Earlier this month Jake did us all a solid by letting us know that HUGO star Asa Butterfield would be toplining the upcoming adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s classic sci-fi novel ENDER’S GAME. But who would be stepping up to star alongside Butterfield?

Well apparently Odd Lot Entertainment wanted Viggo Mortensen for the adult lead of Colonel Hyrum Graff, the Commander of Training for the International Fleet, an elite boys’ military academy. But it seems talks fell through. So who are they turning to now? According to Variety it’s none other than Harrison Ford! Why didn’t they go that direction in the first place??

Ford (right) is only one of a few veteran thesps the studio is looking at for the role. So obviously none of this is a done deal or anything but it’s nice to see what direction they’re going in.

Set in Earth’s future, ENDER’S GAME presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien race also known as the “Buggers”). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed.

Gavin Hood is directing ENDER’S GAME which already has a March 15, 2013 release date courtesy of Summit Entertainment. We’ll keep our eyes open for any other updates on ENDER’S GAME, like if Ford signs on, so be sure to check back soon for those.
