Sin City 2 off? May. 30, 2007

Apparently, even though I remember some time ago reporting that Robert Rodriguez had shown Smokin' Joe Carnahan a teaser or some sort for his upcoming project SIN CITY 2, the film is actually still in limbo. Michael Madsen (RESERVOIR DOGS) told Premiere Magazine that:

"They haven't shot it yet. I don't know if they ever will. I am not sure [about] the franchise. I think the Grindhouse thing didn't kind of work out... I don't know what effect that is going to have on making Sin City 2"

He adds that the only reason he did his small role in the first film "was because Robert Rodriguez said that if I took that little part I would get a bigger role in the sequel, that Bob would have more to do in the sequel."

Well that sucks. No two ways about that, it's bad news. I had been under the impression things were moving smoothly, especially with the aforementioned teaser, and with those casting rumors of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie/Rachel Weisz running wild. I'm not really sure why GRINDHOUSE would impact Rodriguez' future projects, the guy has made tons of money in the past, surely GRINDHOUSE's failure wasn't so monumental as to undo all the good work he'd done in the past? Here's hoping it isn't...

Extra Tidbit: In the first SIN CITY, Adrien Brody originally auditioned for the role of Jackie Boy.

…can anyone say [link] Revenue? Grindhouse hasn’t even opened in any of the other major world markets. Oh yeah, and it will be as two films rather than one. I’m sure EACH will scoop up a few tens of millions more during their overseas releases before all is said and done. Thinkaboutit.

If this is true, it would suck, but I highly doubt it. Bob does indeed get a much larger (ableit crudely-SHOT) role in the second one, so I don't know why Madsen would be going around saying this.

The Spirit would certainly be something worth to check out while waiting for Sin City 2.

Isn't Madsen also the one who said Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler were going to be in the Tarantino WW2 movie, along with Stallone?

another notable item that makes this story sound like it's loaded with even more bullshit is that Madsen told Premiere Magazine this news, which is extremely odd considering they went out of business earlier this year with their last produced mag hitting newsstands in april. so wtf? unless Premiere is somehow still functioning but just not producing magazines.

Madsen wouldn't know. Rotten Tomatoes has an article where Frank Miller was saying that both him and Rodriguez are doing one other project BEFORE Sin City 2, so we just won't see it for a bit, still getting made.

Let's see here... "300" has made over $441 million worldwide against a $65 million budget, and it's based on a Frank Miller graphic novel. The first "Sin City" -- again based on Frank Miller material and co-directed by Rodriguez and Miller -- made over $158 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. Come on. Like "Grindhouse," which Rodriguez was only half responsible for (and the better half, so I've heard) would halt "Sin City 2" from getting made.

Robert may have to go back and do some studio films to help build up his cash flow again. He'll be back to Sin City before we know it.
