It’s easy to pick on BATTLESHIP. It’s a movie based off of a board game, which is a pretty ridiculous place to start. But great movies have come from ridiculous places before so that can’t be your entire argument. BATTLESHIP however is saddled with a ridiculous script for a ridiculous concept and that’s where we get into trouble.
I’ll give it this much: this first trailer for BATTLESHIP looks purty. It’s got Brooklyn Decker in a bikini and lots of crisp, Michael Bay-style shots of the water, naval vessels and giant f*cking alien ships. It looks a lot like SAILORS & ALIENS actually.
But looking good is only going to get BATTLESHIP so far. It’s amazing how faithful the script is to the game, which is a stupid thing to say considering how basic the board game is, but it’s true. You even get a glimpse of the P.E.G. missiles (yes, pegs…) that are used to take down the opposing ships. They line up against each other, can’t see each other and launch pegs to try and sink the other ships.
As I said earlier, it’s easy to pick on BATTLESHIP but who knows, maybe it’s not as bad as I’ve read. What do you think?
