The UnPopular Opinion: Top 5 Overrated Movies of 2015

12.23.2015

Check out the Top 5 Underrated Movies of 2015 HERE

Well Schmoes, as 2015 draws to a close we reflect on a year of ups and downs at the movies, both critically and financially. There were some surprises in regards to which highly anticipated movies lived up to their trailers and marketing as well as some dark horses that came out of nowhere to really steal the show. But, if there is one thing for certain, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike.

As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest to goodness perspective of the movies of 2015. If you disagree with any of the choices, please voice your own opinion in the talkback below. After all, the only opinion that really matters is yours, I am just here to share mine.

#5 - THE WALK

Robert Zemeckis has become quite the wizard at utilizing 3D and special effects to drive stories home. While his motion capture phase may have given him too much reliance on the use of 3D, he seemed to bounce back with the excellent FLIGHT. But, THE WALK falls into the same hole as THE POLAR EXPRESS and BEOWULF in that it feels more gimmicky than cinematic. The astounding tale of Phillipe Petit's walk between the World Trade Center towers was already told masterfully in the documentary MAN ON WIRE which essentially makes this movie pointless. For as good as Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in the lead role, the rest of the movie feels like it exists only to showcase the final walk in spectacular 3D, an effect that renders the film impotent when viewed in 2D.

#4 - STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

The real impact of NWA on the music industry was a game-changer that brought hip-hop and rap into the mainstream. It is a shame that the film that tells their story is as mainstream as it gets. Musicians have always made great subject for biopics, but F. Gary Gray's movie feels as formulaic and generic as RAY and WALK THE LINE. There is a lot missing from this story that leaves out the rags part of this rags-to-riches story. There really is a lot missing from this story that focuses too much on the music and not enough on the men behind the music. For a movie that runs well over two hours, this feels simultaneously too long and short on material.

#3 - EX MACHINA

Alex Garland's science fiction thriller has been lauded as one of the smartest films of the year. While the performances from Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac are quite enthralling, the film hinges on Domhnall Gleeson as our entry into this world. Gleeson isn't given too much logical to do and there are a few red herrings that should lead us to a stunning and frightening final act. Instead, the film becomes very predictable and weakens the strong first half of the film. Garland shows great promise as a director but it copmes at the cost of having his duties split between writing and helming duties.

#2 - BRIDGE OF SPIES

Steven Spielberg was away from the director's chair for three years before directing BRIDGE OF SPIES and it feels more like a warm-up for his next films. Knocking the rust off, this movie feels very safe compared to other Spielberg historical films. As entertaining as the pairing of Tom Hanks and Spielberg has been in the past, this doesn't really feature the best work from either of them. Mark Charman's screenplay was co-credited with Joel and Ethan Coen, whose voices are barely heard outside of the negotiation scenes which are the best part of the film. If this was helmed by anyone but Spielberg, it would have faded from memory more quickly than it did.

#1 - BLACK MASS

Lauded as Johnny Depp's comeback performance, BLACK MASS is bound to be one of those movies everyone talks about as being a good movie despite them not seeing anything more than the trailer. The movie is more about Joel Edgerton's character with Depp serving in a supporting capacity. When he is on screen, he soon devolves into what seems to be a caricature rather than a character. The ensemble cast is great overall but as you reach the end of the movie, it feels as if nothing really has happened. The movie just flows as a string of scenes and conversations that do not amount to a coherent film. Depp is good but not that good.

if anything

ex machina deserves more recognition for being such a story 'n character driven piece of sci-fi that didn't rely on spectacle or any big showdowns

Careful Des1

Careful des1....thumbing down everyone who doesn't agree with you and leaving an insulting comment won't make you any cooler. on behalf of everyone please buy a sports car, tell your dad your gay, or where boots to make yourself taller, or whatever makes you such a miserable person with nothing better to do. god bless your short gay little heart

I didn't thumb you down, knucklehead.

But it's good to know that people like you are so desperately fragile that someone giving you a thumbs down is so tragic to you that you create a separate post just to accuse someone of doing it and prove you're a homophobe.

Johngotti is is definitely YOU that should should be careful! As negative as Des1 is, at least he isn't some homophobic piece of shit trying to insult people by calling them gay. Your small little ignorant mind is one of the biggest problems in society today. I'd rather rather listen to a negative person than an ignorant homophobe with bad grammar (wear boots, not where). Grow up little boy.

