Tough and gritty trailer and poster for Steven Knight's Hummingbird starring Jason Statham

03.22.2013

Statham is back at it again, this time teaming up with EASTERN PROMISES screenwriter Steven Knight for HUMMINGBIRD, a gritty revenge thriller set in the London underground.  In many ways it looks like the same ol' same ol' from Mr. Statham, but at this point, I feel like he's saturated the market so much that we won't ever be able to discern between the good and the bad.  Certainly having Knight writing and directing could make this a win in the Statham checkbox, but it's hard to say.  HUMMINGBIRD does look interesting, though, and not as cheeky or hyperbolic as Stathams usual fare, but a few one man vs. a gang fight scenes could empty that tank real quick.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

Living homeless after going on the run from a military court-martial, Joey Jones (Statham) is a damaged ex-special forces soldier trapped in London’s criminal underworld. But when opportunity enables him to assume another man’s identity, he is transformed into an avenging angel.

HUMMINGBIRD is set for a UK release on May 17, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'd really like to see Statham back in the lens of Guy Ritchie. I mean, if he's going to keep doing the same ol' stuff, it may as well be the really good same ol' stuff.

I've all but...

realized why I have such a man-crush on the Stath. This will be his best role. It looks combination of Transporter, Safe, and London thrown into it for good measure. Plus, I'm in agreement that he is working with better/higher profile people and that he is back in London. I'm sorry flame me all you want, but the Brits style of cinema is much more luring to me than anything that would be considered gritty or edgy or hell just plain better entertainment than we have in the states right now. I'm really looking forward to seeing this along with Homefront that Sly wrote. I hope he gets to kick the shit out of Franco because he, I cannot stand.

And as far as the extra tidbit. Yes, I'd like to see him work with Guy again and think him playing more of a role in the new Fast/Furious is a good direction to go in. Hell, if Guy gets chosen to do Bond I'd love to see Stath have a supporting role in it because I think he's earned it.

End rant, flame away...

Two things have me intrigued here. Steven Knight, and Statham back in London, where he belongs. And while there definitely feels they are building up to him kicking ass, there looks like a lot more drama involved this time.

Being a huge "Stath" fan, this does promise to be better than his usual stuff, it will be interesting to see what kind of role Vicky McClure is going to have in it, one of the best actresses to come out of the UK for a long, long time.

I enjoy when Statham does what he does best: kick ass. And this looks like a pretty good film.

Looks awesome! I'll be watching that on release night. I thoroughly enjoyed SAFE and the Transporter movies. I didn't even watch Parker, but that one looked lame even in the trailer...

Looks good. Seems like a lot of people have an issue with Statham being typecast, but I'm okay with that. What he does, he does well, and it's generally pretty entertaining. This looks like a slight cut above the rest, with him playing something more thespian akin to Snatch, Revolver, or Bank Job, so I'm game.

Trying, but...not quite

I can see how Statham might feel he is stretching, but this really does look like every other thing he does. I wish some writer/director would come along and utilize him differently for ONCE.
