Sylvester Stallone says The Expendables 3 will be PG-13

05.19.2014by:

The cast of THE EXPENDABLES 3 invaded the Cannes Film Festival this weekend with tanks (no, seriously) to help promote their upcoming movie, and while taking part in the stunt, Sylvester Stallone revealed the new film will be rated PG-13. Stallone originally wanted the second EXPENDABLES movie to be PG-13, but changed his mind after the huge negative reaction from fans.

So why will THE EXPENDABLES 3 be rated PG-13? Stallone says he wants to reach a younger audience with the third movie.

We want to reach as many people as possible. Its very close to an R, believe me, its right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought wed join that club for a while.

With recent R-rated projects from a few of the EXPENDABLES stars underperforming at the box office (ESCAPE PLAN, THE LAST STAND, BULLET TO THE HEAD, HOMEFRONT), I'm not surprised THE EXPENDABLES 3 will be rated PG-13, just a little disappointed. However, a PG-13 rating doesn't instantly mean the movie will be terrible, or not as good as the previous films in the series.

Sylvester Stallone also says there will be more drama and less comedy in THE EXPENDABLES 3.

With the first one, I didnt know which direction to go. It was experimental, more dramatic and heavier. In the second one, I think we went too far in the comedy and one liners. (For the third film) I realized we should get back to being more dramatic. When men and women know each other, theres a kind of human comedy, not jokes, but when the action starts I dont like to do jokes. So, I believe we finally got it right on the third one. Its kind of like marriage.

Some of you probably aren't too happy THE EXPENDABLES 3 will be rated PG-13, but if Sylvester Stallone thinks it's close to a R-rating, I don't think the film would really be that different compared to a higher rated version, and THE EXPENDABLES 3 will also likely get an unrated Blu-ray and DVD release anyway. I am very glad THE EXPENDABLES 3 won't have as many jokes as the last movie though, and even with a PG-13 rating I think it'll be a very fun movie to check out.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 will be in theaters August 15th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: How well do you think THE EXPENDABLES 3 will do at the box office?

I don't think that these over the hill actions stars of yesteryears have any real draw, even from their fans. No one wants to go see their favorite rock band from the 1970's play a concert and have to come out with walkers and IV bags. The only draw that these guys can do is with a movie like The Expendables. A movie that has tons of the old stars sharing the screen. The problem with the other two films and I can guess the pg-13 sequel is that it kind of pisses in the face of what was a huge component of those old action movies; lots of gore and practical effects. This series loses a lot from having neither of these things. As far as bringing in a younger crowd; what the fuck for? No person born after 1999 will give a shit about seeing a geriatric ensemble flick and these movies aren't good enough to make the younger crowd fans of any of these has beens, with maybe the exception of Statham who is the younger of there group and still pumps out multiple movies every year. Making a pg-13 flick like this is only going to alienate their fanbase further.

What does age have to do with it? Yeah Stallone uses a Walker and has an IV bag. It's never about substance...it's always age, the number of installments in a series, how hot a guys/girls are, etc...it makes no sense. They also are far from has-beens. I swear all I hear is the same regurgitated drivel over and over with no real thought or rationale behind any of it.

I hear a lot of talk from fans but no action. I saw last stand and bullet to the head and escape plan in the theatre (sabotage didn't even come out near me) and there was NO ONE in the theatre. So everyone is all disappointed that its not R, well you can thank yourselves or the other "fans" who didn't support any of the other action films.
Now they have to broaden the audience by making it PG-13 and thus sucking some of the coolness out.

Doesn't even matter

Expendables II was a PG13 movie with a little added CGI blood to give it an R rating. This will be the same thing except with just a little less CGI blood......so who even cares? The blood doesn't make or break a movie like this.....the stars and the action does. I'm in.

Something else to keep in mind...

To those getting all bent out of shape... Remember that two years ago almost exactly, it was April or May, Stallone said, or allegedly said, the exact same thing. No joke. And then what happened? It was rated R after all. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this changes in a couple months. Like I said earlier, I judge films qualitatively, not based on what they are rated so for me, PG-13 or R, I will be there opening day.

You 'owe it' to the next generation? Come on Stallone. What about the generation that supported your career in the first place? Was that not the point of 'The Expendables' in the first place?

