What did you think of...Captain America: Civil War?

05.07.2016

One of the most anticipated movies of the year has arrived (if not THE most anticipated) with Joe and Anthony Russo's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, the third standalone Cap film to date and the biggest ensemble for a standalone to boot, featuring a massive cast that includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Daniel Bruhl, William Hurt, and Chadwick Boseman, making his first appearance as Black Panther, as well as Tom Holland, making HIS first appearance as Spider-Man. Yeah, it's a full house.

So far the reviews have been absolutely glowing with a few minor nitpicks here and there, but mostly an overwhelming show of admiration for what is being heralded by many as the best comic book movie to date. It came pretty close for me and although I still think THE WINTER SOLDIER is the better Cap film, CIVIL WAR is no doubt an amazing superhero film and the best example of an ensemble one thus far (My 9/10 review here). Eric Walkuski also gave the film a 9/10, saying the film is "simply a grand old time at the movies, and when there are this many splendid characters on the screen at once, it's actually hard to complain about a thing."

Finally caught it. WHile it was a lot of fun, I didn't think it was anything groundbreaking and it pretty much rehashes the Marvel formula as far as all the Avengers stuff (which felt unecessary, but I get that they want to make get this money) is concerned. The stakes just never felt real throughout. There was an added layer of depth, though with the expansion of the Winter Soldier plot. That was satisfying spy thriller stuff. The stakes just never felt real throughout. There was an added layer of depth, though with the expansion of the Winter Soldier plot. That was satisfying spy thriller stuff. Also, the airport battle was far from the best superhero action scene ever filmed. And Tom Holland's Spider-Man was nowhere near as solid as Toby Maguire in Spider-man 2. All in all, I still don't trust Joblo with Marvel reviews, but I had a good time with this one, despite its weak villain and sometimes forced plot. I'd give this a good 8/10 because of the Cap/Bucky/Sam dyanmic and spy thriller vibe, which I truly enjoyed.

Also, they had footage of Tony Stark's parents' death that Zemo somehow happened to get ahold of? A little far fetched even for a super hero movie.

In 2016, we had two major movies so far where two good superheroes fight against each other. And in Batman v Superman, the fight ended between the heroes because of the thought of Batman's mother. In Civil War, the (real) fight started because of the thought of Iron Man's mother.

Loved it; I was wary when they cast Spidey so young, but Holland fucking nailed it. Rudd was awesome as well, and I am so officially smitten with Elizabeth Olsen. Bruhl was good, but this iteration of Zemo was kinda meh.

Sure, the airport scene had everyone but Black Panther pulling punches. After all, most of these people are friends and just trying to win a domestic dispute. However, the Cap/Iron Man/Winter Soldier showdown later on was no-holds-barred. And it ended with Captain America a wanted man, and presumably Falcon, Ant-Man, Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch along with him.

Good Movie

I'm one of the few that actually loved BvS so I was going into this wanting to come away disappointed but I can't deny it was a smart well crafted movie. Everyone is acting at the top of their game and I dug the Winter Soldier/Hawkeye dynamic.
On that note I HATE the new Spider-Man. None of his lines were at all funny and he sounds like Michelangelo too much. Should've kept Garfield.

You couldn't be more wrong. The only big applause in the theater the first time I saw it was the end credit when it said Spider Man would be back. The second was with my teenage daughter who fell in love with Holland's portrayal. This is going to be an ENORMOUS franchise for Marvel / Sony.

I enjoyed the movie

It was fun. I had fun. At the same time, it just felt too goofy. Nothing about this world feels real anymore. As much as I enjoyed the Airport scene, it was a little too silly. IDK. And what the hell happened to Crossbones? Another wasted villain.

Amazing

Best superhero film I have ever seen. As a kid, I never thought in a million years I would see all these characters on screen. Each one felt like they jumped straight out if the comics. I am definitely biased towards hero films, but how could you possibly find anything wrong with this film. 11/10

Best Marvel film?

Could be. It's way up there in terms of a straight forward superhero film. Made up for and is far better than the abomination that Avengers; AOU was.

It was a great movie, but hardly a successor to The Avengers....

Kudos to them for crafting an outstanding film that had great acting, solid character arcs, the right amount of humor to offset the action, and just amazing fight scenes that were far superior to anything we've seen before. Holland and Bosewick absolutely stole the movie with great appearances (trust me, the audience was buzzing more about the Spider-man post-credit than anything in the movie). Rudd was really funny (and the Giant Man scene was beyond amazing) as well. All of the main characters were really well done, and Evans was perfect in the role as usual.

