Twenty-five years after the previous Swamp Thing television series went off the air, a new live action series featuring the DC Comics character is gearing up to go into production. James Wan is executive producing the new series through his company Atomic Monster, with UNDERWORLD's Len Wiseman set to direct the pilot episode. Now the project has taken another giant leap forward with the casting of the female lead.

Crystal Reed, best known for playing Allison Argent on MTV's Teen Wolf (which was inspired by the '80s movie of the same title) and Sofia Falcone on Fox's "Batman before Batman" series Gotham, has signed on to play Abby Arcane on Swamp Thing. The series will follow Abby as

she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

The character of Abby Arcane is described as being a

smart and caring CDC Doctor. Her strong sense of empathy puts her at the center of a horrific life-threatening epidemic in her hometown, where she faces emotional demons from her past… while a chance meeting with scientist Alec Holland takes her into a world of horror and the supernatural, and of the elemental creature known as Swamp Thing.

Ash vs. Evil Dead's Mark Verheiden and IT co-writer Gary Dauberman have written the pilot episode. Verheiden and Dauberman are also executive producing the series with Wan, Wiseman, and Michael Clear.

Swamp Thing will premiere on DC Entertainment's subscription VOD service DC Universe sometime in 2019.

I'm mostly familiar with the Swamp Thing character from the movies Wes Craven and Jim Wynorski made in the '80s. I'm sure this show will be much different, and I'm interested in checking it out down the line.
