The official synopsis for Pixar's Monsters Inc. sequel Monsters University

05.12.2011

We're getting a prequel to Pixar's endlessly delightful MONSTERS, INC. Granted, we're getting it later than we initially expected -- Mike and Sulley got kicked from the November 2012 release date that was first announced, all the way back to June 21st, 2013.

But we know what those scream leaders will be up to in their early days, thanks to the movie's synopsis (which confirms previous reports):

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Original voice actors John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi are all heading back to school, and the movie will be directed by Dan Scanlon, who worked on the CARS short "Mater and the Ghostlight".

Extra Tidbit: Anyone else still hoping we'll get to see what grown-up Boo is up to? (And I don't mean that in the creepy voyeur pedo way.)

Well, that's better

When I heard talks of a sequel way back I was disappointed, because it was such a well contained story. The universe was relieved of it's problem and it just had that perfect ending. To hear it will be a prequel makes me less hesitant and more willing to support the project. We'll have to see the trailers before making any further speculation, but I think this is a better idea. I agree with (nearly) everyone about the incredibles though. Why not a superhero family movie trilogy, right? or

Tidbit...

No. I like the way the original ends. Seeing Boo again would be a damp squib and ruin the pathos originally created...

Monster's Inc was a well-contained one off story that doesn't need any more development. We don't need to know how they met, and we definitely don't need to know anything beyond that flawless ending shot. I have faith that it'll probably be decent, but it is completely unnecessary. Why did they cancel Newt again?

Also, I will never get the outpouring of love towards The Incredibles. That was definitely one of their weakest movies.

I kinda hope to watch this as a cross between Monsters, Inc. and Animal House, haha.

This sounds like a Pixar short and the fact they got a short director directing, doesnt help

although i love the original and can't wait for this tale to be spun, the one i was really koping to see a sequel to is Incredibles.
And i should say that while i enjoy all the pixar films the only the least favorite and one i'm sad already has a sequel is cars. honestly never connected with that film just felt a little blah. Owen Wilson I guess is not much of a lead person for me. oh well here's hoping for Incredibles 2: Enter The Master

To everyone whining about how Pixar isn't being original. Look at Toy Story 3. With that came the biggest box office ever for an animated film, along with a nomination for Best Picture. Not saying the same will happen for this, but what will happen is even though its not original, it will still be a great movie.

I truly wish they would have gone with a sequel, see no need for a prequel movie. Was really looking forward to a story involing an older Boo and seeing how that turned out but oh well I guess we'll have to wait another several years for that one.

Never fell for Sequels? What were Toy Story 2 and 3? I am a little skeptical about Cars because I think it's their weakest movie to date, but Monsters Inc was one of their strongest, although a Prequel isn't what I would've gone with. I would've gone with a sequel. We will see!

I hate to judge a movie before I've seen it, expecially before its made; but this and Cars 2 just don't sound like the best ideas I've ever heard come out of Pixar. Now when is Kung Fu Panda 2 coming out cause I can't wait!

Unoriginal

Haven't I seen this routine many times before? Enemies turned friends in a prequel blah blah...

But anyways, this sequel just seems sort of unnecessary and I don't see how a prequel would help give a greater impact to the first one at all. I'd much rather see a sequel to one of my most favourite Pixar films

I believe in Pixar BUT

I believed Pixar had the right formula because it never fell for sequelitis. Then came Cars 2, now Monsters University? I was more of a fan of Monsters Inc. than Cars, but still, Pixar's all about coming up with NEW ideas! I'd like to see the trailer first, but yeah, this is disappointing.