The problem with the film is the premise. The idea that any of them would agree to work for the UN (or believe that state sponsors of terrorism would be the people to give orders to superheroes) is ridiculous. It was fine to see the big battle, but how is seeing Rhodie crippled a good-time? The bad guy was just some random dude (with a name from the comics) who was irrationally angry about the Avengers only saving 90% of Sekovia from Ultron. So no Good vs Evil here, no spectacular victory, no rising to meet the challenge. . . . just a bunch of people making irrational choices, then fighting their friends over the choices.

So in the end it had many of the same problems BvS did. No one to root for, just big action (and the audience having to ignore common sense to accept it). And in the end they overcame nothing. So it was a movie about nothing (albeit a really well-made one).

Was it completely flawless, no (damn you shaky cam), but damn if it wasn't the best superhero movie I've ever seen. Damn if it wasn't what every superhero movie should aspire to be. The Winter Soldier was my favorite superhero movie prior to this (with Dark Knight second), but this just floored me. Team Cap all the way. Evans to me exemplifies everything Rogers was in the comics to me as much if not more so than Downey does with Stark. SO much has been said here that I'd be repeating everyone

SO much has been said here that I'd be repeating everyone else with the accolades. Yes the airport scene was so far above and beyond anything and everything done in any comic movie that it can't truly be described and done justice. Instead I'd like to thank the Russos for the 2 best comci book movies made, and drop to my knees and thank the Marvel gods for appointing them to steer the Marvel ship for the foreseeable future. I'm now more than ever, confident that the Infinity War Avengers movies will knock it out of the park. The Russo's have demonstrated their ability to juggle and ensemble cast and make every character meaningful while not shortchanging any of them.

Their most impressive feat though was not only juggling all the characters we already knew, but also having to do double duty introduce TWO new MCU characters as well. And man did they ever. In fact the most exciting characters in the movie were Spidey and Black Panther. One everyone knows, the other not many do. But both felt like characters that everyone knew by the end of it. Most directors could never achieve what these guys did. They've made me excited, even more than I already was for Black Panther. They also have me ultra hyped for a Spider Man movie which I haven't been for 15 years.

One last thing. Marvel has had its big screen villain problem (small screen in amazing) save for Loki, but I thought Zemo was actually outstanding. Zemo was a great villain. He was a puppet master, and he admitted he couldn't go toe to toe with the Avengers. Since he couldn't did something better, he had them destroy themselves. He pulled all the right strings and did something no other Marvel villain has done, he tore apart the Avengers by making them tear each other apart. He didn't have his mind on total world domination, he didn't want to kill everyone, and he didn't want ultimate power. He just simply wanted to tear apart the people who tore his life apart. And he succeeded. Yes it might seem like he didn't do much, but that was his brilliance in my mind. I love the fact they kept him alive, because he's someone I'd love to see return. I know I'll probably get shit for praising this guy since most think he was weak, but I stand by it. He did what Loki couldn't.

Yeah, I couldn't disagree more. It would be like complimenting the guy taking out the trash. He was utterly useless and could have never actually attained the information he did. He had no money or resources to even know who the government was going to hire to talk to Bucky, and no way of finding the Russian soldier who had the info on the Winter Soldier (or knowing the guy would have all that crucial material). The guy was treated as a puppet master / superhero, but he was just a random

The movie suffered because there was no one to root against (accept the stupidity of the premise). It succeeded because the action scenes were so good and the Evans / Downey dynamic was brilliant. But what all superhero movies should try to be? Hardly. I walked out of the theater without any desire to see it again. It wasn't uplifting or thrilling, just an interesting story with really cool fight scenes. At least Winter Soldier had a real villain.

Whelp judging by the box office, the reviews, and the reception, you're in the minuscule minority. And I'm completely ok with that. So hopefully based on all of that, they'll use this movie as a framework for everything going forward.

You aren't alone Des1. I felt like I watched a completely different movie from everyone else. It wasn't bad by any means. I had a lot of fun and I did enjoy most of the movie. However, this was a major step backwards from Winter Soldier. The whole movie just seemed silly.

Meh...

It was ok. It lost all emotional weight during the airport scene. It was cool, but not impactful. Nothing about this world feels "real". Everything is just so staged and crisp with every hair in place and every care shiny. I knew it would be fun to watch but hollow. Once again, there are no consequences. Civil war! All we get are some bumps and bruises and we already know the set up for the next one. It just feels like tv; not cinematic I guess. I kept waiting for real reveals... Red skull, or

Red skull, or an team of super soldier super villains. Nope. Last thing...Vision could have kicked the shit out of everyone. He could have ended the battle before it started. The whole movie was just a bunch of pulled punches and flashy cgi. It just gets old and I'm marveled out.

