“There’s a new movie from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer” is second only to “I’m sorry, you have cancer” in the bad news department. The men responsible for gems like DATE MOVIE, MEET THE SPARTANS, DISASTER MOVIE and most recently THE STARVING GAMES (get it?!) continue to defy the laws of society and logic by getting funding for their insipid spoof “comedies”. They are Public Enemy #1 for every struggling artist who has ever tried in vain to raise money for their passion project.
In any event, the dynamic duo are back with BEST NIGHT EVER, which appears to be a send-up of movies like BRIDESMAIDS, THE HANGOVER, SPRING BREAKERS and PROJECT X. The thing is, those are comedies. Why are you spoofing comedies, Friedberg and Seltzer? Have you travelled so far into the darkness that you don’t even know what a spoof is anymore? Perhaps you never did…
Naturally, the trailer for the film offers zero laughs. The absolute weirdest thing about the marketing for BEST NIGHT EVER right now is that it’s being touted as “From the producers of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and INSIDIOUS.” Um, okay, that may be true (and shame on you, Jason Blum), but what in SAM HELL does that have to do with what we’re watching?! Oh I know, because you didn’t want to say “From the directors of EPIC MOVIE”, right?! Ugh, sorry, I’m getting myself all riled up here.
BEST NIGHT EVER opens on January 31st in limited release.
