Get Out gets in at #1!
The horror of meeting a significant other's parents pulled in the crowds this weekend to put GET OUT on top at the box office with an estimated opening of $30.5 million!
Writer-director Jordan Peele (without usual comedic partner Keegan-Michael Key) explored a socially relevant nightmare scenario, and scored the second hit of 2017 for horror-makers Blumhouse after SPLIT (now their highest-grossing domestic and worldwide effort).
The new R-rated thriller with Daniel Kaluuya (SICARIO), Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener only cost a reported $4.5 million to make, and is the rare release to acheive a 100% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes (you can read the JoBlo review HERE).
Swooping down to second place was THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE with $19 million after spending two weekends on top. The not-so-Dark Knight has a domestic total of $133 million with a worldwide total of $226 million.
The Keanu Reeves hitman sequel JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO punched its way up a position into third place with $9 million on its third weekend in cinemas.
With $126 million worldwide so far (on a $40 million budget), Wick's bullet-riddled bone-snapping visit to Rome has shot past the $88 million global total of the first JOHN WICK in 2014.
Monster-fighting Matt Damon was in fourth place with $8.7 million for THE GREAT WALL, losing 52% from its North American opening last week. The historically spurious account has a ten-day domestic total of $34.4 million, but filmmaker Zhang Yimou's $150 million epic fantasy has roped in more than $300 million worldwide.
The R-rated erotic sequel FIFTY SHADES DARKER slipped to fifth with $7.7 million as it passed $100 million domestic (despite never hitting #1 on the chart). The $55 million Jamie Dornan/Dakota Johnson BDSM romance now has a worldwide total of $328 million.
The Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy FIST FIGHT got knocked down a spot to sixth place with $6.8 million, dropping 47% from last week's opening. The R-rated after-school altercation has a ten-day domestic total of $23.5 million.
Leading up to the Oscars ceremony tonight, multiple nominees HIDDEN FIGURES and LA LA LAND were still doing brisk business in seventh and eighth place respectively, while the Dev Patel contender LION also leapt back on the list in tenth. M. Night Shyamalan's thriller SPLIT (now a month and a half in theaters) kept them apart in ninth.
Outside the chart, A DOG'S PURPOSE scampered away with Gore Verbinski's horror movie A CURE FOR WELLNESS after just one week in the Top 10. The weekend's other new wide releases couldn't make their way onto the list — the animated ROCK DOG fetched $3.7 million and the Nicholas Hoult/Felicity Jones thriller COLLIDE made $1.5 million, both on 2000 screens. And RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER, which ended up with only $26.5 million in North America, just opened to $94 million in China for a worldwide total of $238 million.
Next weekend starts March in claw-fisted fashion as Hugh Jackman walks Wolverine into the sunset with LOGAN. Other options include the dramas BEFORE I FALL and THE SHACK, plus the Anna Kendrick comedy TABLE 19 in limited release.