It's sad that Marvel can't figure out what to do with their villain problem because they get their heroes perfectly, and Civil War is another example of that. The battle at the airport was as much fun as any other scene I ever saw in a superhero franchise and the final battle was surprisingly emotional.

The problem is that Zemo was just ... there. It's true he didn't die but the films went through Red Skull, Arnim Zola, Baron Strucker and now Zemo, and what impression did they leave? No

No, Zemo was crap. There was no foundation for how he came by his information (or even the money to travel all over the world to complete his mission), and he was just a guy. The Avengers and all the world's governments were helpless in the face of a guy. Just stupid.

Also, if Tony Stark isn't there at the end to get him, which was extremely unlikely since Bucky was still framed for his crimes, I don't know how the rest of his plan unfolds. He got lucky, to say the least.

About as damn near to perfect as a superhero movie could ever be, in my opinion. Lived up to every sky-high expectation I had and then some. I rarely say this about movies these days considering how expensive they are, but I can't wait to shell out the bucks to see again.

I really don't understand this criticism for Daniel Bruhls villain. The movie is called 'civil war' and the movie gives us exactly that. Had the villain been given any more to do, then would we all be whining that this film only had a few moments of cap fighting Iron Man? The point of the movie was exactly what we got on screen and I think the Russo bros did a fantastic job with the run time and the balance of serious tones with gentle humour. Grade A work

Great... NOT perfect !
Crossbones is wasted, this is NOT Zemo and his plan is just ridiculous... 'James Bond's Villain' level ridiculous ! And the plot is very similar to BvS, whatever you want to admit it or not... Just a better execution and more fun.
Aside from that and a few other minor details, it was just non-stop 'huge smile on my face' !

That's too funny! I had the exact same reaction (even made the same comment before I read yours). This was the same problem as BvS (although Luthor was an infinitely better villain than Zemo). The difference was the humor and better sustained character arcs. Also, Panther and Spider-Man were done perfectly, and helped keep this movie from sliding into something less entertaining.

sweet airport fight

Loved it. The only comic I've ever read was this story line. I didn't care how they changed it from the comic. The movie was super entertaining. I didn't care about the typical bad guy issues because it was about this group fighting within themselves. I liked how one of the Russo brothers was the dead guy in the tub. Ant-Man and Spider-Man were excellent and the rest were their typical selves that we know.
I really enjoyed it big time.

Am i the only one that was dissapointed by the use of Baron Zemo? In the comics he was actually quite a formidable aponent for Captain America and he could actually fight. This guy hid behind some blast doors during the climax. It seems like they like making up these new characters and when they can't think of a name for them they just steel one from a random character in the canon. I guess besides that it was an okay movie.

Yeah, that or they're setting him up for even more villainy in the future. You'll notice he didn't die at the end like most Marvel baddies.

No, you weren't the only one. I walked out of the theater really looking forward to the new Spider Man and to Black Panther, but I'd be okay if this was the last Captain America film. Talk about joyless. . . a crippled Rhodie and most of the Avengers in jail? The government out to get superheroes because they can't stop suicide bombers from killing? They freaking stopped a bio-weapon from being taken to terrorists and it was never even mentioned!

They took an awesome character who saves people and is a real hero (literally, the guy everyone looks up to) and gave him one film to shine in, then stuck him in two where he was hiding from the public and fighting government forces out to get him. Both good films, but none of the joy or magic from his wealth of comic resources. Now we get one of his key villains turned into just some random dude with the same name (Mandarin anyone?). I thought it was a really well done movie, but other than the airport fight, could have been about Jason Bourne, not Steve Rodgers.

"Guy's remember that old movie?"

Loved that line and refrence when taking down Ant-man. Spiderman was perfect and his "Holy shit" had everyone laughing in our packed showing. Antman and Black Panther were amazing! Love the Bourne-like staircase fight with Cap and Soldier. Great movie. I don't know that I would call it best CBM ever that seems like hyperbole, but it is damn good!

