Tom Hanks would love to take on a role as the hero or villain in a comic book movie

Oct. 16, 2013by: Niki Stephens

You know who I never thought to cast in a comic book film?

Tom Hanks.

Maybe because I could never think of a role that would be perfect for him. In an interview with Showbiz 411, the question was asked why Hanks had yet to take part in a comic book film. He hilariously pleaded to the camera while saying this:

No, they don't ask me. I keep trying to come on. I can do it. I can do it. Even let me play a bad guy. Let me play the bad guy against Batman. I'll do anything - come on, call me. They never ask! What do I gotta do?

He then continues by saying that he strictly wants to be a major hero or villain, and doesn't want to be a character like Alfred:

"God, I want to throw a shield at somebody. I want that. I don't want to play the guy in the suit who tells these superheroes what's going on. I don't want to be that guy. 'Well, you know Batman... Captain America, Iron Man, here's what we've discovered'. I don't want to be that guy. I want to get in there, I want to play The Flash or something like that. They'll never give me a chance."

What role do you think that Hanks could take on? I'd give him a chance for something. It's freaking Tom Hanks. He's amazing.

Dear Robsquatch,
Tom Hanks is 57. Liam Neeson is kicking ass at 61. Ian Mckellen is chopping goblin heads off at freaking 74! Lay off the old guys! Half the cast of the expendables are old enough to be your grandfather and can still kick your ass :-P

Sean Bean is only 3 years younger than Hanks and he'll kick your ass too...sure he'll die shortly after, but he'll come back...kick your ass...and then probably die again.

I'VE GOT IT!!! Tom Hanks could play Bruce Wayne as a child. You know. Like when his parents are murdered. I could totally see him pulling off 9-10 years old. It's not like Tom Hanks is old or anything. Just look at the picture at the top of this article! It's totally 1985 right now and Tom Hanks is still THAT young! AMAZING!!!

Vandal Savage

How great would it be to get a JL movie with Savage as the main villain played by Hanks.

If he got himself in shape I could see him playing Mr. Fantastic. Or if DC, I could see him not necessarily taking the main stage, but playing a significant supporting role like Jay Garrick, the original Flash. At this point, I don't think there are too many heroes he could take on.

On the villain side, I could see him playing the Riddler, that would be a really inspired choice. Or maybe Toymaker depending on the new version of Batman with Affleck.

He's already been in a comic book movie

And a damn good one. Road To Perdition. Funny thing is, I recall him claiming that he never read comics, knew next to nothing about them, didn't care for them and had no idea what a graphic novel was or wear to buy one. That being said, the man can do anything, and I'd love to see him in a big role. Imagine the Bruce Banner he could have been...

said it for years

Tom Hanks could play a very unsettling villain for the same reason Henry Fonda was so effective in "Once Upon a Time in the West". He would for sure be playing against type of his everyman, good boy image and of course he has the acting chops. Would love to see it!!

As I was saying, those are based on his looks. Some interesting chooses would be to take his persona and charm and turn it around. A villain that had a good life, then lost it all. So in that respect

Mr freeze
Silver Surfer
Clay face

Batman Villain for sure....and Indiana Jones Villain Anyone?

I know this is not strictly comic book, but...What about Ford vs Hanks in a (good) Indiana Jones film? I don't think Hanks and Ford have even shared the screen together. What about that?
Otherwise, I'm agreeing with a lot of others that he'd make a superb Batman Villain, ala Freeze (great choice). I think Two-Face would be another great choice as the Nolan take was very brief and left many disappointed. Tom Hanks would have no trouble navigating the "White Knight" aspect of Harvey Dent

