I think we were all a little surprised, but relieved, when the pseudo-retired John Williams was very open about scoring the latest Star Wars venture for J.J. Abrams. The man seems to only work with Steven Spielberg and passion projects these days, so one could feel a collective sigh of relief when we discovered that the man behind not just STAR WARS, but SUPERMAN, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and HARRY POTTER (among dozens of other classic films) would return to a galaxy far, far away. Of course, he also helped to create the musical landscape featured in the first two Jurassic Park films.
You can’t replace the mightey maestro, but you can hire a great composer in his stead, and that’s exactly what Universal has done. Michael Giacchino has been tearing up Pixar films like it’s nobody’s business, winning an Oscar for his exhuberant and oftentimes heartbreaking film score for UP. Ironically enough, Giacchino is a J.J. Abrams regular, and had I pegged anyone to score STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, it would have been him. I’m more than happy to see him take the musical reigns of this franchise though, as I’m sure he’ll not only treat the original source material with the respect it deserves, but also expand upon it.
I’m remaining cautiously optimistic for Colin Trevorrow‘s JURASSIC WORLD. Everyone in front of and behind the camera has me excited to revisit the park that left its mark in 1993. We have a little ways before the June 12, 2015 release date, so you’ll definitely see whatever updates we can get our hands on before then.
