would be a ballsy and interesting choice, for sure.

Rosenbaum recently wrapped his first directorial feature OLD DAYS, which will debut later this year. MAN OF STEEL is currently in theaters.

Extra Tidbit: Rosenbaum is a bit of a loyal DC guy, having played Lex Luthor and voiced The Flash in the Justice League animated series.

As long as they make a great choice as long as he bald and young and like Michael Rosenbaum im cool with it like Michael Shannon okay not the best but okay Zod had the looks for it but not so much the voice but I think they want to try to find a different lex a diiiferent side of lex because different people can bring that in them if you were to compare Michael Rosenbaum and Kevin Spacey they are similar but not exactly the same and I think that is what Snyder is looking for more as in young

So to me its not so far fetched but I do imagine that there could be other great actors for the role but I have to see it to believe and to me Bradley Cooper seems to nice of a man to be that kind of guy but I could be wrong anyways good luck to all of the actors who are trying to be Lex Luthor hopefully Michael Rosenbaum if not some other great actor that is bald and make sure hes is bald please

I mean some people are right about the since its a big debut and all and I wouldn't want it to ruin the franchise but at least give him a look or bring him for screen testing or a cameo appearance cuz he has played lex luthor longer than any other man in the world so I know hes hooked on it but hes is so connected to that character! and I would do the same! if I was on a tv show and played character for a long time and then there was a movie role for the same character I would want to be it

Micheal Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor

Okay well I am a huge fan of Smallville and Michael Rosenbaum should be Lex Luthor because he Is still young but older and more wiser a lot of people think on other blogs and sites that smallville but take a look at the movie you have plenty of actors in the movie that were on Smallville the guy who played doctor in smallville, Jax ur or Dax ur played Lex's clone in the tenth season of smallville and Lois Lane herself was the shake drinking girl who wanted to lose weight and ended up eating

Like the Superman symbol the Big S or the symbol for hope on Cal el chest that is like lex luthors head if he has hair its not a lex luthor its more like a lionel luthor and I think lex should have no hair and also with lex luthor being so devious Michael Rosenbaum played it very well and to be honest Smallville was not a other worldly Clark Kent or superman it was just a tv show of Superman growing up is all before he becomes Superman sooooo I think Michael should play lex luthor in the movie and if he doesn't they better choose wisely and not Bradley cooper maybe Ralph Fiennes as Voldemoort from Hairy Potter he maybe a little older but he could the job done as well but not Bradley Cooper only if hes willing to shave his head for the role I know not all installments of Superman were all lex as bald but its his signature piece for him it gives his character character ya know so Michael Rosenbaum or at least someone who can get the job done! kevin spacey did a good job in SR!! so why not give Michael a chance but just choose wisely that's all I have to say

I would have taken the idea more seriously, then I read the actual text of the tweet. Comes across as rude. How about if Rosenbaum sticks to his own cancelled show?

That was Smallville, a tv show with different stories, actors and so on. MoS is something totally different. it wouldn't make sense to have him as Lex. I'd personally like to see Leonardo Dicaprio. I can see him trying to convince some senators/congressman about why they need LexCorp to develop anti-superman weapons. similar to how he was talking to Fischer in inception to convince him they were trying to help him etc.

I enjoyed Smallville for what it was and he was a good Lex but he's not right for MOS 2. We need a bigger actor and my choice is Ed Norton. [link]

No

As good as he was in the show, there is absolutely no way that this is happening because they want to continue to reinvent Superman. Bringing back someone who is pretty much only known for playing Lex Luthor on a popular teen TV show is a pretty horrendous idea, marketing and business wise. Nothing against Rosenbaum or his talent, it's just not going to happen and if he continues to tweet about it he'll just end up sounding desperate. Move on man.

Cranston and Strong would be good choices

It's not that hes a bad actor, its just that he's done it already in a different version of the superman world. It does not make any sense to have him reprise his role as lex in this new world that they've created. It wouldn't be a proper reboot, it should be a fresh take on lex. If it was a big screen extension of the smallville series then it would be cool but man of steel is new material. The same reason they didn't use the original superman theme in man of steel, it does not belong because

Just no, the first Man of Steel was bad enough, if they let this nobody play Luthor it would almost certainly guarantee the sequel to be even worse.

Oh really? The guy that is slightly famous for exactly one thing wants to do that thing again on a tentpole film with an enormous budget? That's weird. And he is willing to turn down all of the multi-million dollar, motion picture leading man roles Hollywood is tossing at him like panties at a Tom Jones concert? That's dedication.

Would love to see him as Lex again. He was on good on Smallville so I see no reason way he couldn't do it now. Kevin Spacey is a great actor and was horrible as Lex so it has nothing to do with an established actor. Rosenbaum can act though.

How about we spread the word to make sure this guy doesn't get the o

Lex Luthor needs to be played by an established actor, not some tv actor who couldn't really act his way out of a paper bag. Having this guy picked over Strong, Hardy, or Cranston would be a joke in itself.

Love Rosenbaum!!

