Twilight's Kellan Lutz cast as lead in Renny Harlin's Hercules 3D

Apr. 5, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The Renny Harlin directed HERCULES 3D has now found its Hercules in TWILIGHT and IMMORTALS star Kellan Lutz. Best known for his role as Emmett Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's infamous series of films, the actor has also mostly been cast in roles that cash in on his physique more so than his acting chops. I will say, however, that he was quite good in the underrated IMMORTALS, where he played Poseidon.  Harlin is confident in Lutz, though, saying:

"It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He's not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart."

No official synopsis has been released for the film, which is competing with Brett Ratner's HERCULES film starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular God, but it "will have at its center a love story between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules."

I think Lutz can pull off HERCULES 3D without a hitch, but if we could successfully merge both competing projects and have Harllin directing Johnson as the character I'd be much more excited. However, I am happy to see Harlin back in big-budget fare and am hoping for a a rollicking good time.

HERCULES 3D is set to start filming in May with a release sometime in March 2014, beating Ratner's pic, which hits in August 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think a Twilight stigma will hurt Lutz or is he unrecognizable enough from that franchise to escape it? Personally, i think he'll do fine.

I hope this doesnt interfere with the Justice League shooting schedule??

He should be concentrating on playing AQUAMAN. He was born to play that role. He rocked as Posieden and can handle the trident with ease. Other than that yeah, he will do fine as Herc.

I'm not an expert on Greek mythology, but how are either of these movies different from Clash of the Titans? Perseus was also a half-mortal son of Zeus. There's a princess. I imagine there will be fights with mythological beasts and other gods, etc. Just curious.

its not really different, its all part of the same mythology, Zeus had many many many many many many many many children, some Gods and Some half Gods/Mortal... Perseus is his Son and Hercules is also his son, from different mothers.

I'm just glad to see a new Hercules movie is being made. such potential to bring a fresh take on the legend.

Actually, I'd like to see a Marvel's HERCULES adaptation with Johnson, not the 'realistic' BS Ratner is going to do.
On the other hand, THIS Titans-like Hercules might be fun and Lutz is not a bad actor.

What is with sudden phase where 2 movies with pretty much the same shit going on come out in the same year? Last year it was two Snow White movies, and this year we'll have two "White House gets attacked" movies. Now, two hercules movies. What's going on in Hollywood?

Its not a new trend. Armegeddon and Deep Impact both came out in summer 1998, and Dante's Peak and Volcano both came out the summer before that. Hollywood as a long history of doing this, although you're right, it seems to have shifted into especially high gear lately.

Don't forget A Bug's Life and Antz, followed by Finding Nemo and A Shark Tale. It happens constantly!

I'm sure both of these movies will suck. It's a shame too, because Hercules deserves a great movie.

Johnson would have been better as Hercules ten years ago, though I wouldn't bet against Ratner's movie because his star is on a roll. Kellan Lutz is in the right age range I think, and while I cannot attest to his acting prowess, he is pretty impressive physically. He'll at least be the next Sam Worthington.

To be fully honest, I don't care about either project, but as a bit of a fan of Greek mythology, I decided to put in my two cents.

Pretty bad when you can't get excited about adapting something cool. TWICE. Not holding breath but maybe at least one will be good.

So we have two Hercules movies?
Why not give us a good R-rated God of War ?
Dwayne Johnson as Kratos goddammit !
All right, all right...I'm calm...
