Squak, squak! The Penguin and Alfred cast in Gotham TV show

02.11.2014

Fox's Gotham TV show continues to take shape as more castmembers have been added. Robert Lord Taylor will play Oswald Cobblepot/aka The Penguin, while veteran thesp Sean Pertwee (DOG SOLDIERS) will play Alfred Pennyworth, the longstanding butler to the Wayne family. Jeremy Irons was recently cast as Alfred in the next big screen iteration of the character for BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, but Pertwee will be playing a younger version of the character, as Gotham takes place in the years just after Bruce Wayne's parents are murdered.

Lord Taylor's Penguin is described as such:

With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney, and hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Pertwee's Alfred is described as:

Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler, will be played by Sean Pertwee. A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Pennyworth has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne — the boy who will eventually become Batman.

With the recent casting of Ben McKenzie as lead Detective James Gordon, the new comic-book themed show seems to be attuning itself closely to its comic book roots, complete with a long roster of known characters, a model which is followed on CW's Arrow and is only recently being followed by Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's a promising development for the show. I'll definitely be tuning in for the pilot.

Gotham is set to start shooting in March 2014 for a potential fall debut.

Alfred is the Third Doctor's son! Awesome. Robin Lord Taylor looks like a creepier Jonah Hill. And someone named Robin playing the Penguin gets bonus points.

Wonder who will be Catwoman. Also wonder what they're going for in terms of the look with costumes and all that.

You do know that Catwoman is closer to Batman's age, right? She should still be in her early teens.

I wanna see scrappy street urchin Selina. An episode or two could centre around her getting thrown into juvie hall and breaking out.

They're putting together one hell of a cast for this show. Love how Alfred and Cobblepot are described and the actors are spot on. Sarah Essen and Barabra Gordon (Jim's wife, not daughter with the same name) have also been cast according to Batman-News.com - Both good actresses and age appropriate for the roles, which gives me hope that this show won't be aimed exclusively at teenagers. If we get a smart, gritty Gotham TV series I'll be happy.

You know what?

the more I think of it, I'm really excited for this. I agree with the casting so far, and based on what they have done with Arrow, I think they may have something great here. I understand there are people who will make Smallvlle comparisons; say that we don't need/want a batman show without Batman...but here's the thing: This ISN'T a Batman show. It is a show that sets up Batman and his world, shown through the eyes of Gordon, and I'm kind of fascinated by that. I love Batman, but I know

It is a show that sets up Batman and his world, shown through the eyes of Gordon, and I'm kind of fascinated by that. I love Batman, but I know everything there is to know, EXCEPT the part between where an emotionally scarred child looks at his parent's graves and swears an oath to when he leaves as a young adult. We always see the man returning from abroad like in the seminal Year One...but what happened before? Why did Alfred choose to support it, and how did he? I want t see what Alfred teaches him over those years, as Gordon takes an interest in this young kid whose tragedy has become a symbol for the darkness in Gotham, and provides a new focus for his own war against it. I'm curious to see how the villains developed into who they are. I want to see the influences of the Court Of Owls...I want to see Gotham as a character, and I have a feeling that's what we are going to get.

YES

Ok, moving in the right direction. From how he looks and what I saw in that Walking Dead episode, the guy is perfect for Cobblepot. Sean Pertwee makes everything better, and is brilliant for this iteration of Alfred. Now, if they could just get Jason Isaacs for something...