Ant-Man and Spiderman owned. Black Panther was cool. I enjoyed it, but there is no new ground here. Entertaining with a good balance of action and humor? Sure. Best cbm ever? Not even close. Marvel has a huge and glaring villain issue and this movie more than proved it. 7/10

I have the feeling every new Marvel movie is called the greatest CBM of all time when it comes out. Happend with Iron Man 3 and AoU, but later when the first hype is gone people see it more rational. I reserve my final judgement until my second viewing (which will be on Blu-ray) because beside the things everybody mentions (Black Panther, Spider-Man, Ant-Man & the airport fight), the film didn't quite catch me. In fact it has many of the issues people ripped BvS apart for. Civil War was better

Civil War was better executed in many critical scenes and the humor and fight scenes cover up alot, but I'm baffled that no one seems to care for the flaws with this one and instead it is called one of the greatest or even THE greatest. Winter Soldier is superior in storytelling and I think the better of the two.
So while I wait for my second viewing to fully make up my mind, I doubt that Civil War will turn out to be my favorite Marvel movie.

I usually can't wait to get a second viewing, but this is the second marvel movie that I won't go back to the theater to see and I probably won't buy the blu-ray. I was bored with ant man and this movie just felt too staged with nothing really new to add.

See here is where I disagree, no one I know was saying that AOU or IM3 was the greatest comic book movie ever.I did hear that about the original Avengers, and I did hear that about The Winter Soldier but only those two in the present day mcu comic book movie world (since IM1). This for me quite possibly could be the best, but repeat viewings will be required.

Yeah, I walked out thinking that I could go back with friends because it was entertaining, but had no actual desire to go back and see it again. Without that airport fight I probably wouldn't have thought it was above average. It is a well made movie, but not a superhero film. It's missing everything that a superhero movie is supposed to be, and depended on audiences ignoring TONS of flaws to make it's overly-complicated plot work.

That plus the lamest villain in history. Literally a guy angry because someone else committed a terrorist act that killed his family, so he dedicated his life (and his magical unlimited resources) to proving Bucky killed Tony's parents. WTF???

Huh??

Did we watch the same film? I thought it was so disappointing. Winter Soldier was so tight and not a moment of wasted dialogue. This was more of Ultron, in that it was bloated, crammed too much in and ultimately did not go anywhere new. OOh they were fighting? Big deal, did anybody think they would not reconcile at the end? Let's face it, these characters are becoming stale, tired and the formula is losing its charm. The first Iron Man was superb. Avengers 2012 had so much magic. Now, it's just

Now, it's just a machine churning out disposable packages. Sorry, that's just how I see it. Surprised to see the love around here. Black Panther was cool, but interesting enough to warrant his own movie? I don't think so. Spider Man was ok, but better than Garfield? I don't think so.

Haha ya because they only introduced 3 new characters to the avengers, definitely more of the same. Losing charm? Compared to what, Andrew Garfield? Are you fucking serious? The guy bumbled his way through 2 shitty Sony films, thats why you are seeing Spider-Man in this movie in the first place.

I only agree with you on the Spider-Man. Felt like Michelangelo showed up in a Marvel movie.
Garfield was way better. I'm so sick of the little kid high school Spider-Man.

@JulestheBum I'm not sure I understand. You're sick of the little kid high school Spider-Man? When have we gotten that version? Comics and tv...sure. But, not in the films.
Unless you're already sick of the 20 minutes or so from "Civil War", I guess.

@ucfro, both Toby and Andrew's version started them in high school and right after graduation. What I'd like to see is Spider-Man at late 20's early 30's.

yeah...they were in high school . But, it most certainly wasn't the "little kid high school". Maguire and Garfield were closer to 30 than they were high school age. Tom Holland comes across as a the kid that the comics portray, IMO.
You are the first person I have ever heard wanting to see an older Spider-Man. I'd say, it will be awhile before they get there, if they ever do.

Amazing...It rocked!

I watched it in 3D first and then in 2D. My advice is if you don't have seats absolutely in front of the screen in middle of the row its jarring to watch in 3D. In that way 2D experience is much better.
The movie itself is stunning. The acting is great. The action is relentless and top class. One of the best action set pieces I have seen in a Marvel movie. Black Panther steals the show. His costume is just superb. It looked so organic and natural. And yes what everyone is saying is true. The

Although Ant Man is superb here I just wish they had more of him fighting in his tiny form. I may be in minority here but I actually loved the Zemo role. I liked that he was different than other previous shouting, screaming, scowling and threatening villains and yet he actually managed to inflict more damage directly on the avengers than any of them.
This movie absolutely requires that you have watched Ant-Man, Age of Ultron and Winter Soldier movies. Otherwise you may not be able to get some of the references and feel confused. Some guys who were sitting behind me in the hall had not seen Ant Man movie, so his entry was very confusing for them since they did not get the reference between him and falcon.

It Rocked!

