Will Hugh Jackman return for Wolverine 3?

04.30.2014by:

While it wont be long before we see Weapon X go berserker in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the newest issue of SFX has a nifty interview with Hugh Jackman where they talk up what might be in store for Wolverine.

When discussing the future of the character, Jackman says:

I don’t know yet. We’re talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did another one I’m 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me.

While Jackman reprising the role for a third Wolverine seems a given, it's not a done deal just yet.

In regards to him returning:

If the script is as good (as THE WOLVERINE)? Hm. I don’t know if that will get me across the line, man. I think it has to be better. I can still see where we can improve on the last one. I love the intimacy of that story, I liked the small stuff, I liked that it was a little unexpected. I don’t want to get into specifics, because it just upsets people, but there are certain parts of that story where I felt we were predictable. And I don’t think you need to do that with Wolverine. What’s exciting is that you can make it a more interior story, and people actually prefer that. And that was good to show and convince everyone – especially everyone who greenlights the movies!

One thing I really respect about Hugh Jackman is that despite the fact he was a last-minute replacement in the first film (I wonder what Dougray Scott is up to these days . . . ), Jackman completely loves and owns the character of Wolverine.  He's embraced it about as fully as I've seen any actor embrace a character.  No one really sets out to make a bad film, and Jackman acknowledges the mistakes made in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE and THE WOLVERINE, in hopes that they can learn from them and be a part of a truly great story involving the character.

I hope he gets his chance.  The man's come a long way!

In the meantime, you check out Hugh Jackman alongside Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and a whole slew of others in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST on May 23, 2014.

I love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but I understand that one day he will need to be recast. Hopefully, 20th Century Fox will recast him with a good actor.

Yeah he should do it! But he's also right that it needs to be better than the last two.

It would be cool to see them do one more movie. Personally I think if Hugh Jackman is going to retire after that, they should take a page out of Marvel comics Playbook and kill him off. Just retire the character altogether. Either that or do A variation of Old Man Logan.

They are kind of stuck on which story to go towards. Essentially Singer has timelined everything since the beginning and I don't think there's many gaps left to fill with a story. I think they should really show some world war 2 snippets on how Wolverine and Sabertooth defeated Omega Red. Bring back Liev Schreiber because he's the only one left alive that once helped Logan defeat him. Bring Omega Red in the modern day storyline where Wolvie and Sabertooth have to once again defeat him. Possibly

I will always pay to see Jackman as Wolverine no matter how old he gets. Hopefully he'll have one more Wolverine and one more X-Men movie in him.

If they follow the recent announcement of the "Death of Wolverine" upcoming series about killing off Wolverine, that could be a fitting end and an easy out for Hugh Jackman.

The Wolverine was a very solid comic book film and a vast improvement over Origins as we know (although they should've left the ninja massacre in the film the way it is on the special edition blu ray...that was amazing!) Mangold did a great job and although the third act feels like something we've seen before they're headed in the right direction. Gimme one more balls to the wall go around Hugh! Me wants it! Also get him in the suit at least once...please!!!!

It's been mentioned already by Noble_enk, but I'd love to see them do a "last" Wolverine story with Old Man Logan, even if it's not exactly like the comics. In a perfect world, it would be great if they waited five to ten years from now when Jackman is in his fifties, and let Darren Aronofsky cut loose with his R-rated version of Wolverine as a final send-off to the character before a new actor steps in. But given how much of a cash cow the X-films are, I tend to think Fox would sooner re-cast

But given how much of a cash cow the X-films are, I tend to think Fox would sooner re-cast the role and keep cranking out films, rather than take their time and give Jackman and the fans a "proper" Wolverine film. Because we live in a corporate world and not a perfect world, I'll wager a fiver that they do one more Wolverine flick that starts out promising, but then throws in a really daft plot element, whose only service to the plot is to sell toys.

Just Copy DISNEY MARVEL. Just like everyone was trying to mimic THE AVENGERS, they should try and mimic CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, story wise and most definately action wise. All I can think about for some reason while watching CAP 2 was: Why the fuck in 20 years of Batman films have we not seen him move like this. I mean, in the comics, CAP, BATS and WOLVIE are so agile, but on film, BATMAN moves like a ROBOT and WOLVERINE most of the time justs runs at people whlie screaming and

P.s Wolvy (Hugh) looks like a couch potato in that pic from X1 compared to the Wolvy from Wolverine movie era.
One thing about the Origins series is atleast he got the look right except for the height but then again I never liked the fact that wolvy is very short in the comics.

I definitely want to see Hugh in one last Wolverine film, especially if James Mangold is directing again. Mangold and Jackman made a great film last time they worked together, so I know they can make another quality Wolverine movie.

I want a 3rd one. The first one was shit but Hugh pulled the looked atleast. Second one was better than the first one but I hated they changed the story and the time period and the robot samurai and it wasn't aggressive either. I want the 3rd one to be really savage and vicious and that needs a director who can do that and yet I want some drama. I doubt they'll do the Old Man Logan cause it has the Avengers which is the real Marvel. Do a story with maybe either X-23 and or Daken. and then

FOX will gain respect from audience for giving back Wolvy, Fans mind will be blown by seeing Wolvy in the marvel produced Avengers and the world will be a better place.

-I think Jackman should have a hand in writing the script, he has the highest investment of the character at this point and seems concerned about what fans think.
-Reel it back like the first 20 minutes of the wolverine.

You know, The Wolverine was so bad, and I enjoyed it. There was some things I wasn't happy with, (Silver Samurai, the claws thing) but it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. If he does another Wolverine movie, I think the Weapons Plus program should be explored more, but without the goofiness of Origins. Intorduce Omega Red, introduce or hint at X-23. But don't overload it with mutants, even if its just cameos.

Enjoyed both solo Wolverine films and the last one was a HUGE improvement over the first, but I still think that they could make a better film for the character. In a perfect world, the film would be rated R and have this last flick be bloody and violent as hell.

When the character does eventually get recast and the franchise gets rebooted, I think the Jon Bernthal would make for an excellent Wolverine.

The X-men films are basically Wolverine and friends so I wouldn't be that bothered if there wasn't a third standalone Wolverine movie