He was brilliant in Smallville for sure, but I highly doubt they would they pick him for the new vision of the DC film universe. I reckon they would go for a slight re-imagining of the Lex as we know him, and wouldn't want to be tied down to a previous interpretation of the character I would be the first one to cheer if I saw him on the big screen though!

Why? When has Luthor been depicted as physically imposing? Granted I haven't read every issue of every comic Luthor has appeared in, but traditionally his greatest weapon is his mind. His body has little to do with it. What would it matter if he were at the peak of human physical fitness against Superman?

Lex is like the joker, he has been done in different ways. Most recently, even in the animated features he is imposing and in great shape but still human.

What I want to know is how do you make Lex Luthor the next movie's "big villain" after the first villain demolished Metropolis, nearly destroyed the world, and forced Superman to murder him? Yeah, *now* let's introduce Lex. Oh no a morally ambiguous rich guy! Scary!

That's like Nolan starting with Dark Knight Rises, and having the next movie be just the scarecrow subplot of Batman Begins.

Rosenbaum gave my favorite interpretation of Lex Luthor on screen, but I don't think we should mix universes and have the smallville cast on Man of Steel 2. And I feel like Strong and Cranston are just safe studio picks b/c they're bald and have played villains in the past. Give us an interesting casting choice like Shannon was for Zod.

NO!

Why can't some of you understand? This is a NEW superman universe, anyone who portrayed a main character in previous material should not be cast in this franchise. Its a reboot people, we need a new actor to portray Lex.

Why do people keep saying Cranston???

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but just because we've all seen him bald in something else before doesn't make him the best fit. He's a fantastic character actor, but he's blue collar through and through, you'd need someone to not only be a little imposing, but they also have to have that aire of high society. I guess it's against the character(but what isn't in these adaptations?) but I vote for someone european, maybe even someone like Mads Mikkelson(sp?) he certainly pulls off

Or since I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned since people here go crazy for him, but a bald Idris Elba speaking in a proper british accent could be cool

Lex Luthor

Someone older than Clark...fit,intelligent,businesslike, charismatic, looks good in suit and looks awesome being bald...JAson Statham could be but he doesn't do other accents other than his own

No thanks

If they start bringing Smallville actors into the Man of Steel universe, then they don't need to play the same character. If he gets Lex in MoS2, then my excitement for it just dropped about to half of what it was.

Strong.....

Strong was already a main villain in Green Lantern. Rosenbaum is amazing as Luthor.

Love Rosenbaum, he really made Lex his own on the show. John Glover was also excellent as his father Lionel - they made the Luthor relationship my favorite thing about Smallville. But it would be kinda weird to have the Smallville Lex play opposite anyone but Tom Welling. Then again it could be like Judi Dench returning as M for Casino Royale and beyond. Same actor, different version of the character. I'm torn on this at the moment...

I'm one of the biggest fan of Rosenbaum as Lex....

But having him in Mos 2 would be too confusing to the casual viewers for mixing the universes....Sorry Michael. I'm still on for Mark Strong.

Now, as Flash, thats a wickedly cool idea....

3rd place

if you put Rosenbaum in the running against Cranston and Strong, he comes up last place (though not a distant last place) in my book. He was really good in Smallville, but this is Metropolis, baby! The big time.

I think it would work

I only watched the first couple years of smallville but Michael's performance was definitely the best part of the show and the most interesting character. One of my favorite live action Luthers. I would be ok with him playing lex in the film.

I personally dont like the idea of Mark Strong. Are people only going with him because he has no hair (Yeh Thats a good reason). I think he would be a very poor choice for Lex Luthor if Im honest. Not that I was a fan of Man of Steel so I dont know why Im bothered. Maybe because I was quite passionate about the character and like Batman I dont believe any film has quite got it right yet. (Batman Begins and the first and Second Superman came the closest)

I like Mark Strong because he looks and has a deep voice like an evil asshole. Being bald helps.

Strong is a very capable actor. Plus, he doesn't get cast in so many villain roles by chance. Dude is intimidating as fuck when he wants to be. In fact, he is so good at playing evil that it is almost a cliche and may be working against him at this point.

His take on the character worked, worked very well even, in the context of Smallville - but far as keeping the universes separate go, I'd really like to see a different, probably more mature take on Lex.

He was easily the best part of Smallville and because of that I would definitely be fine with him playing Lex Luthor again on the big screen.

It would be awesome casting and I could possibly see Snyder having the confidence to do so. But if not him, then I do like the idea of Mark Strong or Jon Hamm. Save Cranston for Lieutenant Gordon for the new Batman films.

I'll be honest. If any Smallville actor deserves a shot at Man of Steel, Rosenbaum would be the one I'd choose. I'm mainly disappointed he hasn't really had much notable success post-Smallville. But really, I'd be happier if they kept things fresh, with a new actor and a new take.

Mark Strong is a fine choice, if they plan to disregard Martin Campbell's Green Lantern (all evidence points to that being a good idea). Cranston is only getting thrown around as a suggestion because of Walter

Nope, keep anything "Smallville" away from Man of Steel.