We saw it in 2D and were glad we did.
The movie hit all the right notes and left lots to be resolved; Shakespeare would have been proud of the plot, and of the mixing of drama and humor. Scarlet Witch and Ant Man were awesome in their roles. I can hardly wait to see part 2. The setup for the next film was perfect.

Powerful, emotional, and action packed. The staircase scene with Cap and Buck was the best thing in the film. This is the Bourne Ultimatum of Marvel films. I am positively and geekily overwhelmed from the film. Can't wait for my second viewing.

It was good and probably warranted a 7/10 or 8/10 for a rating. I'm more of a DC fan and really can't get invested in the character of Captain America. When they brought Cap into this universe, they forgot to explain where all the altruism in his character comes from, (or maybe they didn't care/think it was important). We know why Iron Man and some of the others do what they do, but Cap was a righteous guy from the get-go without the slightest insight into his motivations. He has seemingly no

We know why Iron Man and some of the others do what they do, but Cap was a righteous guy from the get-go without the slightest insight into his motivations. He has seemingly no flaws and ends up on the right end of every argument or debate every time. Honestly, it's a little boring and annoying and it makes it harder to route for him and his team even though they're on the side we're meant to sympathize with the most. The best thing you can do with a character like that is to surround him with more interesting characters in interesting scenarios, so props to Marvel for doing that.

Secondly, it's funny how this film had some really morose moments in it that seemed to parallel some of the darker moments and tones found in BVS, yet only one film takes a critical beating for it? For all of the,"Marvel is more fun," hooplah, this film didn't make the audience laugh very much compared to prior Marvel efforts I've seen in the theater. It was more serious because the story demanded it be so, which was also the case with BVS.
Outside of the airport sequence, the usual cotton candy tropes of Marvel's visual story-telling were mostly absent and replaced by scenes of moral debates, character drama, and suspense. Tony Stark speaking to Spider-man and Giant Ant-man were about as light as this film got. The rest was surprisingly heavier and that really added to my enjoyment of it. It was a good change of pace.

As for the whole "Tom Holland is the best Spidey ever!" hype-train that left the station nearly three weeks ago, I'll say this; let's not go ape-shit just yet. Is he good? Absolutely! Is he the best ever? Well, honestly he wasn't given very much to do here, so I have no idea how I'm going to feel about him after a full-length film. We'll see.

The other new hero, Black Panther, also fairs very well in the film. I can't say he really has a lot to do here either besides chase Bucky around, but the part is well-acted and we're given a glimpse into what his character is all about that has me interested in his future.

As for Zemo, I didn't really have a problem with him and was sort of happy when he stuck it to Cap from behind the glass in Siberia. Screw Thanos, this guy beat the Avengers without throwing a single punch! Cap was all indignant that a man with no super abilities or technology bested him because of his superior intelligence, hehe. He was the first Marvel villain in this universe to actually make an impact.

Well...I guess Crossbones sort of did too, but there's no denying he was wasted here, especially after his set-up at the end of Winter Soldier.

Not bad. Didn't do too well of a job balancing the seriousness and the humor. Didn't know what kinda movie it wanted to be. The big airport fight felt goofy with all the joking. Not much felt like it needed to be taken seriously.

Are you kidding? You didn't think they balanced the serious with the goofiness? You just don't understand the characters. If they all acted like the retarded Superman or 4ever Alone Batman from the shitty BvS movie then none of the characters would have been acting like they always have in previous movies. Spidey being starstruck while fighting was AMAZING and very much like his character. Iron Man quipping back and forth is what his character does. The serious tone came at a perfect time,

The serious tone came at a perfect time, Rhodes got hurt. Stark finds out Bucky killed his parents. Shit got serious when it needed to get serious. That defines a good balance. Nobody was out for blood until the final scene with Stark vs Bucky. There was no need for drama in the airport scene. No need for brooding that you seem to oh so love.

fully agreed. too damn comical for my tastes. absolutely did not know when to take itself seriously. The last fight should have felt like real stakes were at hand. I didn't care for the out come. just wanted to see a bunch of characters do cool stuff, otherwise, I really did not care, because the writers did not care. They wanted to have a campy outting on that scene and got it, like the first Avengers movie...had the same issue. The Ultron fight kinda took itself a lil more seriously.

Nope. Having had some distance from seeing the film last week I have to say it was perfectly balanced and honoured who each of the characters were. Liked that they were pulling their punches at the airport because, of course they would. These guys have been put in opposition but at heart they don't hate each other enough to get too brutal. Had a kind of, 'Are we really doing this?' vibe that felt true to me. That is until.....

