A new film in the Conan the Barbarian series is something fans have been wanting for years, but it’s also something they very well may never get. Though we may not see the muscular, minimally dressed hero swing his mighty sword on the big screen again that doesn’t mean the small screen is out of the cards, as it’s just been announced Conan will saddle up once again for a series on the way from Amazon.
Deadline got the goods that a drama series based on the Robert E. Howard CONAN series is coming to Amazon from Ryan Condal (COLONY, 2014's HERCULES), Miguel Sapochnik (GAME OF THRONES) and Warren Littlefield (FARGO and THE HANDMAID’S TALE). Condal will write and create the series and executive produce alongside Littlefield, while Sapochnik will direct.
The Conan the Barbarian comics remain the most famous iteration of the character, with the run starting in 1970 from Marvel, adapted from Howard’s original work. The comics also served as the basis for the 1982 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger (and its sequel, CONAN THE DESTROYER), as well as a 2011 version with Jason Momoa. Condal and Sapochnik are collaborating on the project due to their shared love of the books, with their goal being to have the series go back to the original literary roots Howard began with in 1932.
No word on how this development would affect any potential big screen adaptation, which is still being talked about. Schwarzenegger seems pretty confident the movie, going by either THE LEGEND OF CONAN or CONAN THE CONQUERER, will happen saying, "Conan the Conqueror, where I’m sitting on the throne for years and years – decades, and then all of the sudden, the time comes when they want to overthrow me. So that story WILL be told and that movie WILL be done." But that was two years ago, and it seems the project could be dead in the water.