Black Mass at #1 is baffling

It got [link] reviews (76% on RT isn't anything to write home about) and it fizzled out at the box office coupled with a mediocre CinemaScore. It was a film that was hyped up prior to release and then, for most audiences, didn't live up to its potential. Depp was even bypassed for many awards so far and is unlikely to land a Best Actor nom. To each his own I guess...

The Force Awakens should be on this list. When the movie ended, I felt like a just watched a remake of A New Hope. And I can't point a single improvement over the original. Ex Machina for my money is a much better movie, despite the predictable ending. The dancing scene was funny and haunting as we realize the truth compared to when Han and Chewie board the Falcon and you can almost see the "applause" sign in the corner. And anyone that has to mention consensus as a weighing factor has no clue

When the majority claim its good, that does not mean it's great, just as if no one went to see it, that means it's bad.

Star Wars 7 and Ex Machina, despite being in the same genre, are not really comparable at all. Being Sci-fi is where their similarities end.

I'm not sure what relevance has them being similar or not. I'm stating that for my money Ex Machina is a better movie than SW7. I believe that the success of TFA is more nostalgia than merit. When both movies are over, one movie makes you think about the movie you just saw (just as A New Hope did) and the other movie really doesn't work unless sequels are coming. I prefer movies that stand on their own and not 2 hour trailers for the next cash grab sequel.

Trainwreck gets my vote. Random cameos and pop culture references do not a good comedy make. Apatow is washed up.

Man On Wire and The Walk are two different movies. Wire was an in depth retelling of how all the caper came into being and was pulled off, while Walk was clearly a love letter to the city of New York that once was and won't be again. If you can't tell the difference, then you need to start looking for another job that doesn't involve reviewing film.

Got an idea for you...

Maybe someone could do a top five overrated/over-hyped trailers list for this site because I would most certainly put the Hateful Eight on that list. The movie looks like a weak-ass, small-scope, leftover idea for a period piece inspired from the Django Unchained shoot. While reducing the scope of a film can work in your favor, this just feels unimportant and like a rehashed version of Reservoir Dogs in the old west. All these great actors and I couldn't care less about their predicament.

This is coming from someone who really enjoyed Ex Machina, but...

Is it bad that I can understand someone thinking that the film is overrated? Despite liking it, it is true that you can kind of see where it's going well before it gets there. Didn't see the others on the list because none of their subjects even remotely interested me. The trailer for Bridge of Spies totally had that "shaking the rust off" vibe going for Spielberg.

Ex Machina was enjoyable, but definitely over-rated. I was fascinated by the slow reveal throughout and all the actors did a fine job, but I have zero desire to ever see it again. There was nothing "smart" about it. The rich guy convinced a geek to fall in love with his sex bot, then the sex bot rebelled. It couldn't have been more predictable if it tried.

No,, just no. And 'Compton' had flaws (no Dee Barnes incident?) but still stands as one of the better music bios of the last two decades because it WASN'T formulaic.

I'm sorry but the most overrated movie of 2015 was without a doubt Jurassic World. Way too many, "Hey, remember this??? Wink wink" moments in a movie that felt totally empty to me. How in the hell it was as successful as it was is beyond me.

I would have to agree with you. When it comes to well received movies this year, Jurassic World was the only one that had me scratching my head after. The kids were annoying, Bryce Dallas Howard was worse, a mutant dinosaur (?), stolen ideas from the original. I honestly like the 3rd installment in the franchise more. I have no idea why this movie was so popular.

LMAO the problem with his list is that other than Straight outta compton being a critical and financial hit, the other movies were not massive financial hits and just came and went with little fanfare (cept for ex machina which was a critical darling). lol the movie has to come in with massive hype to be OVERrated. lol

Why is it that no one here understands the definition of the word overrated? You are the third person to say it being overrated has to do with how much money it made. No.....being overrated is when the critics (or audiences) claim it's far better than it is. No one claims any of the Transformers films are great movies, but they all made buttloads of cash. They can't be overrated because most people agree they're stupid.