I mean, it could still be good. But that comment about the next generation was just plain dumb.

Hey Stallone, you want to "touch every age bracket?" We'll guess what 13 year olds get into R rated films. Ratings don't mean shit when going to a theater. I was 12 getting into r rated films early 90's. And now ppl can buy tickets right from a machine or online, so who or what theater is policing the sale of R rated movie tickets to ppl under 17?...... NOBODY!!!!! THATS WHO! Jump on the fucking clue bus Stallone! Cuz it's leaving without you!

To all the dissapointed fans...

Is it really going to be that much different? Think about it. The previous movies were barely R material. It really annoyed me that they went for an R but it was so soft. CG blood and no adult language or female nudity. The first one at least had 2 scenes that used the CG blood quite nicely but the rest and especially the second movie was so tame that it was NOTHING like the hard-R movies of old, that they were supposedly paying homage to but ended up spoofing.
It was clear that even from

It was clear that even from part one they were always undecided on whether to do R or PG-13 so they went for CG and tame to leave some room for last minute decisions. Since the last one didn't do as well as expected, this time they went for PG-13 but other than the sporadic CG blood there will be NO difference,

Stallone, that club sucks!

Stallone! This so called "PG-13 club", which I am assuming is a club made up of preppy young kids who are still attached to their mothers by the umbilical cord, fucking SUCKS!
I don't want another repeat of Live Free Or Die Hard. I can't even get the R-rated version in blu ray HD format!
Hasn't Hollywood history taught these idiots anything? Having a PG-13, or worse a PG sequel, to a R-rated film is not a good sign!

I'm one of the few people who have absolutely no problem with this. I love action movies. I do not love blood and gore. I mean what kind of screw would have to be loose in a person's mind that they would enjoy a movie more because they get to see characters' brains splattered and intestines ripped out and heads cut off? Not to get too preachy but what does that say about a person who finds that kind of thing entertaining? I like my action loud, intense and over the top which Live Free Or Die

I like my action loud, intense and over the top which Live Free Or Die Hard proved can be accomplished in a PG13 world. If you're a fan of the Expendables films you should be glad this PG13 rating will allow as many people as possible to see it and enjoy it with you. Good stunts, grand set pieces, expert choreography and most importantly good writing make a solid action film-not blood and guts. Unfortunately, at least for me, the first two Expendables lacked in all those aforementioned areas, but I have high hopes for this this third one.

Jhowington32...Nobody has a problem with the Gore. Nobody is trying to say that you cannot have an opinion. The point here is that the threshold for violence has changed substantially. If you actually go back and watch a lot of those old films from the 80s, you will find that yes they are violent but not as hard-core as some of the R-rated movies today. Therefore it is safe to say that a lot of them, not all of them but a lot, might not actually be rated R if made that exact same way today. I

Sylvester Stallone on the The Expendables 3 being PG-13: We want to reach as many people as possible. Its very close to an R, believe me, its right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought wed join that club for a while.
No Sly you don't owe the new Gen shit; they weren't around during your hey-days hence didn't back you up then and haven't supported your new movies as per their box office results. Old school a-holes like me have. You owe it to the older generation

Many said below that it doesn't really matter what the rating is as long as the story and characters are first and foremost. I agree to a point, but there's just something about watching a hard-core violent R movie. I don't really expect a spectacular story or developed characters in terms of the Expendables, that is not why I'm going to see this movie. I'm going to see 1.5 hrs of old school action with a few funny one-liners. I thought that was the point of this franchise.

We already know these characters, they're fucking icons for the most part. If they want to reach a younger generation, then why put all these 80's and 90's action heroes in the film to begin with?? If that's your goal then just recast with a Who's Hot in Hollywood and start an Expendables for the next gen that way, don't take away from the fans that have been with you for the last 20 years!!

Something about wanting a part in the movie, it's like how so your character bit the dust two movies ago...

No... Actually it's not good for the box office! Kids won't go see this film. And even if they do see this film they'd still get into a theater to see an R rated film no matter how old they r! Theaters want yer $ they don't give a fuck how old you are. If this is pg-13 it's destined to lose a lot of they're loyal fan base.

Since this sounds like a management move just to attract a demographic that has no interest. It's a betrayal to loyal fans.

