Stephen Sommers returning to direct G.I. Joe sequel?

Aug. 4, 2010by:

There was talk at one point last summer that director Stephen Sommers (VAN HELSING, THE MUMMY RETURNS) was kicked off G.I. JOE, reportedly having problems with the studio over the film. That was, however, quickly refuted by JOE producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. But even still, in the time since, there's been some doubt as to whether Sommers would return for the sequel.

But today, "an individual familiar with the project" has informed TheWrap that Sommers will indeed be returning for another go with Joe. And while we don't know anything about the film's story yet, we do know that ZOMBIELAND writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have turned in a draft that Paramount is happy with. As far as cast goes, only Channing Tatum (THE EAGLE, DEAR JOHN) is reportedly expected to reprise his role, though I suspect at least a few more will come along as development progresses.
Extra Tidbit: G.I. JOE earned over $300 million worldwide at the box office.

No, you know what? I grew up loving G.I. Joe, so don't tell me that the movie G.I. Joe is all I should ask for. My imagination was obviously much more vivid and grand and, well, just GOOD, than yours. The only silver lining is the faster they make a sequel, the faster they reboot the whole goddamn thing.

A sequel to the worst movie of the last ten years? Priceless.

Hmmmmmm.

... I expected a good movie. It seems there are two types of movie fans when it comes to these sorts of movies, movies based on some established pop-culture icon. The first type make the argument, "It's based on a toy. What do you expect?" As if that's an excuse for making a crappy movie! People who use this rationalization are exactly the audience that Hollywood makes these big-budget craptaculars for. Because they knew that they could literally take a G.I. People who use this rationalization are exactly the audience that Hollywood makes these big-budget craptaculars for. Because they knew that they could literally take a G.I. Joe action figure, crap on it, film the resulting mess, and people who say "What did you expect?" will still line up and throw money at them for it.

Then there are those of us who know that there are no bad stories, just bad storytellers. A filmmaker has a choice: He can show respect for his audience, or he can show contempt for his audience. There are an awful lot of working directors and screenwriters and actors who have nothing but the deepest contempt for the movie-going public, and frankly, it's a contempt that is well deserved, based, just for example, on the fact that "Transformers 2" made over $800 million worldwide. The question is never 'can this be made into a good movie'... because no matter what it is, it can. The question is whether it will be profitable to make a good movie... and the answer, sadly, is oftentimes 'no'. Because they know that they have a built-in audience that will excuse even the absolute worst films (and G.I. Joe was indeed one of the absolute worst of 2009) with a shrug: "What did you expect?"

And so it goes...

why all the hate ?

cool news... YEP I enjoyed the first one (maybe 'cause I wasn't expecting much, but still...).
I must say I don't get the whole lot of HATE Sommers gets around here... OK I've been disapointed by THE MUMMY RETURNS & VAN HELSING as much as the next guy, but for theire time, the first MUMMY, DEEP RISING and his JUNGLE BOOK where pretty good surprises

sorry for the double...

..post but look at that pic again! The actress that played cover girl is still trying to figure out why she fired a machine gun with her long blonde locks blocking her face. Not sorry for the double post. No seriously the picture tells it all. Look at 'em. Even Scrotum, I mean Tatum is in his own element but uncomfortable; he's watching photographer's fingers and the act to his left. :D Van Helsing, The Mummy..., look at that dude! Thanks Hollywood! Thank you M. Sommers for proving

Thank you M. Sommers for proving the % of Hollywood that is clueless actually views their job as actual work! If you live out west and function without being a catfish you truly are on another planet and that, in my book, is still an achievement. :D Did you tell your parents you wanted to work in space when you where five? Of course not, other things cemented you as an agent of satan.

Really wanted a different director

The first one definitely surprised me with how much I liked it, but Sommers is a horrible director. I was excited to hear that the Zombieland writers were penning the new script, I thought that was a good sign that they would also pick a better director. But perhaps with a much better script Sommers could actually pull it off again. I can't wait to see JGL fully unleashed as Cobra Commander. They better use the blue hood or the metal helmet! cuz he looked like crap in the first one!

WHYYYYYY....

