Kevin Smith announces Clerks III will be his final film as writer/director

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Kevin Smith, as a director, has two halves to his career. Any of the films in which he has played Silent Bob I love. Everything is is incredibly hit or miss. I liked ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO and RED STATE was an interesting exercise, but nothing can compete with Jay and Silent Bob.

Kevin Smith recently announced that his movie HIT SOMEBODY was going to be a television mini-series instead of a theatrical release. He also announced the following on his Twitter feed: So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III

Smith has talked about retiring about as often as Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino, so this is not major news, but this does put a finite stamp on when his career will come to an end. He does say “writer/director” but I doubt he would shift to directing material purely by others. This seems to be the true end to the Kevin Smith filmography.

But, on the bright side, we will be getting another CLERKS movie. I loved CLERKS and CLERKS 2 is a fun follow-up, but felt closer to MALLRATS than CLERKS, in my opinion. It would be nice to have Smith come full circle with his career and end it where he began, at the QuikStop.

Here’s to hoping he can get Rosario Dawson to come back!
