Steven Soderbergh shares everything he watched and read in 2014

01.06.2015

steven soderbergh

Now this might be very specific, but if you’ve ever wondered what writer, director, editor, and probably a great cook Steven Soderbergh watched in a given year, it’s your lucky day. He has provided a list of all the things he watched and read in 2014. I can’t even make a grocery list let alone keep a record of everything I do in a year; I might actually have to try this with my new daily planner, once I find it.

You’ll notice he say GONE GIRL twice and if a fan of The Americans and Inside Amy Schumer because aren’t’ we all? He has checked out MAGIC MIKE XXL (which he’s the editor and cinematographer on) which I suspect was a rough cut. He didn’t see a lot of the bigger movies of last year, but considering I finally saw WHIPLASH and was absolutely floored, I’m curious as to what he thought about it. SS, if you’re reading this, can you add a rating or something for 2015? Thanks, man.

The list comes from Soderbergh’s official website which is worth checking out from time to time. What do you think of his viewing habits?

The man watches a LOT of tv shows. Would've been gravy if he added his ratings for the movies.
Perhaps, he exported his IMDb ratings list. I've been keeping track of all the films I've seen for 8 years now, very handy for us cinephiles.

I agree.
What is curious in that list, is that he does not Watch a lot of movies : I counted 102 movies, which is not much for a director (in 2014 I watched precisely 260 movies)
I track my movies on imdb too...
Just curious : how man movies have you seen ?????

ah, I forgot : on all his movies he saw in 2014, I bet some of them he already saw them : Jaws, the godfather...
very odd that a director do not Watch that much movies... but, maybe it is because he is a director then he do not Watch a ton of movies (annoyed about movies industry etc etc...)

Indeed, I was also surprised at his tv shows/films ratio. I think you're right about why: he's stated his discontent with the current state of the (US) film industry many times and how he prefers tv shows over films nowadays.
I've had a look at my ratings list for you, in the past 12 months I've seen 303 films, and currently I've rated 3940 titles (though I'd say there's 1 or 200 missing from before I started voting). These include only a few dozen short films, and no tv shows at all, I try to

wow ! you are a great cinephile ! Congratulations !
I am exactly at 3 257 movies watched in my life. Of course, like you, I must have forgotten a few movies (hard to say how many). I only count feature films (no shorts) and to be very honest, I never watch tv series because I want to judge a work right after I have watched it, and because I do not like tv series.
Thank you for you response and continue to enjoy watching movies ! (right before writing those words, I watched " fire on the

Klute is a great movie. Watched it about a month ago and it still holds up pretty well. 05/16 is The Day of the Jackal - in cap but not bold - I haven't heard of the series so I assume it's the 1973 movie by Fred Zinnemann - a really great movie and the best by Edward Fox.

He has great taste on movies, no wonder he's such a talented director... He has seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" three times during last year and I don't blame him - that's a kind of movie I could watch every single month. He doesn't watch a lot of movies per year I guess - what he's seen during one year I wach in just one month but he watches a lot of TV-Series. But hasn't finished T.D. yet (surprised - not the kind of show to quit at fifth episode)
