Spidey on Spidey: Tobey Maguire interviews Andrew Garfield about The Amazing Spider-Man

May. 9, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Are we being incepted?

Nope. Tobey Maguire really did interview Andrew Garfield about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. They talked about more than that in an interview for VMan Magazine (heads up via GeekTyrant). If you want to read the whole thing, head here.

For now, enjoy this excerpt in which the two talk about the Spidey process then braid each others hair. It starts with Garfield asking sarcastically if he knows about the movie:

Tobey Maguire: I do know about it! actually, when it was coming together, I was particularly excited at two moments: one was when [director] Marc Webb got involved. I think he's an interesting and cool choice. and then I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker. When I heard it was you, I was literally like, Fucking perfect!

Andrew Garfield: Oh, man!

TM: I just want it to be great, and I thought, What a great actor andrew is, i'm glad that's what's happening here.

AG: That's so nice of you.

TM: What was the process? How did you end up being the guy?

AG: It was pretty basic, apart from it being more dragged out and pressure-filled and dra- matic than any other audition process I've ever been through. They like to put you through the ringer, in the respect that it creates drama and tension among a generation of actors.

TM: [Laughs]

AG: And they succeed every time, it seems. But, no, it was great. I'm friends with a few of the guys who were up for it, and I actually had dinner with Jamie [Bell] the night of my screen test and his screen test. We compared notes and war stories, and we kind of got past the ridiculousness of it all and thought it would be a nice idea to get everyone together and kind of interview each other about how messed up the process is, being against each other, and remember that we're all in it together, knowing that when you take off that bodysuit someone else is going to be stepping into your sweat immediately after. It's a weird kind of cattle call. But Marc [Webb] was great. He was very open and encouraging. You have the monitoring area with literally about 30 people judging you, looking at your face and whispering to each otherit's one of the most disconcerting and kind of humiliating things to go through, if you're aware of it, you know what I mean?

TM: Yeah, I completely understand. What kind of effect has this had on you?

AG: The main thing I'm thinking about and worrying about is what happens after this movie comes out. What was your experience when you became Spider-Man in people's eyes? I'm interested to hear what you have to say about the whole life change that it brings. Because right now I have a host of fears that I'm contending with on a minute-to-minute basis. I'm not in the reality of it yet, so I'm sure I'm imagining it will be much worse than it is. I admire you so much because you're an actor and that's all you've ever been and all you ever will be. It must be very hard to hold on to the simple fact of wanting to be an actor, to tell stories and not have your image become bigger than your art. Do you have a recollection of a definite change, or was it a seamless thing?

TM: I think our thing was a little bit different because movies hadn't been doing the sort of opening-weekend business that's fairly commoneven expectedtoday. The first Harry Potter came out about six months before us and it was this phenom- enon from Day one. it was so wild because it was a new thing at that momentand i'm not saying that hasn't happened in movie history, but at the time that was a big jump. and then that happened with us. People didn't anticipate [2002's Spider- Man] to be like that. Leading up to it you start to get reactions and people tell you, you know, what the tracking is and what range your opening weekend box office is likely to be. but for me it was kind of unexpected. So much shifted in my life the weekend the movie came out. it was shocking.

AG: Oh wow, that's crazy.

Extra Tidbit: I say they do another interview in the bathtub.

From that picture alone...

The looks, the atmosphare and the tone was so much better in Raimi's films. I mean, the guy wears a red & blue costume, why WON'T it'll be bright colorful & on your face?? And I maybe in the minority, but I really liked Tobey's Spidey...he might not be funny enough, but he was humble, vulnerable, emotional and so much likable as basically a kid overburdened with an inhuman responsibility. Garfield and TAS can be as good as they are saying, but in my opinion, no other new Spider-Man film can

P.S. So the new SpiderMan is working in nighttime, and from the looks of the trailers, Batman is chillin in daytime....What kind of Bizarro world is this?

I liked Tobey as Spidey at first, but over time I think Sam Raimi got kinda retarded with Peter Parker. Spidey wasn't witty nor funny enough, he was conflicted and kinda dopey. Garfield (from the trailers) seems to be less dopey and more sarcastic and true to the comic book. I think he'll do a good job. This re-boot may be a good thing, taking the character a little more genuine. By Spider-man 3 it seemed to me like nobody was taking it very seriously, they were all having fun and earning

It showed in the final product. Spider-man and Spider-man 2 were good.

Both are so cool with each other. Tobey is the man as spiderman, and excited to see what another actor can do with the same character.

The new suit looks so much cooler, the texture is fantastic. The old one was lumpy and those heavy golden fishnet things on top of it, plain ugly. Maguire's Parker was way too stolid and humourless. That they had the great Willem Dafoe covered up in metal kind of sums it up.

Cool interview idea

But dear God, does this new costume suck. That alone kills any interest I could ever have in this reboot (not to say I'd have any otherwise). Seriously, is there anyone who prefers this new costume? Look at the two side-by-side. The first one looks exactly like the comic, the new one doesn't, period. It's not even an opinion, it's fact.

I guess this reboot is so far off course to begin with, it's a good thing his costume looks so un-Spidey. That way, when Disney/Marvel finally buys

And which comic costume are you basing this fact on? There have been dozens of interpretations over the years; some similar to the original Ditko design, though most are complete departures.

Can you back this fact with proof?

You know damn-fucking-well Spider-man's costume has never EVER in the history of comics looked like this new one. Not even close.

[link]

What complete departures are YOU talking about? Show me! The symbiote? Iron-Spider? Or are you talking about different Spider-men all together? Ben Rielly? Miles Morales?

This new costume is red and blue, sure. But there are blues where there should be reds, and reds where there should be blues.

Like the films themselves, the Raimi costume

Like the films themselves, the Raimi costume wasn't perfect. The webbing was slightly grey, and the spider on his back resembled the chest one, when it should have been circular.

But this new costume, like the rest of the film, isn't improving anything, but merely CHANGING it, to the form of complete obscurity.

But that's alright, I guess they can sell twice as many action figures now. By all means, everybody go flock to see this abomination so Spider-man can be locked up at Sony for a couple more decades.

Wow so this disagreement is because of a difference in blue-to-red ratios and placement? Talk about minutiae.

The new costume overall is similar to the ultimate version, while the torso is close to the Spiderman India costume in it's use of the red and blue. Though it seems the red "happy trail" going to the waist is a little more narrow in the movie.

And departures? Every artist has changed something small every time the character was drawn and inked.

This link is just 30 of some

This link is just 30 of some arbitrarily picked "best of" and shows just how much it has changed over the years.

What are the offenses this costume has made? The texture? The size and shape of the spider? The hue or saturation of the colors? Anything?

All I'm saying is if you have a favorite suit that you are comparing this too that's fine. A bit hyperbolic but fine. But saying this interpretation isn't as valid as any of the the other interpretations floating out around out there is asinine.

I love the original Spider Man films and hoped to have the same crew back for SP4 and SP5, but I can give this film more of a chance since Tobey Maguire who I thought was perfect as Peter Parker/Spider Man gives it his blessing.

I'll be there opening night.

Good interview. While I like Garfield as an actor, putting those 2 spiderman pictures side by side up top makes me realize how much I like the Raimi vision compared to this new one.

I'm trying to keep an open mind but it seems like such a waste since they already had Tobey locked in for SM4. Trying to stay positive... Trying...