These lists were made in advance, not as an afterthought to anyone's reaction to yesterday's list. That isn't how we do business. There's no "problem" with the lists. It's merely his opinion and, as the title suggests, an Unpopular one. This column has been around long enough and you've been in the comments section long enough to know that.

No Des, it boils down to almost the same question Blade Runner asks. What is the difference? Is it just the form that we accept as Humans. This is why Ava was created in a certain way. It was to make Caleb essentially change the way he interacted with Ava. He was vulnerable. But if you liked watching it and essentially thought of it as sexbots then I am sure you had a good night after watching it.

Ex Machina is definitely not over rated

Ex Machina is not over-rated and should not be on this list. First and foremost, it wasn't a box office smash and I don't think that many non-movie-buffs even know it exists. Sure critics praised it, but come on, it was for good reason. Movies that are well-acted, original, and exciting are hard to come by. I agree that the plot had some predictable portions, but few movies really surprise me anyways.

And another person struggling with the concept of something being overrated. The word overrated doesn't refer to how much money something earns, it refers to how highly it's rated by people who do that sort of thing. The critics gave it a 92% rating, so I'm not sure how you think it could have been rated any higher.

Black Mass and The Walk weren't quite the masterpieces I was hoping they'd be. You can see everyone involved really gave it their all, but the stories just weren't as entertaining as one would expect. But Ex Machina was excellent.

Black Mass was the biggest disappointment for me this year. I actually hesitate to call it that, because I don't know that I was expecting much more than they gave based on reviews. All the actors did decent, and some were terrific but Depp and Edgerton were the only three-dimensional characters. I know Scott Cooper wanted to make a docu-drama where the facts are there, but the movie never had a chance to breathe because all it was was 1-2-3 without giving us a reason to care. As someone who

Black Mass was just terrible! By far the worst thing I paid to see in theaters this year (and that includes Spectre) Frankly I will likely never see another film directed by Scott cooper again, because this is second film were he took something interesting and turned it into a boring, slow, and utterly uninteresting slog.

By far the worst thing I paid to see in theaters this year (and that includes Spectre) Frankly I will likely never see another film directed by Scott cooper again, because this is second film were he took something interesting and turned it into a boring, slow, and utterly uninteresting slog.

While I wouldn't necessarily call it bad, I just couldn't get into Ex Machina, and this is coming from someone who considers Alex Garland's Sunshine to always have a special place in his heart. I just found it be too slow and I never got that interested in it. Oscar Isaac irritated me beyond belief as well (although I believe that was intentional to the take on the character). That being said the Dance scene was one of the best moments in any movie this year and the finial kill was great (largely due to the music adding such an eerie touch to it).

Agree with everything but...

Ex Machina, thought it was a great sci fi flick despite its flaws

Yep, hopping on this train. Ex Machina was far and away one of the very best movies of the year.

Obviously it wasn't, since practically no one bothered to see it.

"Best" and "popular" are rarely exclusive to each other.

Eh?

I enjoyed all of them and though I don't agree I can see where you could make a case for The Walk, Black Mass, and Bridge of Spies. Ex Machina and Compton were fantastic though. I can't get on board with those two. But... this IS The Unpopular Opinion.

I don't agree with Ex Machina at all. That movie was flat out terrific and was such a refreshing sci-fi film.

It was okay, but hardly "terrific." It was slow, predictable, and didn't actually tell an interesting story. The characters didn't undergo any arc whatsoever. I enjoyed it, but would never watch it again (because it was fairly boring).

Not that the movie relied on a heavy twist but what was so predictable about it?

As for the story, I thought the A.I. stuff was pretty well thought out and interesting to watch. I can't fault you for your opinion on that though. You're opinions are your own and just as valid as any of ours.

I agree that the AI stuff was fascinating and that the interaction with all four characters was intriguing to watch. I really did enjoy it the first time, but didn't feel there was anything interesting enough to watch a second time.

Like Alex said, I knew how it was going to end 15 minutes into the movie. I remember people saying that about Signs and how it spoiled the movie for them (whereas that one caught me by surprise), and now I understand. I was just waiting for the moment when

I was just waiting for the moment when he'd grow a pair, take out his boss, and save the robot.....only to be betrayed. It felt completely telegraphed to me.

I'm with Soloist. Absolutely loved it. Enjoyed that it took its time. I wasn't on a hurry to leave these characters.
