The 20 greatest long takes in movie history?

02.02.2010
Website GeekWeek has recently compiled a Top 20 list of the greatest "extended/long takes" in the history of motion pictures. You know the kind of shots - the ones with no cuts whatsoever, like the incredible car sequence in CHILDREN OF MEN (which I've embedded below) to name a perfect recent example.

Did any of your faves make the list? Head on over to GeekWeek and find out!
Extra Tidbit: GeekWeek lists Alfred Hitchcock's ROPE (one of my favorites of his due its sheer audacity) which is shot almost like a stage play, featuring only ten cuts throughout the entire film.

Waiting...

Had a great extended take that moved throughout the restaurant during the dinner rush. It showcased the main characters' personalities as well as the stresses of a dinner rush perfectly.

No love for Bruce Campbell in Running Time. I haven't seen it in a couple years, but that had some long shots in it. A lot of cleverly hidden cuts, but also lots of long shots.

There is a good one in Casino that wasnt mentioned, as well as one in the opening of The Barbarian Invasions if I remember and its prequel Decline of the American Empire.

Entertaining list

I was glad to see the Tony Jaa scene in there. But I was really hoping to see the scene from Atonement on the beach when the British troops are withdrawing. Epic, greatly shot, even better score. That Oldboy scene cracks me up every time.

No Ghostbusters?

I think I remember Ivan Reitman saying in the commentary that the party scene at Rick Moranis' was just one long improv scene

Oh okay. I just remembered the camera following him throughout the entire shot. It's been awhile since I saw the movie, so I thought it was a continuous shot.

You guys are a bunch of whiney babies who can't read. Quoted from the article:
"I intentionally did not make reference to movies like TIMECODE, RUSSIAN ARK , PVC-1 , and NOKTA which are products of the digital filmmaking age, features entirely shot in a single take. I believe those movies are a genre in and of themselves and deserve a separate discussion."

And "Breaking News" and "The Protector" are numbers 6 and 5, respectively.

Jeeze....

Good stuff indeed.

There are two things I can think off not on there.

A movie called "Russian Ark", that is one lone 96min long steadycam shot.

And new one, not released (so not shocking it's not on there) called... damn it, can't remember. It was an AITH story a week or so ago, so obviously a horror flick. Looked interesting tho.

See THIS to me is great filmmaking. Any asshat (I'm looking at you Greengrass), can film from 100 different angles, shaking the camera, and using an epileptic monkey to edit,

Breaking News and The Protector deserve to be on the list, especially The Protector. The fight was exhilarating!

The opening of Firefly is actually two shots. Therefore, does not qualify.

Yeahh. I don't know why there's a lot of hate for Snake Eyes but the movie was entertaining and I really like the long-take opening of the movie.

I was wondering this and Strange Days too, but turns out they're both several shots edited together with whip pans. Clever bastards.
