What about Voltron? Aug. 18, 2008
Source: Variety
by: Mike Sampson

I was a Transformers nerd as a kid. I had no room for GoBots, Robotech or Voltron. I was monogamous with Optimus Prime so I'm not itching with excitement over the VOLTRON movie. But for those who love lion-based robots, the film was put into turnaround by Fox-based New Regency (JUMPER, MIRRORS), which would normally be bad news. But the good news is that Relativity Media (DEATH RACE, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) is in talks to pick up and finance the project though on a much smaller scale. Word is that they plan on slashing the budget by using the now-popular 300-style of filming (heavy green-screen). Justin Marks (HE-MAN) wrote the latest version of the draft that follows five survivors of an alien invasion who find and man lion-shaped robots to help fight off the aliens. I can just hear the pitch now: "It's TRANSFORMERS meets CLOVERFIELD meets INDEPENDENCE DAY!" What's your take? Can Voltron work on a smaller budget? Can Voltron work, period? Is a GoBots movie far off?

Extra Tidbit: My parents accidentally got me GoBots one Christmas and I was SO bummed.

WHY NOT?
Man, I loved this show as a kid and I hope they hire a decent director for the movie. Yes, its not as well known as transformers and the premise might be even a little more far-fetched but I don't think that hurts its ability to be adapted into a good film.

Example: Daredevil, in my mind is an infinitely more intriguing character than Hellboy and has a much larger fanbase. However look at how their movies turned out. Hellboy II is one of the most praised movies of the Summer (it currently holds an 88% at Rotten Tomatoes) and it begins with a pre-teen devil being told a bed time story illustrated by CGI puppets.

If you can make a decent movie with that sort of premise than why not Voltron? The series actually has a pretty deep plot and better character development than most of its contemporaries. If they get the right talent involved (Maybe Davide Slade, Louis Leterrier, or Alex Proyas) there's no reason why it couldn't work.

No Michael Bay? Then it can't possibly be worse than the humanitarian travesty that was Transformers.

I thought Voltron was a more interesting show than Transformers when I was a kid. Maybe a 6 on a scale to 10, as opposed to a 1. What they need to do, is make Silverhawks, Thundercats, or Bucky O'Hare into a movie. I'm flexible.

i loved Transformers, Robotech and Voltron, seeing as how Transformers was the American one out of the 3 and most recognizable, it was made as a movie first, and out of the other 2, Robotech would be a better movie by far. Voltron was great as a kid and as a cartoon, but i dont see it working as a film.

SouthernSolomon, other than throwing out the tights and trying to make the suits look all bulky, Power Rangers was the sh@t. "dont mess with the Ooze"

I never even knew anything about Voltron until your brief overview, and I gotta say, it really sounds stupid. I don't care what kind of budget it gets, it seems like an all-around bad idea.
