Universal options Joe Hill's comic Locke & Key for a feature film

Locke & Key

I probably walk by Stephen King's house once every couple of a week. It's not on purpose or anything it's just a convenient way to get to a friend's house. Growing up near the author's home for many years (as well as living in Bangor as an adult) means there's always a chance you might run into the guy. My brother saw him at a gas station recently buying cream horns (coincidentally one of my favorite junk food snacks) and my mom actually almost hit him many years before his tragic accident because he was trying to cross the street while reading a book.

But I never know when his son and fellow author Joe Hill is kicking around town. His novels Heart-Shaped Box and Horns are fantastic but his comic series Locke & Key is just as awesome. There's been a couple of failed attempts to bring the series to the big screen or television and Heat Vision has learned that Universal will be the next to take a crack at it, optioning the comic for a feature film. STAR TREK and TRANSFORMERS writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing the adaptation with Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Publishing.

Synopsis:

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them, and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.

I do wish that the television series had worked out but if there is going to be a movie adaptation of Locke & Key I'm perfectly happy with that too if they get it right. There's a chance some of the violence could get toned down for the film (although I didn't think it was too graphic in the comics I've read) since making it PG-13 would make the studio more money, especially since most of the main cast of the comic is young. I wouldn't say Locke & Key as a film needs to be R-rated but I'd definitely prefer if it was.

NOS4A2

I recently finished NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. I've read all Joe Hill's work (including his amazing Locke & Key series, still wrapping up now!) and I can honestly say he continues to grow as a writer. His 3rd novel is truly amazing and shows how he is able to bring in a newer generation while paying respects to his father and those that came before him. He is truly an amazing writer that may well become as well known as his father. I don't think it will ever be an issue of comparing the two because

I don't think it will ever be an issue of comparing the two because they are different enough (Joe Hill became famous for his superb writing before his relationship to Stephen King was known), but I know that Joe Hill & Stephen King both have a great way of telling stories and making characters you genuinely care about. I'd recommend NOS4A2 for anyone who wants to have a unique novel spanning decades with characters you love to see and hate to lose when the book is over. You won't regret it.

In addition, Locke & Key really needed a series to tell all the wonders from that world, but if they make a movie (rated PG-13 or R) it just needs to do the source material justice. With the material it's based off of, it could be a trilogy of movies easily. I just hope they don't get too far ahead of themselves and just make an amazing and entertaining story for all to enjoy!

Oh, I hope they don't mess this up. The books are amazing. I can kind of see them getting away with a PG-13 too, but if they keep with the tone of the books (which they better) they'll still have to deal with some depressing and dark stuff. I really need to re-read this series.

Cool

Wish it was coming as a TV series...but film could be just as good. I pick up anything that Hill writes. His 20th 20th Century Ghosts is full of original ghost short stories. Loved Heart-Shaped Box, and Horns was just plain weird. NOS4A2 is next on my reading list.

As to Locke & Key. amazing...each series gets more intense.

READ THESE BOOKS!!!

Even if you do not enjoy comics READ THESE BOOKS. Locke & Key is one of the most original, thought provoking and emotionally draining graphic novels created in the last 10 years. Great back story, relatable characters, great opportunity for unique special effects and the villain is basically the same character his father uses in a few of his novels. Could turn out to be something special with the right script, direction and great acting!!

This is great news. Locke & Key is hands down one of the most brilliant comics out there today. Hill has become one of my favorite writers these days. But that should come as no surprise since he come from great stock.
