Back when Disney purchased Lucasfilm and the announcement was made that STAR WARS would be getting a new lease on life we were all left wondering what that meant for the future of Indiana Jones. Unlike STAR WARS, Indiana Jones was tied up with Paramount who had released all four of the movies, most recently with INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. Well, things have certainly changed as Disney and Paramount have reached an agreement on the film future of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg‘s iconic hero.
According to Deadline, the two studios have reached a marketing and licensing agreement in regards to Dr. Jones.
The new deal gives Disney marketing and distribution rights to future films as well as retaining its LucasFilms ownership rights. Paramount, on the other hand, will continue to have distribution rights to the first four Indiana films. The studio will also receive a financial rewards on any future films that are produced and released by Disney.
We have all heard that Harrison Ford‘s rumored deal to return as Han Solo also included a sequel to INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. Ford is keen to do it and so is Spielberg, all that stands in the way is George Lucas writing it. There is always the chance that Lucas would hand this off to Kathleen Kennedy and the Disney executives to work out, but the language of this deal clearly means another Indiana Jones movie is on the way!
