Is Alfonso Cuaron checking into Shining prequel The Overlook Hotel?

Alfonso Cuaron is one of the hottest directors in Hollywood, thanks to his passion project GRAVITY blowing the roofs off theaters and triumphing big time at the Oscars (including two for Cuaron himself, for Editing and Directing). He’s recently been rumored to be involved with Warner Bros’ HARRY POTTER spinoff FANTASTIC BEASTS & WHERE TO FIND THEM, but now it looks like the WB is interested in locking him up for another of their hot properties: THE OVERLOOK HOTEL, the SHINING prequel penned by former “Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara.

Scoop comes from Schmoes Know, which claims Warner Bros. has offered the project to Cuaron, and now it’s up to him to take or pass on. Warners clearly likes being in the Cuaron business – GRAVITY grossed $716 million worldwide for the studio, while his HARRY POTTER installment grossed &796 million – so it makes sense that they’d want him to helm what must be a major priority.

This is strictly a rumor, so don’t reserve a room just yet. Every studio in town probably offers Cuaron a project a week, so even if this is true, it’s not exactly startling news. But it’s tough not to get excited at the possibilities, considering the Spanish helmer’s knack for stunning visuals and tense storytelling.

Let’s wait and see if this pans out.