So for a movie called "Civil War" you like that they pulled punches? What's the point? It should have been called "mild family dispute at thanksgiving" instead. What did we learn from this? Nothing. What is at stake now? Nothing. Thanos will show up and everyone will show up with a quick cute line about where they were and super team assemble. It's so bland and popcorny.

As an Ensemble/Avengers movie this one takes the cake. Ant-Man and Spider-Man were great. I didn't really feel the stakes in this one though. Crossbones was a throw away at the beginning. Zemo's plot to get them to fight each other was as eye rolling as Lex Luthor's in BVS. Bucky and Sam's exchanges were a highlight. People say they gave each character their own arc, but honestly I didn't really get a sense about Hawkeye's reasons for joining the fight. Winter Soldier is still my 10/10 Marvel

(Love the Russos bringing in cameos from Community. Looks like Dean Pelton from Greendale is now Dean at MIT. Moving up in the world)

Critics have been a little hypocritical here. They call this a 9/10 and BvS a 3/10 when this is movie is easily 8/10 and BvS is 6.5 or 7/10.

Zemo's plot was genius. He didn't want to be some grand villain, he didn't want to be a ruler of a free world or a copycat of a hero only evil. You are overlooking the fact that Zemo WON!. He did what he set out to do and the Avengers are crippled forever by his actions. We finally got a villain that had an original idea and you poopoo him. He gave the heroes a reason to fight and mistrust eachother. His reveal to Tony was the most crippling thing anyone could ever do to him.

It's a good Marvel movie, but it feels more like an Avengers story than a Captain America story, Steve & Bucky's bromance notwithstanding. I'd rank it easily above Age of Ultron but still a notch below Winter Soldier.

It was a Cap movie, how can you say it wasn't? The entire plot revolved around Captain America. Avengers movies focus more on the rise of their villain and the team taking that villain down. This movie was the story of how Captain America saves his friend, defies the Avengers, loses Peggy, fights for his own agenda. Everyone else was just in the story because you can't do anything anymore without including at least some of the other heroes in the universe.

Because the movie deals more with the fallout of Age of Ultron than anything else. It's an in-between movie that sets up the state of the MCU for Infinite War. Tony Stark manages to make everything be about him, again. Yes, I think Zemo is a well crafted villain that the MCU sorely need, but he is ultimately just a means to an end. Steve and Bucky's relationship as the movie's driving plot tend to get sidelined in some of the movie's big moments to give the audience their 'wow' moments in watching Ant-Man or Spider-Man. Sure, it is arguably still a Captain America movie, but certainly less so than Winter Soldier.

Civil War kicks ass

This is what every Avengers fan was looking for a straight up war! My favorite scene was the airport fight and Giant Man stole the show. Spider-Man was over rated and in my opinion and boring. I was team Captain all the way, can't wait for the next one. I think the Captain America series has been the best Marvel has produced out of all movies.

Massive disappointment

Captain America movies have been the best movies marvel put out so far. This is a muddled , convoluted mess that is only saved by Tom Holland and Paul Rudd. Spiderman was perfect. So many issues . Thought it over overnight, and was genuinely disappointed.. Zemo was useless, potentially a great villain to be used in the future. Destroyed. Thought it over overnight, and was genuinely disappointed.. Zemo was useless, potentially a great villain to be used in the future. Destroyed. Everyone who is saying this was great probably thought age of Ultron was great. Like that movie everyone will change their tune in six months. Without spiderman and Ant man scenes this bordered on a dumpster fire.

While there's some hyperbole in your response, I do agree that this was a vapid attempt at drama. The damn Avengers Assemble cartoon pulled its punches less than this. I was so upset with the airport scene because of the hype. Nobody really got hurt and if Vision wanted to, he can killed them all in a split second. It was just to sugary. No substance. I was waiting for some big surprise... Maybe red skull would return, maybe Cap would die, maybe those 5 super soldier badasses could have wrecked

Just more unreal dialog with rubber cgi characters bouncing off each other. Meh.

It was pretty great. The action scenes were excellent and that airport climactic fight lives up to it's hype. I have to agree with people that call this new Spiderman the best we've seen. I thought he was fantastic and can't wait to see more of him. Likewise, I thought Black Panther was pretty great as well. I love his fighting style and watching him brawl was a lot of fun. Can't wait for his solo stuff. I do think that the story wasn't quite as interesting as it maybe could have been. I never

I never felt like the characters were ever in any grave danger and there were a few plot points I felt were there mainly just for convenience (Really? Stark's the only one who knows Peter Parker is Spiderman?). But they're minor criticisms. This was an excellent film.

