Weekend Box Office Report: October 25-27, 2013

Oct. 27, 2013by:

Jackass knocks Gravity out of orbit!

It took the self-punishing power of Johnny Knoxville to finally dislodge GRAVITY from the top of the box office, putting JACKASS PRESENTS BAD GRANDPA at #1 with an opening of $32 million!

BAD GRANDPA puts Knoxville in old-man makeup as senior citizen Irving Zisman on an R-rated cross-country trip with his grandson, with numerous collisions and concussions occurring along the way. While its opening is quite a bit below JACKASS 3D's $50.3 million opening back in October 2010 (it went on to $117.2 million total), BAD GRANDPA has already more than doubled its reported $15M production budget, and crowds gave the crash comedy a 'B' CinemaScore.

GRAVITY still has plenty of thruster fuel in second place, collecting another $20.3 million in its fourth week as it nears $200 million domestically (plus an additional $114 million from overseas), now making it the biggest October release (MEET THE PARENTS hit $166.2 million in the year 2000). CAPTAIN PHILLIPS is still cruising along in third with $11.8 million, a 28% drop from its second weekend.

The A-list cast wasn't enough to push THE COUNSELOR higher than a fourth place opening with only $8 million. The R-rated thriller from director Ridley Scott and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN writer Cormac McCarthy got brutalized by audiences, who whomped it with a rare and lethal 'D' CinemaScore. And critics weren't any more gentle, judging by that 35% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 finally bit into the $100 million mark after five weeks in theaters, while two of last weekend's new releases, the R-rated CARRIE and ESCAPE PLAN, dipped to sixth and seventh (drops of 63% and 56% respectively).

On a mere 123 screens, the acclaimed historical drama 12 YEARS A SLAVE scrambled onto the chart in eighth place with $2.1 million, and a per-screen average nearly twice that of the #1 movie. Actors Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt will likely end up with far more attention for this film (95% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A' CinemaScore) than their work in THE COUNSELOR, which will be lucky to last more than a week on the chart.

ENOUGH SAID and PRISONERS finish out the list, while INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 and RUNNER RUNNER exit the chart along with THE FIFTH ESTATE after a single weekend in the Top 10. For limited releases, the NC-17 French love story BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR had the most impact with a $25k per-screen average.

Next weekend brings the sci-fi epic ENDER'S GAME, the computer-animated family flick FREE BIRDS, and the old fogey bachelor party comedy LAST VEGAS, plus limited releases DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, the biopic DIANA and the romcom ABOUT TIME.

The Counselor

I'm glad The Counselor didn't take off with audiences. While I am a huge fan of pretty much everyone who was involved, the entire film just felt like it was wandering around through densely scripted scenes and it ultimately went nowhere. I think it's because McCarthy hasn't penned a screenplay before and wrote it like he would his normal prose so the screenplay didn't translate to the screen. As a book, it'd probably work but it doesn't build anything on the screen. I was really disappointed.

Cameron Diaz probably matched Jodie Foster with the worst performance in a major motion picture by a big name actress. Talk about miscast. But yeah, all in all, the film didn't work for me at all and I am sure the audience isn't responding to it because of the reasons I gave.

No suprise

Not surprised at how bad Captain Philips is doing. Great to see Bad Grandpa do so well. It was fantastic.

Maybe you haven't seen Captain Phillips, because, um, it's pretty awesome. I'm sure Bad Grandpa is neato, but we're kinda talking about apples and oranges here. Just sayin'.

Where do you see Captain Phillips doing bad? It's still in the top 3 and it's been out for 3 weeks. It cost $55 million to make, has made $70 million in the US alone, $26 million overseas for a total of $96 million worldwide.

Besides the numbers, the film is great and Tom Hanks gives another unforgettable performance.

The Soloist

Im sorry that I may be off topic, but what did the soloist do to people? His comments aren't really that off the wall or short on logic. Yet he just gets thumbed down for every comment he makes. Don't get me wrong though - I saw that he had a comment up and thumbed it down without reading it. When in Rome...

I've stuck up for him before...I think he accepts it now

what does bug though is when someone else says the same as him and gets positive

Ridin' Solo...
I think he may have pissed off one or two people, and with a glitch in the system allowing those on Android/Google phones to vote as many times as they like, someone is taking out their ire in mass quantities. The same person that thumbed you down just for posting this comment, no doubt. Some folks are just lame and have nothing better to do. Besides jack-off to Bikini Leia, I mean.

I was thinking of posting a comment about this too a couple weeks ago before I came to the conclusion that people are going to do what they with no real or justifying point. I really agree with this comment until the very end. Basically you just answered your own question and confirmed that people don't need a reason to shoot down others.

There are people who have better memories than me. Soloist has said some pretty dumb things in the past and some people obviously have kept track of them and vote down whatever he says. I used to vote him down too. Sometimes a person will say something so dumb that you want to vote him down twice but you can't so you get him next time. But after a while it doesn't make sense to vote someone down for something he said months ago. The question you should be asking is what has he said

I can't think of anything.

Oh and it doesn't help that his avatar is Ryan Reynolds from Green Lantern or that he keeps suggesting Bradley Cooper for the Flash whenever the discussion comes up. Some people have accused him of being gay. Ah. That may be it. Homophobia is a very powerful motivator.

He's never really been unkind to anyone or exhibited troll-like behaviour and I think there's nothing wrong in always having something positive to say. I guess part of it can be attributed to having Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern in his avatar. I don't support giving someone a thumbs down without even reading what they have to say.

Don't worry about Soloist. Thumbing him down is how we show the love. This place wouldn't be the same without him.

Saw 12 Years a Slave this weekend. Truly, one of the hardest film I've ever had to sit through. And rare is it that a film has that effect on me.

So glad to see bad grandpa knocked gravity off the number 1 spot. I know the film buffs are gonna hate me for liking it, but I don't care. Not every film has to be a crowd mover

I may be a moron here but: How does Gravity hitting close to 200 million domestic make it the biggest October hit SINCE Meet The Parents hit 166 Million?! Wouldn't that make it bigger than meet the parents' take and thus be the biggest October release since... ever??!

I may be the wrong on here, cuz I'm confusing myself even just typing this, but someone explain to me if i am wrong! Thanks

It just means that Gravity is the most successful October hit and the last successful box office movie in October was Meet The Parents. The statement doesn't compare the amount of money but the success. It means that no October film has been a huge hit as of late and the last to do so was Meet the Parents. Make any sense? (I know that I am probably being redundant.)

But, no, that doesn't make you a moron.

Bad Grandpa was a huge disappointment. All of the best bits are spoiled in the trailer and there wasn't anything else that got more than a slight chuckle out of me.

Glad to see Bad Grandpa coming out on top. It was definitely funnier than I thought it would be and it's great to see people still interested in that type of humor.

Disappointed that The Counselor didn't do better. I thought it was great with a really good script with some great dialogue and violence. The only flaw I would say is Diaz. Very miscasted in her role. I wish they has casted someone who can actually act and bring depth to a role that was important as hers in the film.

And also excited to hear that 12 Years A Slave is doing well too. The trailers look great and I am waiting with much anticipation to finally see it.
