Sony picks up Predestination starring Ethan Hawke as a time traveling government agent

Ethan Hawke plus chainThe last time Ethan Hawke teamed up with the Spierig Brothers things worked out pretty well (my loving review of DAYBREAKERS here), so why not go two for two with the newly acquired assistance of Sony Pictures?

PREDESTINATION is an original (ish, as you’ll see below) screenplay from the Spierig Brothers, in which Hawke would play “a temporal government agent sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to stop future killers.  Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must recruit his younger self while pursuing the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.”  So… is this sort of like LOOPER meets MINORITY REPORT?

Now at to why I said “original-ish” – according to the Spierig Brothers, “Predestination is based on the classic Robert A. Heinlein short story ‘All you Zombies.’ No, it’s not a Zombie flick but it’s one of our favorite short stories and is unlike anything you’ve ever read before… The short is on many sci-fi lists as one of the greatest short stories of all time, and the mother of all time paradox tales. Heinlein is considered one of the great science fiction masters alongside Phillip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke.”

Production aims to start towards the beginning of 2013 in Australia.