Loved that Zemo added something new. Hoping he'll get the Thunderbolts going now that Ross and Ross are in control.

@stevemoto Because Zemo's plan was zo ridiculous. He kept asking about the mission in 1991, like he already knew what happened then. So if he already knew what the mission was about, why keep asking about it? Why not immediately retrieve the conveniently taped camera footage from Siberia?
Since Bucky didn't do bad things anymore, it was probably Zemo who set up Crossbones to raid the hospital in Lagos. Because of an incident there the Sokovia Accords is made and will be signed in Vienna. That

Because of an incident there the Sokovia Accords is made and will be signed in Vienna. That gives Zemo the opportunity to bomb the UN place so there will be a manhunt for Bucky, who when he is arrested will be interrogated by a psychologist he can replace and can activate Bucky because he send an EMP to the electric company in Germany. And he did all that because he knew, like was absolutely sure, there was a videotape of Bucky killing Tony Straks parents and he would be able to show Tony Stark this, by luring him, and Bucky and Captain America, to Siberia. And he lures them under false pretenses, because they think he's going to activate the other Winter Soldiers. That's some crazy ass planning. That's Skyfall level of orchestrating events.

Brilliant

Brilliant film. Easily top 5 best marvel films to date as the airport fight sequence alone warrants that title. Of course there are some nitpicks ie (I find it amazing that cap and Sharon can make their way from London to Vienna on the SAME day.. Or the fact that ZEMO was surely confident that stark will somehow find his way to cap during the finale) but those nitpicks can easily be overlooked with brilliant story telling. Can't wait for Infinity Wars!

Zemos plan relied totally on the fact that he hoped that the UN would randomly ratify 110+ countries into creating an accord at a specific moment which would then lead to the world leaders meeting in a random place when they would agree upon the accords allowing him to bomb said particular place framing the Winter Soldier, hoping that the Winter Soldier was somehow in the same vicinity let alone continent, hoping that once he was caught he would be transported to any one of the many secured locations hoping that they would pick the right psychologist to interview him while intricately creating a random EMP bomb (instead of just a satchel charge or something) to bomb the correct power grid that led to the random military housing compound where they were holding the Winter Soldier and hoping that no one questioned that he looked NOTHING like the real psychologist and would take his word for it and let him in to interview him without searching him and not finding a random Hydra code book for him to read from. All the while hoping the Avengers would be torn apart by their ideologies based on the accords that he would have no idea what they would really entail.

All I can think of while the whole thing came together was Zemo acting like this. [link]

Yes i know movies are always a matter of convenience, but this one stretched it almost beyond suspension of disbelief.

The Zemo plot was easily the weakest part of the film. But it wasn't really the thing that gets left behind. It was the Avenger's actions alone that dictated treaty signing. The Zemo plot wouldn't have even been possible if not for the other countries wanting the Sokovia Accords. What I take away from the film is a broken Avengers and what that will mean for future films.

Every character had many moments to shine. The relationships were just planted, and I want to them grow. Tony and Peter, Bucky and Falcon, Ant-Man and Cap, Scarlet and Vision, all of those relationships were terrific. Especially Tony and Peter. I really want to see that father and son kind of feel to grow. Everything was perfect to me. I thought the villain was perfect too. There was no major villain fight. He knew he wouldn't be able to beat an Avenger, so he put them up against each other. He wasn't trying to gain power or steal a suit. He was consumed by vengeance. Which was somewhat of a metaphorical underlining of the movie. The film surprised me in many ways. It was totally not what I expected, but still turned out incredible.
9/10 for me.

Sorry that boring dialog and shaky cam "action" scenes don't do it for me.

This is all ignoring the fact that the whole civil war would be avoided if people would just communicate effectively. A similar critique I heard about BvS.

Ironman has mommy issues... just like Batman.

The main bad guy's whole plan is to get the main characters to destroy each other and almost works until it doesn't... hmmm. Yup. BvS.

At least Captain America 3 is funnier than BvS.

Completely agree. It's a shiny, happy turd; but it's still a turd. There was just nothing new and everything was just too convenient; too easy. Just more of the same. Black widow is a human and should be either dead or in a hospital for 6 months after the beating she took. Rhodes should be hamburger inside that suit. Vision would have sliced most them right in half with one blast. Where was he? Too convenient. Too much like a cartoon. I'm sure it will sell a lot of toys

I'm really looking forward to Phase 3 more than any other Phase that has come before, and I hope Guardians, Thor, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and The Avengers live up to a new standard, but I am doubtful this will be the case.

