WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

AVATAR goes down...!!

After writing about AVATAR for the past 7 straight weeks, it feels a little strange writing about another movie being in the #1 spot at the box-office this weekend. Kinda like I'm cheating on James Cameron, you know? Mind you, I don't think Cameron is too upset about DEAR JOHN knocking his juggernaut of a movie from the top spot this weekend, especially now that AVATAR is officially the #1 highest-grossing domestic movie of all-time...and then some!

As you all surely know by now (and don't call me Shirley), Cameron's previous film, TITANIC, held that record since 1998 with about $600M in grosses, but AVATAR is already at $630M and counting. AVATAR also became the film to remain at the #1 spot the longest (7 weeks) since TITANIC (15 weeks in a row). For those outside the U.S., same shit applies to you as well. AVATAR has grossed $2.2 BILLION worldwide, beating TITANIC's previous record of $1.8 billion. Oh and did I mention...it's not done yet!

But enough about AVATAR. Let me see if I can try and focus on some other movies this weekend. For example, DEAR JOHN. Seems a lot of females out there were getting a little tired of seeing blue peeps hogging the #1 spot, and seemingly strong-armed their boyfriends into taking them to see Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried in the first big "romance flick" of 2010 (and just in time for Valentine's Day) and it worked! (84% of DEAR JOHN audiences were chicks)

Travolta's fun-looking movie, FROM PARIS WITH LOVE, opened in 3rd place with a decent $8M showing, while the buzz over Jeff Bridges in CRAZY HEART seems to have given that limited release a nice boost from 14th to 8th place this weekend. And wow, when did THE BOOK OF ELI get to $82M in grosses...nice! The three films that were drop-kicked from the top 10 this weekend include THE LOVELY BONES ($42M), ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL ($212M) and IT'S COMPLICATED ($108M).

Next week sees the release of 3 new BIG movies including a little something-something called VALENTINE'S DAY (originality, thy name is Hollywood) starring everyone from Jessica Alba, Julia Roberts, Anna Hathaway and Jessica Biel to Bradley Cooper, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx and Ashton Kutcher and many others! The kids will also be getting a Harry Potter rip-off called PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF, while genre-fiends will finally get to see THE WOLFMAN starring Benicio del Toro and a lot of hair. How much do you think THE WOLFMAN will make next weekend? VOTE HERE!!!

1. Dear John $ 32.4 Million
NEW
2. Avatar $ 23.6 Million $ 630.1 Million
3. From Paris with Love $ 8.1 Million
NEW
4. Edge of Darkness $ 7 Million $ 29.1 Million
5. Tooth Fairy $ 6.5 Million $ 34.3 Million
6. When in Rome $ 5.5 Million $ 20.9 Million
7. The Book of Eli $ 4.8 Million $ 82.2 Million
8. Crazy Heart $ 3.7 Million $ 11.2 Million
9. Legion $ 3.4 Million $ 34.5 Million
10. Sherlock Holmes $ 2.6 Million $ 201.6 Million

I am always amazed at the lack of true understanding of box office numbers. When a movie that cost $55 million just to make (not counting the $30-$40 million in P&A costs) opens to $8 million, that is not "decent." It's not even close to decent. From Paris With Love is in 2,722 theaters for a per theater average of less than $3,000. That is very bad. It'll be lucky to make $25 million total,...

Again, that's very bad.

surprise
This really is a surprise, i thought Valentines day would be the first film to take the 1 spot from avatar.I am also really afraid that next weekend wolfman will open really small, grossing like 8-15 million and because of that it will flop.

It's pretty funny that it was Dear John that knocked it out of first place. And as shitty as that movie looks, at least it wasn't another Meet the Spartans or something. And for whoever said it was because of Super Bowl weekend that's not true. I predicted it to fall next week, with Valentine's Day and Percy Jackson coming out (never underestimate chick flicks and brat flicks).

The poll was on the 17th, and most votes went for only 2 more weeks at number one.

Brainless Chicks beat out Brainless Nerds... YAY!!

Now, don't go crying Avatar fans, Cameron has enough money to not only rebuild Haiti, but move it off a fault line. And once Avatar 2: Return Of Papa Smurf - in 4D Smell-o-vision comes out, everyone will forget Dear John even existed.

And about Dear John... how come Judd Hirsch isn't in any of the trailers?

I attribute the success to Nicholas Sparks fans and fans of "The Notebook." It was constantly compared to it during the trailers and it's no surprise audiences wanted to see how it stacked up since "The Notebook" has now become a romance classic.

Pissed that of all movies to beat Avatar's 7-week streak, it was Dear John. Kind of like how out of all hockey teams to beat the Ottawa Senators' 11-game win-streak, it was the fucking Toronto Maple Leafs. A bad weekend for streaks ending to be sure.

Other than that, From Paris With Love kicked ass. Great action fun to be had and one of Travolta's most enjoyable performances in...

And how ridiculous is that cast for V-Day?

Still made double on Friday. Would have taken #1 no matter what was going on Sunday.

I think two things bought Avatar down this weekend. The fact that it lost a good portion of its core audience to the superbowl. And the female partners of those guys watching the superbowl then found themselves with a free weekend and went and saw a chick flick. Boosting Dear John and reducung Avatar's take. If they meant it or not, releasing Dear John this weekend was a good bit of counter...

Sunday afternoons, as every weekend, studio estimates are released and they take into consideration the fact that they WILL take those hits on Sunday because of the big game.
