Amidst all the praise that PAN’S LABYRINTH has been getting, you know that director Guillermo del Toro has been itching to get back with Ron Perlman and get down to making the sequel to HELLBOY, which is what he intends to do mid-next year.
Fangoria reports that in a chat with del Toro, the director reveals that while casting will begin for HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY in January, “we are preparing to shoot in May or June”. The biggest battle del Toro says he’s facing is once again the budget, which may be the reason Sony dropped the film originally.
“We’re still fighting the budget battle, so it could still go on a while before we start. But the difference between the first one and the second film is that you get all of the beats that the first one had, but like any franchise you hope it will bring freshness to the characters. I hope that in a way, we will be reinventing what we did on the first one.”