I'll just use my ticket money to buy the Raid 2. Also notice how TV pushes the envelopeore then movies? Pathetic.

To those who say Cobra or Commando would be a PG-13 today, you really need to re-watch them and stop thinking like concerned parents or suits.

How about you stop being passive aggressive and simply address me? I'm the only one who said that here. I am a diehard fan who grew up with all of the old-school action movies. Aside from a couple of two second flashes of blood or gore, those movies were not violent enough to merit an R rating in today's world. Not even first blood would be rated R today except for the constant language. It is an observation of the fact that times have changed and once again the threshold has expanded. It has

However it does not change the fact that anybody who decides to not see a movie simply because of a goddamn rating is beyond juvenile. Shit, despite the fact that Rocky Balboa is the best of the sequels in the Rocky franchise, maybe I should have thrown a fit and dismissed that because it wasn't rated PG-13 like Rocky V. Seriously, grow the hell up.

Same thing happened on the second film.

Then the fans threw a hissy fit so they went back, added CGI blood squibs and a couple F-bombs, and people were happy. But the second film was still shot as a PG-13, and guess what? It got better reviews than EX1. The simple fact is that R-rated movies are hard to make franchises out of much of the time, and the last movie had a significant drop in its domestic performance. An R-rating probably would have killed this one, but now they have a chance of recouping the budget and you know what? Die

The ratings mean nothing unless you're literally only looking forward to ultra-violence and swearing and if that's the case, grow up. I say this as a huge fan of the old macho man '80s R-rated action movies, I'm a big sucker for those old Arnie movies like Predator, but I think if they came back and made a Predator 4 with Arnold I wouldn't even really care what the rating was, because nowadays, they can get away with a lot in a PG-13 and I'm always more interested in the overall QUALITY of the film rather than what it's rated.

The 1st 3 terminator films were R and did great! The first 3 die hard films were R and did great. Then they put out the pg-13 versions and not only did awful at the box office but they were awful films. Oh yea Rambo franchise were all R rated and did very well! I'm sure if I thought about it I could come up with more to prove you wrong, but I think those examples r more than enough to do so.

Don't actually care if it's PG-13 or R. I'm just glad to see my favorite action stars all in one movie.

Um...ok.

I'm going to hold off on this being a good or bad idea...it's bad because they're moving away from their core audience, but they might be able to get some younger viewers, which means more mooha.

Personally, I'm a fan of R rated movies, not the pg 13 crowd where humor, violence, sex, etc are watered down or non-existent.

Despite the mouthy loose cannon Mel Gibson being in the film, there is Ford and Snipes playing off all the 'regulars.'

In regards to the rating? I don't care. I'm more worried about the story...and if it'll give me characters I can latch onto.

I'm going to judge the movie on it's artistic and qualitative merits, not on the rating. To do the latter is really about as shallow as a teenager who won't buy an album because it doesn't have a parental advisory sticker on it.

Then you are not a fan of the expendables franchise or Sylvester Stallone. Period.

Smart move. With some fresh faces and that PG 13 rating they try to lure the young ones into it. It works for the Fast & Furious franchise so why not?

I'm honestly not too bothered. I don't think the rating will make or break this; it's not the most important thing by far. This isn't a horror franchise where the graphic violence matters. Were most 80s action films R-rated? Sure, but hopefully this can still function as an homage to those films without all the blood and swearing (granted, blood, swearing and, well, boobs wouldn't hurt). Sabotage was a hard R and I really didn't like it; it felt like the audience was being pummelled into

Exactly! People have to take into account the threshold for the R rating has changed substantially. What was R in the 80s wouldn't necessarily be so today. Aside from the F bombs, the violence in say Cobra or Commando wouldn't necessarily merit an R rating in today's world.

Agreed on both counts. For my part, a good movie is a good movie whether it's R or PG-13. It's not a deal breaker.

Let me ask you a question. Have you ever lost your temper and called a woman a bitch? That is basically rhetorical, because every human being, more specifically every man, has at one time or another. Does that mean that you are sexist? Are you a misogynist? Seriously get off of his ass already.

Gibson might have influenced the rating too. Supposedly, Chuck Norris wanted Ex2 PG-13. The article above claims that Stallone did. Gibson and Norris are both social conservatives (Gibson for religious reasons).
