Monty Python musical Spamalot getting movie adaptation

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL is one of the most beloved comedy classics of all time and one that remains as endlessly quotable as it is timeless. As much of a classic as the movie is, the Broadway musical based on the movie, SPAMALOT, has achieved its own level of acclaim and notoriety. Now, it’s time for the stage romp to make its own way to the silver screen, and now 20th Century Fox is fast-tracking a film version into development.

Deadline got the scoop that Fox is working hard on bringing the Broadway smash to theaters with Monty Python’s Eric Idle (who also wrote the stage musical) writing the script, and Casey Nicholaw directing. Idle will also produce, with casting set to kick off soon with a production start eyed for spring 2019.

SPAMALOT debuted in 2004 and was an instant success, earning 14 Tony nominations in 2005, winning three for Best Musical, Best Director (Mike Nichols) and Best Featured Actress (Sara Ramirez). 

Nicholaw is having a great year, having just directed the musical version of MEAN GIRLS for the stage, and earning a Tony nomination for Best Director and Best Choreographer. He also has hits like BOOK OF MORMON and ALADDIN under his belt and worked as a choreographer on the original production of SPAMALOT. Insiders sourced in the report say the movie is "more than just an adaption, it’s the movie musical based on the Broadway musical, based on a movie that is based on the legend."

HOLY GRAIL is my favorite comedy, but I haven't got a chance to see SPAMALOT. I've heard some of the songs, but surely that can't compare to seeing the thing on a live stage. A movie version could be fun and seems different enough to stand apart from the movie. As long as there's a song about coconuts, I'll be happy.