DCsucksballssayswhat?

Now that is how you introduce new characters, pit hero vs hero and tell a story. Snyder needs to go crawl under a desk and get hit by a missile from 1960s Soviet Union. They did an amazing job with this movie. They had ACTUAL REASONS to fight. You saw the good and bad of both sides. It wasn't just some retarded kid saying "I've got your mother, now go kill this other hero who has had no screen time even though his name is in the movies title". Nobody was used as just a tool to make the story

They introduced Black Panther AND Spiderman, gave us a script that had emotions to it and made the characters all seem badass. They did that in 6 minutes less than BvS took to destroy everything good about their characters and the arcs they took from the comics.

I thought it was brilliant. I don't know if it was the best Marvel film thus far (it's a close three way tie between Avengers, Winter Soldier, and Civil War), but it definitely ranks up there with the best of them. The movie is just non stop action from the first frame to the last and is just a pure, fun thrill ride throughout.

The movie is just non stop action from the first frame to the last and is just a pure, fun thrill ride throughout.

The whole cast did a phenomenal job with their respected, iconic roles with the best parts being the new comers with Boseman as Black Panther, and Holland as Spider Man. Despite the juggernaut storyline and roster of characters in this, every character in this had their heroic moment to shine and prove why they're worthy of being in the MCU at this point. After viewing this film, I'm MORE than comfortable with the Russo's handling directing duties for both Infinity War films and handiling an even bigger roster of characters and utilizing them properly and effectively.

And speaking of the Russo's, the action scenes in this were incredible. The fight scenes between everyone involved (especially between Cap vs Stark, Black Panther vs Bucky, and Bucky vs Stark) were all astonishing to watch and really set set the bar high in who was the best superhero in the MCU to win and handle themselves in a hand to hand fight. And the action sequences were really shot to perfection as well. The airport sequence has to be one of the best comic book scenes ever to grace the big screen and had so many cool moments from everyone. Best bits being Ant Man's actions and lines, Spider-Man joining in on the fighting, the reactions and witty banter amongst everyone and the banter between Bucky and Falcon. This whole scene is worth the price of admission alone and is probably the best part of the film.

As far as the villain goes, I actually thought this was one of the stronger ones of the MCU. I liked his motivations for why and what he did and very much enjoyed the turmoil the villain was trying to create for each one of the Avengers. I thought Bruhl did a terrific job for the screen time he was given and definitely left his mark.

And every scene between Stark and Rogers was great and filled with intensity and the story did a great job of making each character right and wrong in their own perspectives and moral code and not making it one sided; especially towards the ending which at this point has everything out in the open amongst the core of the characters who are still involved at that point. I will say that my audience was gasping and heartbroken during the ending and really built up the final fight that much more. It was also great to see a much more different side of Tony this side around; Downey Jr is a brilliant actor and was given a great opportunity to really display numerous sides and shades of Tony than in previous Iron Man appearances and films. From charming, and cocky, to broken, remorseful, confused, pissed, and doubtful. Just a great solo character arc for Tony alone.

But great film with the standouts being Black Panther, Spider Man, and Ant Man and definitely proves that Marvel is still running stronger than ever and is at the top of their game. The ending really ends on a great way in how everyone is going to come back together (and agreeably get along) to fight Thanos in Infinity Wars. Should be a hell of a reunion.

Bring on Doctor Strange!

My biggest worry, going in, with Civil War was the extended cast. It has been proven time and time again how disastrous it can turn out when you add too many characters. After seeing Civil War the other day I have much more confidence in the Russo brothers heading into Infinity War. Great acting, some of the best action scenes I've seen and every character getting a small moment to shine. Go see it, it will be well worth the money.

Hats off to the Russos, they've come a long way

There was so much going on in that movie, it is incredible that the Russo's could make it work so well. Parker, T'Challa and Lang were simply a delight. Bringing on the John Wick maestro's to help with fight choreography was clutch. This is the reason we go to movies, people.

This was, simply put, stellar. Everyone had awesome moments, and Spidey was proof that Marvel should have the rights to all of their characters. If Fox is smart, they'll look at this and strike a deal for the FF and X-Men to show up in the future.

Couldn't agree more. But I would rather see Fantastic Four join the MCU first since X-Men is doing just fine for what they're doing and Fantastic Four has the more compelling villains (Dr Doom, Galactus) that I would want to see join the MCU.

And if that were to happen, I would love to see Brad Bird or Jon Favreau direct the first Fantastic Four film.
