William Fichtner joins Independence Day 2; two more sequels planned

05.29.2015

While William Fichtner doesn't get to receive top billing as often as I'd like, the man can always be counted upon to provide solid and memorable supporting roles. Deadline reports that Fichtner's next role is one that could expand greatly; he's set to join the ever-growing cast of the sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY in the role of a top general.

While not much more is known about William Fichtner's role, Deadline also mentions that Fichtner will have a larger presence in the two planned sequels to INDEPENDENCE DAY 2. It had previously been reported that two sequels to the original were in the works, but later Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin decided just to focus on the one film saying “let’s just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said you know what, let’s scale it down. Let’s first make sure that it works for everyone.” It seems as though that attitude may have changed as it now looks like we could be getting three sequels in total. That's an awful lot of aliens getting punched in the face.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is set to open on June 24, 2016.

I can understand one sequel, but I think more after will be a bit overkill. You don't want to become another Pirates of the Carribean.

Yeah, I feel like I'm leaning more toward KcM's position on this. ID4 was a very 90s blockbuster, treating the aliens more like a natural disaster, keeping the fighting small and the set pieces big and disconnected, filling the downtime with lots of comedy. Now, there's plenty of room to go in all sorts of directions with the story, but I'm worried that if they're trying to recapture what worked back then, they're gonna end up making something nobody today is interested in seeing..

ID4 More

If the story the filmmakers are cooking up can support three more films then I'm happy to receive 3x the entertainment. It is a shame that these sequels weren't made closer to the original, but anyone who would bad mouth a movie before it even has a trailer is an idiot. Whether or not Independence Day can deliver a solid follow-up 20 years later will be determined upon its release and not before.

I really can't see two more sequels after this upcoming initial one.

And Fichtner is the man. My favorite role of his is from Prison Break. Really elevated the show with his presence.

how can you not see two more sequels if you havent seen a picture or a trailer or a movie for that fact.

Thats like saying (without reading or even ever hearing about lord of the rings)

Two hobbits travel to mordor to destroy a ring

Well I Cant see that going past one movie.

no, not a terrible argument because you don't know what the full plot of ID42 is. So you don't know how they will expand on it to create a new trilogy. Point Match. Conman Walks out of Thunderdome. Skynet lies bloody and ruined.

^^ Point Match? lol Hurt Butt.... Butthurt :-/ If you don't agree with em your argument is invalid. Independence Day has SO much potential for 3 more sequels. I mean c'mon, the first movie had SO much mythology and background and just all round great ideas to be expanded upon. Ahem, ANYWAYS... let's see how the first sequel does, 2 more after that sounds ridiculous, especially coming from Roland Emmerich.

Love this guy

But the time for Independence Day has passed. Let it lie in the past, and for God's sake don't try to make even more.