I've come to grips that this franchise as well as Resident Evil will have to suffer the same fate as the Batman movies...We'll put up with Bat nipples for the meanwhile until someone fit for the job comes and does the franchise some justice ala Christopher Nolan...Because honestly it's not like GI Joe or Resident Evil are movies that can't be done right...We just have to put up with dip shit writers and directors who wouldn't know their ass from a hole in the wall...

I went in with low expectations, and was presently surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Sure there was room for improvement, but overall I thought it was a fun popcorn flick.

Wort Idea Ever!!!!!

No! Damnit! Damn you Sommers! You suck ass! He ruined the first one, and will just continue to rape my childhood. This is the man who wanted Snake Eyes to talk, and Hasbro had to shut him down. He doesn't understand the brand, he doesn't understand the fans, and he is basically a low grade, crappy version of Michael Bay, but with out the skill to make stuff cool. This property all ready needs a re-boot. Just make the Mass Device, and we will be cool. I hat you Sommers and everything

Uhh, you need to chill bro! It could be a lot worse, Uwe Boll for instance. Let's be realistic Micheal Bay!? Are you serious, lol. There are FAR more things wrong with Transformers than there was in G.I. Joe. hahaha, I can't even finish this thought, you are too funny man...

you don't need to chill bro. that movie was absolute crap. there is no reason to except it as popcorn fodder other than to extend a talkback. Baroness only mates with Destro. Duke and Scarlett with Snake-eyes chucked in due to make his origin more impactful, emotional and tragic. Crap folks I'm not the authority on GI Joe and I see this for what it is. Oh well.., denial, Lucas, denial, preguels, denial, lucas, ohh almond joy! Lucas, denial, prequels, joe sequels, denial, oh almond joy!

I thought the first one didn't have a script. It's a good thing they're using one for the 2nd movie.

Although I wanted the first one to be really good, it disappointed on so many levels one of them being Channing Tatum. I say pass and R.I.P. Joe.

This is awesome news. Loved the first one and made me feel young again. Sure it might have been cheesy, but it was a damn good time watching G.I. Joe. I really, really hope that the ENTIRE cast comes back for the sequel. If they didn't I think this sequel would feel a little "off". The ending was the perfect set up for a sequel for all the characters to return.

G.I. Joe was awful.. even for a campy summer blockbuster. The cast was a circle jerk of washed up/horrible actors with only JGL showing any kind of range. How we get sequels to shit like this I'll never know.

JGL was horrible in G.I. Joe. That movie and Inception are by far the two most recent low points of his career in terms of giving him material to work with where he can give a real performance. He's a very good actor though, especially in movies like 500 Days of Summer. And in the clip for Hesher it looks like he'll be giving another REAL JGL performance.

How is Inception a low point? Granted he didn't have the most screen time, but I thought he did great with what he was given. Inception is a huge success for him in his career. When he is the lead in his movies, like The Lookout, (500) Days of Summer, and Brick he is phenomenal.

Inception basically wasted his talents by giving him a one dimensional role that required nothing. The same goes for Ellen Page. So, while the movie might have been considered a success, in terms of quality material for them to work with that allowed them to give the kind of excellent performances we've seen in the past from them, this movie fell way short. Even a lot of the reviews that liked Inception admitted Ellen Page's character was poorly written and she basically just said

JGL was basically just there and didn't do much, he wasn't given a personality, any character development, or any good dialogue. He had a cool action scene though but that amounts to nothing when I didn't care about his character.

Leo was the only one that was written as a fully fleshed out, three dimensional, role. The rest where in the story but not nessary for the plot. The story was about Cobb, and if you thought anyone else should've been written better then you or wrong.

Yes! This is great news, they're actually doing a sequel! No prequel or reboot! I loved the first one, made me feel like I was watching the cartoon I loved as a kid. I'll definatly be seeing this. Hopefully they can get some more of the cast back, especially Rachel Nichols. She looked good as a rehead!

lets just go ahead and combine GI Joe 2 with Transformers 3 into one movie. I want to see Channin Tatum, Dennis Quaid, and Marlon Wayan working with Optimus, Ironhide, and Bumblebee.

I think the Razzies are absolute garbage for giving Sienna Miller the award for worst supporting actress in G.I. Joe. Even if anyone didn't like the movie, the concensus seemed to be she gave the best performance.
