The Oscar winners!!

02.23.2009

We'll be posting the full list of everyone's scores in our OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST later today or Tuesday at the latest, but this year's scores were a LOT higher than in previous years with the person in 1st place scoring 95/100 and the person in 2nd place scoring 93/100. In fact, even our own internal JoBlo.com staff prediction contest featured two people with scores over 90! Wow. I only scored 62/100 myself.

In terms of the Oscars themselves, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE dominated with 8 wins including BEST PICTURE and BEST DIRECTOR, while THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON continued its trend of receiving a lot of nominations, but very few wins during this past award season (it was nominated for 13 Oscars, but only won 3 technical ones). DOUBT & FROST/NIXON also had 5 noms each, but won a total of zero. The biggest surprise for me (and everyone else, I think) was Sean Penn's win over Mickey Rourke, although kudos to Penn for propping Rourke at the end of his speech. And my personal favorite moment of the night was Ben Stiller's Joaquin Phoenix impression. Classic shit!

Damn it!

I scored a 91 on the ballot!! I shouldn't have second guess those damn sound categories! Haha, oh well.

Overall I was generally pleased with the winners. Much better show this year, too.

I'm not saying Sean Penn is a bad actor or anything, but here's the thing I don't like about him. Practically every performance of his screams "I'M A GOOD ACTOR!!!! AHHH!!!! WATCH ME ACT!!!!" and it really bugs me. Especially that he won, because look at his MILK performance ("WATCH ME ACT!!") and then look at Mickey Rourke's subtle and honest performance in THE WRESTLER. Rourke deserved that Oscar more than Penn did.

Decent.

Blackestnight, the effects in Iron Man are nothing new. VERY impressive to say the least, but the Button effects were FAR more technically challenging and required insane attention to detail. All the Iron Man effects have been done about a million times before. The effects in TDK were better than Iron Man...because they had to be done in Imax and that again requires insane attention to detail.

Pretty good oscar show minus Hugh Jackman. What the FUCK were they thinking???

Sean Penn

Sean Penn shouldn't have won. I've seen Milk, Frost/Nixon, and Wrestler and both Mickey's and Frank's performances were FAR more captivating that Penn's. Glad he gave Mickey a shout out in his speech.

YAY for Kate Winslet finally winning!! The movie itself was decent, but Winslet's performance was nothing short of glorious. (When is she NOT glorious?)

Slumdog Millionaire was a beautiful movie, so a huge congrats to Danny Boyle and everyone involved in that film.

The biggest surprise for me was Penelope Cruz' win. She was absolutely fantastic in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. And I have yet to see Milk, but a lot of my friends have been talking about it.

I think there were some good wins

I haven't seen Milk yet, but if anyone's gonna be Rourke, I'm glad it was Penn. They kinda remind me of each other in their careers (at least in the '80s) and both being a couple of Irish guys with few illusions about their craft. That Rourke got nominated and then even got a shout-out from Penn is enough in my book to cement his comeback.

But hey, since I expected Benjamin Button to win big for technical awards, I ain't too disappointed for it. Visuals and make-up were pretty

Bar none, HELLBOY 2 deserved the Oscar for best VFX moreso than BENJAMIN BUTTON. True, HELLBOY 2 looked like PAN'S LABYRINTH (which won Best Makeup, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction a couple years back), but dammit, BENJAMIN BUTTON was overrated!

IT'S BILL MURRAY ALL OVER AGAIN

When will Sean Penn stop getting oscars because honestly... his portrayal in Milk was good but not great. Mickey Rourke DESERVED that oscar. He is not a great actor BUT his performance in that movie was amazing and LIKE Bill Murray.. chanaces are... he won't get another oscar nomination for a long time...It's upsetting to thing that Sean Penn with a mediocre performance gets his what 3rd Oscar... when a man deserving of it... doesn't even have the chance... EVEN JENKINS deserved that oscar more

Penn Over Rourke!?

Yes, that shocked me as well. Although Penn is quite excellent in "Milk", so I wouldn't say Rourke was robbed... but I was pulling for Mickey.

Best Director

I wanted Fincher to win, so when Danny Boyle got best director, I just imagined he was accepting it for 28 Days Later.

????

This is undoubtedly the most bizarre Oscar winners list ever. I'm happy about Boyle, Winslet, Ledger and Penn. But seriously??? is the Oscar panel on crack?
