Warner Bros snatches up spec script for The Samurai from Warrior director Gavin O'Connor

09.30.2011
Warner Bros seems to be everywhere in the news of late! According to Deadline, the studio has ponied up something in the high six-figures for spec script THE SAMURAI, the follow-up film by WARRIOR helmer Gavin O'Connor.

Written by O'Connor and Michael J. Wilson (SHARK TALE, THE TUXEDO), THE SAMURAI "is about a rogue assassin named Townes Joyce, who breaks out of a Texas jail that puts him on the run from an international manhunt. Along the way, he gets involved with a woman and her child, and they go along for a ride that spans Costa Rica, Colombia, Paris and back to the U.S."

WB is looking to start production on THE SAMURAI fairly quickly since O'Connor is also working on a stage adaptation of 1961's THE HUSTLER with Renee Zellweger.

WARRIOR, a film well-liked by critics, is currently in theaters being seen by no one.

Desperately needs a new title, sounds like an old school kung fu movie, ya got away with Warrior, which sounded like the sequel to Gladiator. Maybe thats another reason its not getting recognition.

Nothing against the movie, which sounds like the perfect vehicle for 1994 version of Van Damme, but what's what's with the non-samurai related movie title? Might as well have called it Viking or Legionnaire or something.

So... tell my why again this movie is called The Samurai? It doesn't even seem to fit as a metaphor.

Exactly. If you know anything about samurais, you know that they were public figures that lived by a code of honor, while ninjas were known for subterfuge and assassination. So not only is this title misleading, but it's also tarnishes the image of samurais.
