Will the new JJ Abrams television series be the next Lost or the next Alcatraz?

05.14.2012

We are at that time of year when the networks announce which shows are getting cancelled, which are getting renewed, and what new series we can get excited about for the next season. Sometimes the shows live up to the hype and sometimes they just crash and burn (AWAKE, ALCATRAZ, TERRA NOVA, etc).

As a confirmed member of the Church of Abrams, I tend to give anything with the JJ seal of approval the benefit of at least viewing the pilot. But, as of late, shows that bear his name are about as quality as those that say "from executive producer Steven Spielberg."

NBC just unveiled their new fall shows and, aside from the Hannibal Lecter series, JJ Abrams REVOLUTION piqued my interest the most.

Plot: Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why?

Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down, the lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?

On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman's life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously - and unbeknownst to her - had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

Sounds very badass to me. Featuring BREAKING BAD supervillain Giancarlo Esposito and TWILIGHT alum Billy Burke, REVOLUTION could be the next big genre series on television.

Check out the trailer for the Jon Favreau directed pilot.

There are definitely some cheezy moments in the trailer that remind me a bit too much of TERRA NOVA crossed with THE HUNGER GAMES, but I am definitely putting this on my DVR to at least test drive.

What do you think of the trailer for REVOLUTION?

It reminds me of Jericho. I loved that show and it didn't get any love from the network. I hope this does better

I'll give it a chance though I totally agree with most of the implausibilities pointed out by my fellow commenters

So plants can grow on the streets in a city.....That makes perfect sense.

Their premise better have a really good explanation.

This just seems stupid. How the hell can "electricity" stop? I mean, you can make a battery using wire and a grapefruit! Anything biological uses electricity, even breathing requires a redox reaction. Why are we still breathing JJ? WHY?!

Could be some kind of self-perpetuating EMP. As far as I know that doesn't kill humans because the electrical charge we produce doesn't involve metal and there is the fact that the human nervous system is far more complex than any circuit... just a thought

I think Abrams should take a "break" and concentrate more on quality. Really examine what worked with Lost and try to recapture that magic, I'm sure as hell need something to fill that void.

BTW Person of Interest is all sorts of awesome... I would say manly the casting and brother Nolan behind the script.

Not much of a premise really.

If anybody else came to a network with this premise "What if everything stopped working?" they'd be ignored, but since it JJ Abrams of course he gets a show.

Like his other stuff it all comes down to the reveal, how many seasons will it be before we find out the big surprise and will it actually be a surprise or a big letdown?
It doesn't interest me in the least...and besides for 15 years without any power whatsoever everyone looks really clean and manicured.

LOST, Fringe, Cloverfied, MI3, Star Trek, Person of Interest, Super 8....
Looking at the above track record, I am going to give this new show a chance. JJ Abrams has been a revolution himself on TV with great shows.
I have left out Alias and Felicity as I never got a chance to catch them on TV back in the days, but wll sure be watching someday.
I know there have been some failures - Undercovers, Alcatraz, etc but there are more Positive points than Negative ones in JJ's career. I haven't

And Person of Interest is such a damn good seres. It just shows he has still got That TV Thing going even when he is doing more movie projects nowadays.

I'm really sad that Alcatraz got canceled. I really want to know how the inmates/guards came back. Sad.

Interesting premise, but I have a tendency to pick apart shows like this, so I hope they have a logical explanation as to why they can't generate electricity. It doesn't make sense as to why a simple generator can't create electricity when it all comes down to science. And you can't just take away science.

I have a feeling that this show will go the way of Flash Forward, where they have an interesting premise but can't create a story that is engaging.

I absolutely loved LOST in its entirety, but sadly Abrams has yet to nail the concept that made LOST work in his other shows. There's just something missing in all of them. Either they share the same "clean" look, or similar predictable concepts, or lack chemistry between characters. I'm staring to think that LOST was awesome because it had Damien and Carlton in the mix, not just Abrams. I may sound blasphemous to some, but his post-LOST shows just lack that certain spark. Intriguing concepts,

I actually liked Alcatraz and Terra Nova. Is Alcatraz cancelled? I liked Happy Town too! They cancelled it too early!! The actors seem a little too clean in this for me, but we'll see.

Meh

Great premise, nice production but all of the actors are too pampered and clean. If the world lost electricity you really think we're all gonna look like models?

Maybe not models, but everyone would certainly be a lot more fit because they're not sitting on their asses watching bad tv

I think it looks pretty damn good and I'm very selective about what TV shows I invest my time with. However I do always love a good dystopian thriller. I just wish they hadn't revealed what looks like a major characters allegiance in the preview.

I've always had an interest in something like this. A what if scenario where electricity just disappears. I will probably check it out. The trailer does a good job selling the pilot, at least. The problem lies in the future. Can the show maintain the quality of the pilot for the entire first season? The second season? I can see this kind of show lasting for a long time, as it's subject matter warrants a huge world with hundreds of stories. It just needs great writers and producers to carry it

As much as I like Abrams, network tv just keeps getting worse. All they care about are medical or law shows and reality programs. There's a few good to be found on the big 4 networks, otherwise most the better programs belong to HBO, FX, AMC, etc.

I've wondered about this premise for a while. There's talk that China has a virus that could do just that (or some lesser manifestation).

I'm with ccapel that there is this tendency to over-stylize everything. But this does look like something I'd at least watch the pilot to.

I'm glad to see Giancarlo Esposito really getting his due, even if it is in TV land.

I think the problem lies in the execution, not the premise.

I'm getting pretty sick of 98% of the characters looking like super models with the one overweight, dopey guy for comic relief.

Seems like Hollywood has a hard time making the people in these kinds of post-apocalyptic worlds not annoying. It's like they're all completely aware of how cool they're trying to be. Enough with the brooding at camera and cheesy one-liners. Just from that few minutes I've already decided I hate

And what's with all the choreographed sword fighting. So the power goes out and suddenly a guy is able to take on 10 dudes at once with a machete? Please.

Okay, one thing to clear...

AWAKE is one of the best new shows this season. I just saw the 11th episode last week, and I've totally blown away by it. Guess how much I was heartbroken & disappointed when it got cancelled this week. That was what a thinking man's thriller should be, with great character, bizarre and interesting premise and most of all, a mindblowing fantastic performance from the always great Jason Isaacs. And now thats all gone down the drain.

So, now there's another high-concept serial drama on the works. After LOST, there was FLASHFORWARD, then THE EVENT, then ALCATRAZ & AWAKE....and now this REVOLUTION. You know that all these show got in common? They ALL had supercool concepts and plot summaries, and they've all canceled after the first season. So I'll try to contain my excitement till this new show gets a renewal for a 2nd season.

I'm sorry if I came off as cranky or a cynic. I guess after the heartburn I've gotten from AWAKE, I'm more than a bit sceptic about any new high-concept show for now.

Well... essentially Lost was about the characters and that was wrapped up rather nicely except for the man in black's name... but, a lot of things were answered in one way or another. Tell us something that wasn't answered?

Watched this last night

Thought it was a great idea and a good looking movie...until I saw it was a tv show. Looks really good, but they better have a good solid idea as to how long the show is going to run so they know exactly when to flick the lights back on. However, if they have the lights flick on at the end of Season one...imagine the storylines they could produce with actual electricity after 15 years without it. Actually liking this more and more now.

Giancarlo Esposito is a great actor. He was brilliant in Breaking Bad. This looks pretty cool. Mind you I thought that about Terra Nova and those thoughts only got me through a half dozen eps. Ive just started watching Fringe and freakin rocks so I trust JJ. I'll definitely be giving this a go.