Is there a list of the high rollers (e.g. Cruise, Smith, Rock) not attached to a mainstream comic book franchises? It would be interesting to see just who WB's have left to pick from...assuming they don't want to go with someone who Marvel have cast...because whoever they cast seems to nail it and it might then become difficult for us to seem them playing a DC superhero (though I still want Jamie Alexander for WW). Hell, Marvel has already nabbed old timers like Jones and Radford. Who would bet against them bringing in Hanks and the Rock (not that theyre old timers). You only have to look at the gravitas Man of Steel got from the casting of the Costner and Crowe, to realise the impact actors like that add to a comic book film (just as Caine, Freeman and Oldman did for Nolans Batman) - those two had the best lines in that epic third Man of Steel trailer. I know I mock WB's slowly slowly catchy monkey attempts to do anything with their cinematic universe but it's only coz I want them to succeed. Man of Steel shows they (or the Nolan gang) can cast just as well as Marvel and with the likes of Hanks, the Rock and others still up for grabs WBs can still make an equal success of it.

Someone cast him as old Tony Stark - the plot should write itself.
It would be cool to see him go crazy as a villain, but would it be too distracting that he's, you know, Tom Hanks?

backtothecritic - good call... he could be a great Mr Freeze - just wanting a cure for his wife. Do it properly...like the classic Conroy Batman stuff...not Arnie's version though. With that kind of role in mind, there's loads of stuff he can do. Kang, as another poster mentioned....or anyone of the scientists turned villains Parker always seems to make. I guess he could also have played the white Nick Fury too think Hoff but with a far superior actor. Knowing Marvel ...they'll probably

As an actor, Tom Hanks is second to none. DC or Marvel would be fools not to cast him in one of their movies if he wants in.

That said, what role would he play? He's too important to play a single-shot villain, perhaps a recurring one a la Loki? He's an incredible actor, but his Achilles Heel is that he's just too damn likable to play a villain, IMO.

Given that he now has diabetes, I can't see him going all Hugh Jackman for a role and he just doesn't have the physical presence to do a

Think of him playing an older character than he is in real life. Put a tin hat on him and he'd be a great Golden Age Flash. Maybe Wildcat or Sandman. The Smallville version of Dr Fate who'd had his life stolen by the helmet of Nabu.
Actually you could do an almost Expendables-like film cast with the Justice Society.

Done. I had never even thought of that, but I think he'd be my top pick out of American actors for the role.

Don't worry about it. People on here are dumb as fuck and don't get sarcasm. It's almost pointless even posting on here.

I can see him being Dr Strange or Mr. Fantastic, especially if they were to do a 60's campy version.

Or any number of villains. Lex Luthor, Hugo Strange, The Riddler, Mr. Freeze, etc.

If he's willing, just make it happen. I bet Marvel is already on the phone with him even though DC/WB would have an easier time find the right part for him.

GIVE HIM A ROLE

While I can't think of a character he can play, I really think he deserves a major comic role. I've always thought Hanks was cool. I may be dating myself here but I remember watching his OLD show Bussom Budies (SP) back in the 80s, then "BIG" came out and just like many kids back then, I wanted to be him. So for him to be in a comic film, I say GIVE HIM A MAJOR ROLE. Hanks is a great actor, and the way comic movies are expanding, he deserves it. Glen Close and Robert Redford are now in comic

Hell both of them are in comic films and I would have never guessed them to ever show their face in those types of films. So give the man a role!

not Flash!

.... but maybe Captain Cold?

Scarface from Batman (as the puppeteer) could work too since he has that nice guy look to him.

Make him a villain

Imagine the next Batman/Superman film, we see someone on screen and we're like, oh wait... is that Tom Hanks? Who's he playing, is it Alfred?
Then someone comes in and calls him Mr Luthor and we realise, holy shit, Tom Hanks is the fuckin bad guy.
It'll be like Henry Fonda in Once In The West for the modern age.

Even if not Lex just the idea of bad guy Tom Hanks is too good an opportunity to miss.

Sounds cool! He's been saying that he's wanted to play a Bond villain for YEARS and nothing! GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE ALREADY!!! Where's the "C'mon Hollywood" article when we need it???

I'm stumped

I do think he should go for a gritty action movie like he did with Road to Perdition, except fun and energetic rather than plodding and saccharine.
